This channel focuses on old school 4x4's, old school wheelin', and exploring the great outdoors. All you find here is simple adventures enjoyed and experienced by regular folks having some good old-fashioned fun.
We like rigs to be 40 years and older. As a result, tinkering, restoring and trail repairs are all part of the experience. Craig & Sarah have a slightly modified 1979 Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, and they try to use it for what it was intended for. However, they still care for it enough, so Craig can take the misses on evening cruises. You will also find Jamie's original 1948 CJ2A Willys join in on the adventure on a regular basis. In our opinion, if you don't overbuild your rig, then you won't have to travel as far to use it ;)
If you are a local to the PNW, have any old school 4x4, and want to join us on the trail for some old-school fun, don't be afraid to reach out!

Fun with Relics "Everywhere" // FJ40 & CJ2a at Elbe, WA
One of the best parts of owning a mostly stock 4x4 is that you find challenges around every corner (i.e., trips to Moab not required). Jamie and I spent several minutes trying to out climb each other on what amounts to little more than a mole hill, but felt like a mountain.

Let's determine what makes a CJ2a so much more photogenic than and FJ40. Is it looks, the operator, or is it simply the rigidity of the 80-year-old suspension compared to the flexibility of a 40-year-old suspension? And if so, is a rigid suspension really worse, or just different? The FJ's Suspension: Shackles: www.coolcruisers.com/shacleafspri.html Shocks: www.bilstein.com/us/en/product/bilste...

If youre looking at sticking to a AT tire, i love Mickey Thompson Baja Boss. If youre wanting something a hit more agressive but not a full MT you could look into a rugged terrain tire.
Old rigs are just flat out FUN!
You got that right!
hahah i guess. a car crashing is more fun to watch thern a car driving i spose. :)
Damn havnt seen desert dogs in years
Desert dogs?
Hello, greetings from Pontassieve, province of Florence, Italy. I have a Suzuki Jimmy 4x4 with a 1.3 litre M13A petrol engine, manufactured in 2001, all original, which I often use on dirt roads on rural farms and on dirt forest roads used by loggers to get wood from the forest. With forestry tractors, with skidders and forwarders, and with forestry trucks used to transport wood! And this is even though a 4x4 off-roader with original configuration behaves very well on this type of forest and rural dirt and gravel roads!
I wish the Jimny was available in the US. I also wish the 70 series Land Cruiser was available here.
My off road rig is a '47 cj2 with a dauntless v6 and 31 inch tires. I completely agree with you. Fun is always nearby! No long distance trips required.
Right on! I bet that V6 makes your rig pretty capable though. Seems like the only restriction my buddy has with his, is power. That said, he just added an overdrive, and that's been a world changer so far. Basically, he now has a gearing option between first and second - First low, First High, then Second Low, and so on...
Overdrive is a nice feature. Can't do that with my dana 20 but I do have terralow gears which takes the dana 20 to a 3.15:1 ratio. Combined with a 4 speed tranny and spartan lockers both ends it makes for a fun trail rig. Hope to run into you guys on the trails one of these days.
@@mikeleonard2510 - I hope so to. Where are you typical wheeling grounds?
I usually head over to the naches trail system over by cliffdell. Lots of dispersed camping and several fun trails. I'm in the tri cities so it's only a hundred or so miles - not bad for flat towing the willys.
Agree 100%! nothing wrong with a crazy capable rock crawler but a basic n simple 4wd is always gonna be fun! I’ve got a rav4 and going to have tons of fun with it! 🤘🇨🇦
Heck yeah! And in the RAV4, it will take a licking, but keep on ticking. Those are great little rigs!
The guy in the green FJ drives like he’s blind! 🤣
Without his glasses on, he kind of is 🧐
Bfg mud. 33/150. You trailer the rig looks like. I have used this on a 78 40 in southern Missouri all seasons with no complaints other than price
Thanks! I do trailer my rig, but I also use it for dates with my wife, and drive it on the highway to work on warm sunny days. The KM3's are high on my list to consider.
epic wheeling man, amazon chinesium muddders i put a set on my rig and did an adventure rally in baja with only 1 flat. 3000 miles.
Thanks for the info! I’ll have to check those out. Im assuming you didn’t see much mud in Baja tho 😂 Any experience with them in the wet stuff?
FJ40 - my love
You're right. It's not about kitting a vehicle for the apocalypse, it's about enjoying outdoors
Amen to that!
😂😅 well put!
Subscribed, I love this! For street cars, the saying goes- it's more fun to drive a "slow car" fast than it is to drive a "fast car" slow. This is like the off-road version of it. I'm building up my Subaru Forester for similar kind of fun. It's so gratifying to be the underdog and work your way through an obstacle. I hope to hit up Elbe later this year!
Thanks! And great saying 😂 I agree with the underdog reference - overcoming an obstacle with skill, ingenuity, stubbornness, etc provides a sense of accomplishment otherwise unachievable if a challenge had not existed. Good luck with your Subaru! I’d be interested in hearing about your plans for it.
I agree. I love watching the old jeeps especially the Willys go thru rough stuff. Cool video and what's really important is that u guys had a blast
Fun is the goal, and we are always successful 😂 That old Willys is quite the rig, and a blast to watch!
I agree. Finally getting to build a 73 K20 that I had in storage for roughly 20 years now that my sons are grown. Picked up forever ago trying to avoid California's Smog Laws. Going with a mild build. A 4" lift with 35's and Yukon locker in the rear and Yukon limited slip in the front. I watch these amazing cut ones with 40's on coil overs with supercharged LS conversions but I dont have 75k to build it or the neck and back to offroad at that level anyway.
Yep - just get it on the road (or off), and enjoy it for what it is! 👍 That said, one thing I have to upgrade on my rig tho are the tires. I made a mistake on the KO2’s. Mud terrains in my neck of the woods are a must. But, they aren’t getting any bigger. Bigger tires means more stress. More stress means you have to beef things up. It snowballs fast.
@@FJAdventurer I agree on the tires. All my previous trucks came with AT's and I always swapped for MT's as soon as the tread was even even remotely close to being gone. Very worth the little bit of extra road noise. I am trying Cooper STT Pro's for my first go around as they got decent reviews without the Big Brand name mark ups. If they don't do well I will consider other options next go around. Hopefully will have the truck done this year and have fingers crossed with the softer Offroad Design (Alcan) custom spring lift it will be comfortable enough for my back and neck to do a fair amount of lighter to medium offroading. Hopefully I made decent build decisions. Time will tell if all the changes were well thought out over stock or not. Lol
@@MrBillsfishin - I'll be interested in hearing about your experience with the Alcan Springs. When I had to replace my springs and ran with procomp. They turned out to be harsher than this 50-year-old back would like. I considered Alcans originally but was deterred some by the cost.
@@FJAdventurer I wasn't thrilled by the cost either but I figured if I didn't get the better ride offered in theory due to the thinner more flexible leaf design the entire truck was a waste given my significant neck and back issues. Hopefully a few months from now I will finally know. The shop has been over promising and under delivering somewhat so if it is done by the end of year I will be thrilled. Lol
@@FJAdventurer I think I paid around $800 per set of springs but that was almost 4 years ago now.
Mud tires are a must at Elbe no matter what you drive. 👍
You my friend are spitting facts! I have a couple more Elbe videos in the works that demonstrate how true this really is 😅
I'd emphasize the point you made about reliability being a key characteristic. Breaking parts and being stranded isn't fun.
Absolutely. I've found keeping (at least these two rigs) as stock as possible has contributed to that.
Bigger Newer is always better, tires do make an difference,as long as your having fun is worth more than $80,000 dollar rig, just have fun I agree with you
Fun is the goal, right? I guess what ever gets us there. For some, it’s the build, for others it’s the adventure, and so on.
That said, I actually do need to upgrade my tires. The all terrains are great everywhere but the mud, and , we have a lot of mud in WA state. My KO2’s can’t get the job done.
I agree with everything you have said! My dream is an old flatty that I can leave out in the rain and go off road where ever I can. Great video!
Heck yeah! I’m looking to add a rust bucket flatty to my collection as well. They are beautifully simple, and will dang near fit on a quad trail 😂
I apply this same philosophy to my RC crawlers! The top heavy, mostly stock, underpowered trucks are the ones that I find myself playing with the most. The joy and challenge of making an incapable vehicle climb, crawl or crash its way through seemingly simple terrain is more fun than hunting for an insane obstacle that can challenge a purpose built rig. I'd rather spend 15 minutes and 30 attempts trying to find a way to get over a small hill rather than 45 seconds easily slow crawling a "difficult" trail in an expensive purpose built rig. "The best off-roader is the one that gets the most smiles per gallon out on the trail" 😄👍🏻
Great comment, and thanks for sharing it!
Washington mud is unforgiving.
You got that right!
Red one just needs some better wheels 🛞
The goal is to keep them as original as possible, and enjoy them for what they are.
Dizzy bushings, had a similar problem on a 283
Turns out it was a defective “new” condenser. Apparently Chinese condensers are quite frequently trash. But also unfortunately, China is the only maker of condensers anymore. So, moral of the story is, when you need a condenser, buy 3 and hope 1 works.
the only way is to replace the seal and in my cases i asked the owners to have a bran new drive shaft i will send you a picture of it the cost was 280 us dollars for a perfect result
I replaced the seal, and it still leaked. So I siliconed it, and used a thicker gear oil. That has finally stopped it.
Cooper STT Pros.
Thanks for the recommendation! (especially since its a cheaper option than what I was considering) 😉
awesome display of what those little trucks can do
Thanks! It's hard to believe that decades of advancement since these relics were built hasn't done much more than jack up costs and over complicated funtion. 😂
Great video 😉 I have 235/85r16 falken wildpeak MT on bj40 and they work perfect in mud !!!
Thanks for the tip! New MT's are in my future, and I like hearing what actually works. Thats said, I'm stuck in the world of 15" wheels, so size options are much more limited. BUT, at least with 15" wheels, the tire height and width are explicit! 😂 I had to run to the interweb to diagnose what a 235/85 equates to, haha...
Maybe close to 31x10,50r15
Interestingly enough, per TireSize.com, 235/85/16 equates to 31.7/9.3/r16. So, you are getting a little extra bang for the buck on diameter than maybe you thought. Well done Falken! BFG's are generally a little shorter than advertised.
Yes I like this size 235/85r16 because they are still narrow but still keeping a good side wall, I think you can found 31x10,50r15 so more narrow than the first size I said but not a lot of brand are doing this size
Those little "tractors" have valiantly stood the test of time. The Cruisers? They ain't bad.
Truth.
Your tires didn't look aired down. That would have helped. Just my 2 cents haha.
I had them down to 25, but the ruts were deep in a lot of areas, so ground clearance was a premium. It was a balancing act.
@@FJAdventurer Gotcha. Totally fair. I usually run 18lbs. but it does lower your ground clearance.
I ran 17 lbs on a more recent trip, and they did work a little better, but still not great. Ultimately, the little Willys and it's ancient tire tech embarrassed me on back-to-back trips. But to be fair, KO2's are not supposed to be mud tires. I also ended up getting dirt stuck in one bead and ended up with a flat the next day.
Is that a screaming popcorn emoji?
A set of 35x10.50 KM3’s would have solved most of your problems, but a better rear locker and the addition of a front locker may have also solved most of your problems. However, all of the above would make you unstoppable. 😏
I like the recommendations! I’m guessing there are better mud tires out there, but km3’s probably handle well on the highway as well.
Looked like a lot of fun! I don’t know enough about tires to suggest a good set for mud but your assessment of the current tires you got seemed spot on, they did not want to let go of that mud, looked like you were runnin drag slicks most of the time lol great footage 😄👍🏻
Actual racing slicks may have been an improvement. It was a hilarious day.
@@FJAdventurer😂😂
Cj2a use goodyear xtra grip 750r16?
Nope - They are Super Traxion 6.50x16. They haven’t been great in the snow, but they were killing it in the mud.
The fJs tires are almost twice as wide as well
8” mt’s vs 10.5” at’s to be exact. But yeah, the FJ also has twice the power. But it only has limited slip in the rear. The CJ has front and rear lockers. Ultimately it all kind of evens out at the end of the day 😂
Which drone do you have?
Skydio 2+. It’s been excellent for autonomy tracking, but it’s horrible if you want to fly it by remote.
@@FJAdventurer I'll check it out! Thank you!
Unfortunately, it looks like Skydio may have discontinued their consumer line.
I also learned that UA-cam likes to autocorrect "Skydio" to "Skidoo" which is unfortunate as well.
@@FJAdventurer I found some used.
Met these guys out on the trails today those jeeps are pretty impressive after seeing them close up. Keep crushing trails fellas can’t wait to see more!
We met a couple guys on the trail, but I can recognize you by your UA-cam avatar? Were you the fella on the KLX?
That looks like a lot of fun! The distance that old Jeep had to pull you before you could get out of the snow ditch was crazy lol 😂👍🏻
That was even sped up to 150% because it dragged on so long 😂
Looks like a lot of fun. I Did a similar trip with my father in law a few weeks back. It's hard when the snow gets slushy like that, I ended up taking my tires down to 3 psi to get unstuck the final time. Does your friend with the 2a have (lock-Right) lockers front and rear? I wonder if that is what gives him trouble in the snow? It seems having the ability to unlock the axles helps to keep you a float a bit more at least in my experience. When I have lockers engaged the wheels have a tendency to dig instead of pull/push
Yep - Lock-rites front and rear. And I agree with your theory. In fact, he actually unlocks one of his hubs once in a while to help. But this was some nasty snow for sure.
5:07 - Weird, drone operation while driving a relic during blizzard like conditions seems simple enough to navigate. 🤪
You’d think so, right? 😅
Looking back, it seems like an extra bonus point should have been awarded for actually apexing that little hill climb. 😉
That’s a fair point! But it’s too late now, I guess… Victory was within my grasp, but then snatched away due to a simple tally error.
Smart way to do it. Hopefully you got all areas that mud collects in and rusts.
Unfortunately she had decades of cleaning neglect before I got the old girl. So the rust has already taken hold in all the common places. She’s part Swiss cheese at this point 😅
@@FJAdventurerWell just look at it this way, it carrying on it’s rusty tradition.
I have the same jeep but a diesal , BJ40 and I love it.
Oh yeah! I’d love to have a diesel, but in my area the only way that would happen is if I swapped one in. The BJ’s never made it to the states, and the ones that are here are unicorns!
Your ignition coil no good the resister inside the coil burnt you must replace the ignition coil with built in resistor or continuous burning condenser and later points burn faster .
The funny thing is the jeep has and external resistor as well as a coil with an internal resistor. Neither were bad, but definitely redundant. Your comment led to that discovery. So, the external was removed, and she still runs just fine. 👍
Forklift ownership is a life changer.
It’s getting harder and harder to remember what life was like without one.
What size wheels and tires are you running on your 40? I really like the look of the deep dish wheels.
Those are 15”x9” Chevy square body rally wheels with 33”x10.5” BFG KO2 tires. I bought the wheels off Craigslist for $25 (for 5), and had the centers bored out a little to fit over Toyota hubs. Then I used self tapping sheet metal screws to attach FJ40 hub caps to them to get a semi-OEM look. I bought the tires off Amazon 😂
@@FJAdventurer Very nice, the deep dish look with the original style hubcaps looks really cool.
