Here in the uk we have Japanese sika in Ireland, a small population in England and a large population in Scotland, they are hybridising with the native red deer that are closely related to elk, challenging to hunt but very tasty

@dominicjohnson8427, actually, sika deer (genus Ocellelaphus) are more closely related to fallow deer (genus Dama), chitals (genus Axis), and hog deer (genus Hyelaphus), than they are to common deer (genus Cervus), therefore, sika deer cannot hybridize with red deer.

@@indyreno2933 you are 100 % wrong my friend, by quoting their ancient names doesn’t mean you are an expert, I’ve hunted red/sika and hybridised animals on our shores, there is scientific studies that have been carried out to determine this FACT, to the point where an animal has been killed they can estimate the percentage of the genes within that deer, red deer have been hunted for centuries on our shores and so the spread of the sika deer is a real worry to the native red deer, studies have also been carried out to determine which group of reds are truly 100% pure as the sika slowly spread up north of Scotland, sika escaped from a deer park around 100 years ago so obviously nowadays the population is huge, hopefully this factual information educates you on the spread of sika, if you’re interested in hunting these animals the best places in the world are New Zealand, Scotland and Ireland due to the population growth, red deer CERVUS ELAPHUS can breed with sika deer CERVUS NIPPON ,
