Brilliant program and brilliant actors.

I'm surprised that this series didn't receive high ratings. I personally enjoyed the series, partially because I have been looking into the Irish Revolutionary period. The first season I considered pretty good: the various fictional characters showing different 'types' of Irish people at the time, the intertwining of real life characters & the events, & decent production quality. (It was quite peculiar to see Irish people being patriotic British subjects and singing 'God Save the King'). The second season was a bit lackluster and didn't really show the War of Independence as it could compared to the first season with the Easter Rising.

Yes , it all became suspicious after the Donnybrook prime land deal was transacted , management approached Govern`mt for a running expenses bail out ,, you couldn`t make it up . HAHA.

I'm re-reading Kee's "Ireland: A History" and learned nothing new from the first episode, some facts (not even facts really, but inclusion of important personages) seem right but otherwise there was too much unnecessary drama, fictional women spying, or getting pregnant, etc. Then I learned through my reading that it wasn't until nineteen SEVENTEEN (not 16) that Britain considered conscription for the Irish, whereas a scene early on featured one of the female leads agitating against it in 1916. I won't be bothering with the rest of the series.

The English version of the bluray box set is now 600 USD on Amazon. Not sure how that's possible, but the French set is still available for a reasonable price.

It might have some flaws but honestly it's nice to see a show that highlights the brutality, savagery, greed, and sheer embarrassment that is British history. Too many shows about the time leading up to WW1 and 2 whitewash or try to make Britian look heroic. Britain only did anything for power even at the cost of all that is right and honorable. And they never apologized for their disgusting behavior to so many countries that they stole from. I think the future I can see is that Ireland and Scotland gain their independence.

Is X-files really available as remastered 16:9 HD picture quality? Interesting! I got the first three seasons today and they are DVDs in classic 4:3 PAL-VHS-quality :D ............... but it`s just a retro collector`s fan thing for the shelf and they were cheap (about two bucks per season) and in good pre owned condition so I bought it. These huge bluray collector versions with all eleven seasons always cost one hell of a price, most of the time 150 or even 200€ and I am not willing to pay this insane price because only the first five seasons are really interesting and true monster of the week episodes with Moulder and Scully ;)

What this Indian tribe did was commendable but the absurd way it is being treated now is just for political purposes. The title of this virtue signalling video is particularly stupid. In today’s money their contribution is worth $5,000. Does anyone believe that saved anyone’s life? Plus the donation was made by missionaries, traders, Indian agents and the Indians themselves so their contribution was less than $5,000.

But when I see a member of our so called leader trying to make a name for himself .I donated the bits done the same too us even when there was food stores full in Ireland so don't ever call it a blood death again .we suffered for years before that .if you think that a 175 dollars fed four million Irish your name must be moses the English drove us out of our own country but you seem to have forgotten

Very interesting. RTÉ obviously has some problems. I'm in the UK, so I'm afraid I'm not that familiar with RTÉ as a broadcaster, but it's clear they pay some of their presenters far too much, given the size of the budget they can operate within. There are several areas they could address. When it comes to drama, drama is unfortunately insanely expensive to make. It would make sense for RTÉ to seek co-production deals with major UK broadcasters. The BBC and Channel 4 would seem the obvious choices. Irish and British history are obviously closely intertwined, and there's plenty there to drive any number of historical dramas or political thrillers. Getting the tone right would be crucial, obviously. I can imagine that could be extremely difficult with the current crop of right-wing imbeciles who currently sit in Govt here. But, in many ways, that's all the more reason to do it. Particularly as much of Britain's darker involvement in Ireland is relatively unknown here. But, past programmes have shown that British audiences are willing to watch quality drama that deals with these subjects. RTÉ desperately needs new blood, both on and behind the cameras. Everything I've seen of programmes like The Late Late show are embarrassingly twee and outdated. Programmes like that need to be retired, with new faces filling those slots. Again, co-production deals with the BBC and Channel 4 could open up all sorts of avenues for RTÉ when it comes to comedy - particularly sitcoms. Derry Girls, Black Books and Father Ted were massive hits over here, and have sold relatively well overseas, and new comedy coproductions should surely be explored. But there's nothing like home-grown comedy, that speaks to your audience. I absolutely agree that RTÉ should be chasing Foil Arms and Hogg to develop sketch shows or sitcoms, as well as other up-and-coming comedians. Ireland has produced some of the funniest people in comedy, and RTÉ should be right at the heart of that. I think that in many ways, a major problem for RTÉ has been a lack of any real sort of competition. Competition (particularly n broadcasting) is hugely important, and RTÉ has sort of muddled along without one, until relatively recently. This helps breed complacency, without even realising it. One thing I will say though, is that I would hate to see RTÉ fail and close down. European broadcasting is now facing a massive challenge in the face of cheap streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix, and English-speaking countries face a particular problem, in that although 99.9% of shows on those services aren't intended for anything but an American audience, countries like the UK and Ireland both have to face the fact that their audience is largely English speaking, and we're familiar enough with US culture that their shows will find an audience here. In these times, a national broadcaster making shows for it's native audience is more important than ever. After all, without a voice of it's own, speaking to the it's own people, than a country loses a major part of it's identity. To that end, I would actually support a licence fee increase, but I'd want to see major improvements in the content and operation of RTÉ. Or, Ireland could move to a model similar to Norway, where NRK was facing a similar problem. Younger people were opting out of buying a licence fee for NRK, and watching US-based streaming services instead. This led to a severe drop in income for NRK, which depended upon a licence fee. To that end, NRK and the Norwegian govt upended the way NRK was paid for. Rather than have a licence fee which was only required when you actually watched live TV, Norway switched to a blanket internet tax. If you were consuming meda via TV that was streamed over the internet, you were required to pay a mandatory tax, which was ploughed back into NRK - even if you didn't actually watch NRK on those streaming services. This has transformed NRK's income, and allowed them to survive in a very competitive industry, and I can't help thinking this would be a better model for RTÉ, going forward.

I am deeply moved. I cried reading and studying about the Irish. I have chosen to do a paper on the Irish then I seen their generosity and it confirmed for me that I chose wisely.

This is beautiful and generous, but as an American, it makes me even more ashamed of our Federal Government for neglecting to care for indigenous people so despicably while giving billions to big corporations.

I know your heart's in the right place, but....For a start, it wasn't a famine. Millions of tons of other food, beef, lamb, pork, wheat, barley, eggs and more, were being produced in Ireland, but none of it was given to the starving people. It was all exported to England, under military guard. It was actually genocide. Also, the Irish have not just suddenly remembered about the tribe. The tribe are invited to Dublin every year, to be honoured. Young members of the tribe can come to Ireland for free university education. In 2005, Ireland sent money to the tribe, to help them recover from Hurricane Katrina. After they recovered, there was money left over. So, the tribe sent it back to Ireland, to fund Irish Ecology.. Neither the Irish nor the Choctaws ever thought of the donation as something that was required to be paid back. No debt was involved. Both just saw it as an act of true humanity that produced an everlasting loyalty to each other.

My dad grew up in Limerick, Ireland so my family was in Ireland at the time of the famine so forever grateful and forever on the side of all native Americans. Ireland was probably Englands first colony and then that cancer spread across the Atlantic and around the world. I will always defend native Americans against all enemies corporate and government.
