Hi there! My name is Ben, I’m a film director and composer. Over the last few years I’ve been studying the scores of some of the greatest composers around and have decided to share some of my observations on the internet in video form.

Another great reduction! Thank you very much
Correction: the chord on the fourth beat of m. 75 should be G/B, not G5.
Would you be able to do “Presenting the Hook” at some point? I love the building of tension and especially that violin solo.
I’ll see what I can do.
@BenSmithFilm yes!! Been waiting for Presenting The Hook for a while now
Incredible 🫡🎉❤️🔥❤️🔥
❤❤❤❤❤
Nicely done. Such a great cue.
What's the bassoon cue after the video ends?
@@alexstvincentwelch it’s from the concert version of this cue that Hal Leonard never published for some reason.
@BenSmithFilm legend thanks so much for replying!!
So glad you reviewed a segment with this absolute GEM of a theme.
JW is… JW nobody ever did it better with all due respect. His music has such immediate recognizable qualities yet being quite complex for something like movie music. Another great video. Thank you
3:00 Goosebumps every time! I still think the first two HP movies are among Williams' best works.
I have chills, love your videos
JW puts so many composers to shame with his skill in creating texture. aMAAAAAAAZing work, Ben!!!
Nice work! Completely understand how hard/time-consuming/frustrating it can be to reverse engineer action cues like this. I've wanted to see this cue done for quite a while. I see the "Flying Car Theme" and "Panic Motif" as polar opposites of each other. I think one of the most effective aspects here is how much Williams uses each theme - towards the beginning the "Flying Car Theme" dominates as we're enjoying the freedom and the fun ride, but eventually the "Panic Motif", as well as those plonking chords at bar 69, begin to dominate the soundscape. I think this cue is also a great example of how to integrate old material in a sequel, though there are certainly parts of this film's score that don't do that. One thing I will comment on is that while yes, it's certainly likely that a bunch of this scene was cut out due to runtime, you tend to see often with more CGI-heavy sequences like this that a lot of Williams' music is cut out because the scene changes a lot from the early version he would have written this music to. Anyway, amazing stuff. If you're looking for more pain.. I'd love to see someone deconstruct "Cornish Pixies", or the Quidditch cues from either of the first two films, or anything from this film really! It's been covered so little. I might take a look at "Dueling the Basilisk" one day if I get around to it, though of course you should feel welcome to do it if you want! Side note: are you on discord?
Great point about certain melodic content being more saturated at different points throughout the cue. The original Quidditch music has been a work in progress for me since 2022, I'm fairly far long on the first two cues, but the thought of Slytherin Scores has made me consider my life choices. I've looked at both Cornish Pixies and Duelling the Basilisk (or "Dragon" as Williams calls it for some reason), but not started anything so we'll see. And yes I am on Discord, it's my gamer tag - I'll send you a friend request, I think we're in one or two of the same servers.
@@BenSmithFilm Dueling the Dragon is up there with ‘To Bangkok Palace’ from Temple of Doom in terms of confusing cue titles. The original quidditch music would make for a great video - Slytherin Scores is just Ludlow motif galore. For me, often the hardest part is starting it, then it gets easier from there.
your account is so incredible i cannot thank you enough for your vids
Incredible writing from JW, and terrific work from you! 👏
This job is just a-ma-zing!
Is it possible to access the analysis on paper?
I plan to make the PDFs available very soon. In the meantime you could just screen grab the stills from the video.
What do you use when transcribing? I can't find the option for trill(1/2) when I look for it on MuseScore.
I use MuseScore 3 specifically because it has the most flexibility for formatting. I believe MuseScore 4 does have more trill symbol options than MS3. I just add a fraction symbol next to it as playback isn’t important for me.
Hi! Do you also take requests from viewers? If so, I have request for the next video. Can you do "Bad Dates" score reduction and analysis from Raiders of the Lost Ark? :)
@@bartolomeomusic I’ll add it to my list.
@@BenSmithFilm Thanks! "Bad Dates" or "Indy Follows the Ark". Any of these. These are short motifs :)
I have to ask. How do you transcribe the notes and rhythms so accurately? Are you reading an actual or do you do all of this by ear? I, myself, have attempted to transcribe the scores from these movies by ear and you are definitely catching subtleties that I had never noticed before.
Usually I reduce from the score, if I ever don’t (either a whole cue or if parts of the music deviate from the score) I’ll make a note of that in my annotations.
@@BenSmithFilm Fascinating - so does that mean you have access to an actual score? The ones I have access to are published in the John Williams Signature Edition (Hal Leonard Publications) and do not include all tracks - so pieces such as The Flying Car are not in the score I have and I have to transcribe by ear.
@@hornguy04 I wonder the same thing. I'm sure it's a closely guarded secret, but how do you find all these scores?
@@ethanhayward9624Maybe he broke into John’s house
I wonder how Rowling herself thought of this song, considering the lyrics came from MacBeth.
1:41 is insanely gorgeous!
masterclass on harmonic relativity
1:03 that harpsichord build and the toads croaking afterwards is just so good - how amazing it would've been to have John Williams compose all 8 films! Also a nice insight to see how accurate Warwick's conducting was, always wondered
You are a genius!!! Where do you get these scores??? Magnificent! I mean, I know you do the reductions yourself, but are these the actual notations in the full scores of the movies whose music you show us?? You’re amazing!!
Thanks for doing this request for me!
Correction: At bar 79 the yellow and red coloured highlights should not be present on the melody stave, as the Trombones, Violins and Violas move onto different staves.
Amazing. Thank you Ben
I believe this is the London Oratory School Schola performing on this recording. They also sang for the Phantom of the Opera film adaptation as well as for Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Will never get enough of this score. If you have the music, I would LOVE to see the "Whomping Willow" cue from this score (after Ron is abducted)
These videos where you are showing each element separately are absolutely awesome. Please make more with JW music✨🙏👌🏻😊
This is incredible content
:D
I remember when this score first came out, I was initially really disappointed that it wasn't John Williams. But I've come to really enjoy it! (possibly MORE than Chamber of Secrets?) Gotta do the First Task score! THE HORNS 😍
Bravo, I love your work! Do you compose?
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I do compose, mainly for corporate or promotional videos and low-key concert music. I haven’t scored a film since 2021.
Nice! Would love to see more from this score from you :))
finally someone else who appreciates the GOF score! Fantastic reduction, a lot of great insight into Doyle's writing that you don't see much else (as Williams tends to take the spotlight :)
So true. My favorite score of these films is the one from The Half-blood Prince by Nicholas Hooper. But it always gets overshadowed, not only by William's but also by Desplat's scores.
Love these! Thanks for making them
I see Hedwig's Theme not as representing the owl itself, but as what Hedwig represents, especially from the first film. A connection to the magical world, new opportunities, new fears. Almost an entr'acte for the audience, to ground us.
I'd had the same thought, and I like that idea a lot as it also tallies with how Hedwig works as a device in the books. The only problem is that Williams uses it for a lot more than those things Hedwig herself represents, it feels like it's just used as the Main Theme (which is totally fine), I just like to point out where it is used specifically to represent Hedwig as that isn't always intrinsic to the presence of her theme.
Easily ranks third in my HP scores ranking. It just works so incredibly well, and meshes with the first 3 greatly. Especially the hymn.
I love it and it's an undeniablly extraordinary soundtrack. However, for me it's close to the bottom. I'd probably rank them as: TPOA, THBP, TCOS, TPS, TDH2, TOTP, TDH1 and TGOF. But all sublime and I love them all.
Can you make one for “Voldemort” of the same series if possible?
Absolutely
Any chance you could be doing Journey to the cave from HP6?
I'll put it on my list :)
You are the best! Thank you for your analysis
How does one manage to combine 5/8 and 7/8 and end up with that bland theme?
So good
What's the name of the piece of music that plays on the subscribe page at the end of the video? It's so beautiful and I'd love to hear the whole thing. As always, I really enjoy your analyses, keep up the good work!
@@ElijahHemingway It’s the end of Excerpts from Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Hey Ben, I love your content and am wondering if you take requests. If so, I'd love to see "Professor Umbridge" from Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix!
@@pixelbrady I’m sure I can do that at some point.
The most underrated HP Movie.
Love seeing more of the PoA score, it's easily one of my favorites! If you do the Whomping Willow fight one day (first half of the snowball fight track), you'll be my favorite forever 😂
I wonder if the use of the wooden reed of the oboe is supposed to correlate with the wood of the Whomping Willow - the association between the woodwind and nature is something I've seen before but I've never really considered it in Williams' work.
@@patricksuiter It’s certainly possible, but I don’t remember that device being used in any other scenes with the willow. I think that the crucial point in this cue is just to cut through the somnambulant music of before. The oboe has that almost piercing quality, but as a solo still has gentleness, therefore ideal for that purpose.
@@BenSmithFilm fair enough. I think the oboe is a lonely voice that works well to represent Harry too - Williams uses it for that purpose in A.I. for David and in Angela’s Ashes for Frank and his mother. I do remember the oboe being used at the end of ‘Saving Buckbeak’ - the whomping willow is in shot but not in focus, so the correlation isn’t too strong there either.
@@patricksuiter Williams definitely does do that in Harry Potter too. At the end of year feast in the first film, Williams moves from the Celeste for Hermione to the Oboe for Ron and finally strings for Harry.
