      Fully agree - its a great experience for sure. So are the earlier generations of Cayman (981 and 987). I've also had a 997.1 C2S, BMW 340, BMW M2, VW GTI, and ND Miata, and they all are their own brand of enthusiastic fun. At the top of the handling and performance in the mountains stands the 718 GTS 4.0. That said - I sometimes miss the tire squeal of the 911 as I struggled to keep up with the 981 CS ahead. Thanks for commenting and see you out there I hope!

    Love your videos! I live in Florida and drive up to NC, TN and VA every month from April through October just to hike and drive the mountain roads. I can take US 441 all the way from Lake City in northern FL to GSM NP. Waynesville, NC has become one of my favorite place to stay. It gives me easy access to the BRP, US 276, NC 215 and of course US 441 though the NP. I also like Sperryville, VA just outside of Shenandoah NP. VA 211 through the Thornton Gap is a fabulous drive. My trip in June was and my trip in July will be in a Cayman 6MT 4.0 GTS. It is by far the best handling car I’ve ever driven. That and its relatively smaller size make it a better car than the 911 on the narrow mountain roads. Those GA rumble strips drive me nuts. Better have both hands on the wheel when passing on two lane roads in GA!

      Thanks for the great comment. I love all the roads you mentioned. 211 is great! I drove it back before the car was all the way broken in - so the footage isn’t that good. Need to get back out there soon! Will need to check out Waynesville - appreciate the suggestion. So I have to ask - what is your favorite backroad?

    • @Yakman18
      @Yakman18 День тому

      @@trueview3127 I have to say, I’ve been loving NC 215 lately. Lots of very tight turns and elevation changes and it really keeps me on my toes. Plus there are some great hikes off that road. I also have a serious soft spot for the BRP and have driven the full length in both directions. In June I drove from Sperryville to Waynesville only using Skyline Drive and the BRP (except for the detour east if Boone). 450 miles in 10 hours. I try to start those Skyline and BRP drives a couple of hours before sunrise so I can get the road to myself. It’s quite the variety with sections of tight twisties and sections in southern VA with wonderful big sweepers. VA 647 heading east from Flint Hill is very fun scenic drive past a lot of horse farms. I’ll take that while traveling from Sperryville to Arlington to visit my daughter. Hmm, now that you have me thinking, I need to mention US 58 just north of VA’s southern border. The section from Independence to Damascus is absolutely insane! Just hope you don’t get stuck behind one of the many bike vans taking people to the tops of the bike trails. That said, the bike van drivers keep those rigs moving pretty well considering. As a side note, the section from Galax to Independence is four lanes with some big high speed sweepers. It’s a fun, fast entry coming into the more technical sections from the east. Finally, US 64 through the Nantahala and Pisgah National Forests is very good, though it can get a bit trafficy around Highlands and Cashiers.

    Fast flowing roads don’t get much better than this! I love the long sweeping turns where you can just play with the car’s balance with the throttle all day long. Excellent video as always. Something that has come into my mind recently is how much different a true sports car differentiates itself with something like a car that's a bit more practical or on the daily driver side. Think WRX STI or Golf GTI. My brother recently picked up an NA generation '91 Miata and the difference in driving experience is completely different to my MK7.5 GTI Autobahn. Both are a blast to drive but you defintley can do more with less in the true dedicated sports car.

    • @trueview3127

      I couldn’t agree more. The comparison between the cars is tough to really get in a video- but we are trying to show the same road with the STi and the 981 / 718 so the viewer can see back to back how different the experiences are. This UA-cam journey has taught me the value of the experience over the speed to 60 or whatever other stat. I don’t think you could say the STi driver didn’t have an exciting experience on that road. I bet some might think that about the Porsches - but then again the high Gs are tough to get across on the vids. Once again - appreciate it!

    As good as the motor in the STI is, the lack of refinement is noticeable. I can tell that he has to rev the piss out of for speed, and like many turbos, it runs out of breath above 5500. Next time, make it a fair fight. 718S or GTS 2.5 v WRX STI. The Porsche will be a more flexible drivetrain. The sad part is that Subaru is no longer interested in these cars and their owners have to contend with Jatco transmissions and head gasket issues.

    • @trueview3127
      @trueview3127 9 днів тому

      I just drove them the 718 GTS 4.0 and 981S back to back. The torque is about 20 percent more on the 718 but in the mountains, it’s the tire grip and experience that matter most - at least to me. So - both cars are fantastic tools for what they do and that is to convert miles to smiles.

      Why should the GTS have shorter gearing? Porsche engineers with many years of experience and craftsmanship have made the gearing in their own wisdom they are one of the best sports car manufacturers out there today. The gearing is perfect for the Cayman.

      @@trueview3127 I drove them back to back on nearby series of roads I used to demo the cars to my friends just a few days ago. The cayman s is manual and the turbo s is obviously loaded with every piece of tech known to man at the time. I'm going to cheat on my answer. Driving the Turbo S feels like piloting a million dollar space ship and its Burmester sound system is superior to the point I can totally zen out to my music as I flow through the curves which is a HUGE deal to me. The cayman lets me feel way more of the road through the steering wheel and is much more work to carve the right line so it often feels more rewarding when you get it right. It depends on what mood I'm in.... You can also definitely tell the Cayman weighs 600 lbs less when doing weight transfer. I also have a DSC PASM sports controller on the Cayman among many other mods. They are so incredibly different to drive it is hard to really compare the experiences. After I put an exhaust on the Turbo to liven it up a bit my answer my change.
