A Day in Belgrade Old Town, Serbia 🇷🇸
The day began with a stroll down Knez Mihailova Street, the city’s main pedestrian thoroughfare, where elegant 19th-century buildings lined the street. The architecture was a fascinating mix of neoclassical facades, ornate details, and charming cafes spilling out onto the sidewalks. The street buzzed with a cosmopolitan energy, as locals and tourists alike meandered through shops, enjoyed coffee, or simply people-watched.
Inday’s curiosity led her to the Kalemegdan Fortress, a sprawling historical complex perched on a hill overlooking the confluence of the Sava and Danube Rivers. As she climbed the stone pathways leading up to the fortress, the panoramic views of the city and the rivers were breathtaking. The fortress itself, with its imposing walls and ancient ramparts, offered a glimpse into Belgrade’s military past. She wandered through its various sections, including the old military barracks and the Belgrade Zoo, and admired the historical monuments scattered throughout the grounds.
In the heart of the old town, Inday discovered the charming neighborhood of Skadarlija, often compared to Montmartre in Paris. This bohemian district was alive with vibrant energy, its narrow streets lined with traditional restaurants, known as “kafanas,” offering the sounds of live music and the aroma of Serbian cuisine. Inday enjoyed a leisurely lunch at one of these historic eateries, savoring traditional dishes like sarma (cabbage rolls) and ćevapi (grilled minced meat), while soaking in the lively atmosphere and the warm hospitality of the locals.
As the afternoon wore on, she visited the Church of Saint Sava, one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. Its grand, white marble exterior and massive dome were awe-inspiring, and the interior, with its intricate mosaics and serene ambiance, provided a peaceful retreat from the bustling streets. The church’s scale and architectural beauty left a lasting impression on Inday.
No visit to Belgrade’s old town would be complete without exploring the bohemian neighborhood of Vračar, where the local vibe was both relaxed and eclectic. Here, Inday meandered through small boutiques, art galleries, and trendy cafes, finding that each corner of the district seemed to offer something unique.
As the sun set over the city, the old town took on a magical quality. The streetlights cast a warm glow over the cobblestones, and the air was filled with the sounds of music and laughter from the various cafes and bars. Inday took a moment to relax in one of the lively squares, reflecting on the day’s discoveries.
Belgrade’s old town had woven a captivating tapestry of experiences for Inday-ancient history juxtaposed with vibrant modern life, grand architecture, and the lively pulse of a city that never seemed to sleep. As she departed, she felt a deep appreciation for the layers of history and culture that defined this remarkable corner of Serbia, knowing that her visit to Belgrade’s old town had given her a rich and memorable glimpse into the city’s soul.

Inday's summer visit to Pyramiden, the abandoned Soviet town in Svalbard, unfolded under less-than-ideal weather conditions. The Arctic summer, typically characterized by its perpetual daylight, was marked by a stubborn overcast sky and a persistent chill that seemed to seep through every layer of her clothing. The usual brilliance of the midnight sun was obscured by thick, gray clouds, giving ...

Hi, Ivar! ❤ Thanks for pointing that out! You're absolutely right, this footage is from the city center. Unfortunately, I lost some of the other videos from my phone when I tried saving them to my computer, including the ones I took at Oslo Ladegård and Kunsthall in Bjørvika. I was gutted to also lose the footage I had from Vigeland Park-it had been such an interesting park. I really enjoyed my stay overall and hope to see more of Oslo when I return next summer. ❤❤

@@inday.strolls Sorry for your footage loss. You are of course more than welcome next year. My inside tip is to explore the narrow streets with the old wooden houses in Kampen and Vålerenga. (My neighbourhood.) The sculpture park in the forest at Ekeberg is a personal favorite. Go hiking along the Alna river and have a beer, coffee or a sauna at Kruttverket. And of course, you must see the islands. They can easily be reached by ferry from the harbour near Aker brygge. Affordable and accessible. Hovedøya and Gressholmen are both amazing for a picnic and maybe a swim.
