Two days camping in central Oregon #camping #pnw
I spent a couple days camping and exploring in central Oregon. First night was pretty windy and mostly a travel day so it was basically get to camp, get set up eat and go to sleep. Due to the wind I opted to not have a fire outside or in the tent. I used my Olympian Wave 3 for a little bit of heat and it was good enough since it wasn’t too cold out and the wind blew most of the condensation out too.
Second day I explored some of the area around some old volcanic cones and a cave before finding a campsite in the forest. It was lightly snowing and the wind had died down so I had a fire outside and in the tent.

Fall camping by a lake #camping #pnw #pnwadventures

I was headed for a campsite with a great view but after getting stuck in snow and struggling up the road I opted for a lakeside campsite. This is a spot I camped at last year in the winter that video is linked below. It was just a mellow campout and enjoying the mountains. I forgot to show my sleep set up but it was just my usual set up, foam pad, air mattress and quilt. Last winter camp: ua-ca...
Fall camping in the rain

My original plan was to camp in snow but it was too warm and the snow I found was very slushy so I opted for a lower elevation rainy camp. I had intended on sleeping in a tent but I decided to just stay under the canopy for the night. I stay pretty dry under there considering how much it rained. Having some tarps to add to the top and a couple of sides really helped. Also nice that I found some...

There was snow in the mountains so I set off on a hike. I was planning on doing Maple Loop Pass but there was more snow than I anticipated so I opted to just hike to Lake Ann. It was during a winter storm warning so I feel doing the shorter hike was a safer decision. I was the only car in the parking lot when I arrived and left and had the whole trail to myself. I’ve read that this hike is fair...

First time using this hot tent set up. Also the first time I’ve used this tent, wood stove, cot and quilt. It wasn’t too cold out but I thought this would be a good day to give this set up a test run. I was hoping for more snow but guess that will have to wait till next time. I tried to keep this set up fairly simple but it’s kinda bulky. It sure is nice having a tent that I can stand up in tho...

I hiked up to the fire lookout at Kelly Butte and camped with a great view of Mt Rainier and even got the comet on camera. I couldn’t see it with the naked eye but it showed up pretty good in the pictures. I’ve done this hike a few times before, it’s only about 3.5 miles (5.6km) to the top and the views are stunning if there are no clouds. After the hike I drove to a nearby spot and set up camp...

I had never backpacked to snow before so thought I’d give it a shot this year. I headed out to Lila Lake in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The trail starts off at the Rachel Lake trailhead and is only about a mile past Rachel Lake. The hike started with sun which turned to rain and then to snow as I climbed in elevation. I realized I had forgotten to bring gloves and an extra pair of socks which ...

For the beginning of October I decided to go on a short overnight trip. This is a hike that I’ve never done before but looked like it would have some great views and it definitely did not disappoint. It’s only about 3ish miles (5km) to the lake and then maybe another 1/2 mile (800m) to where I camped on the ridge. There were quite a few day hikers and a few other backpackers out there enjoying ...
New wood stove and hot tent setup for winter

I’d been thinking about a larger hot tent for a couple of years and finally pulled the trigger on one. I had originally thought about using an ice fishing shelter but decided I’d go with a more traditional option. I went with a Gazelle T4 overland for the tent and a Winnerwell Woodlander Large for the stove. Other than cutting the screen out of one window the tent is still ready for year round ...

Finding trees, rocks, snow and a bear - a day scouting in the woods.
That was quite an adventure traveling down here to Oregon Scott! You had a great setup for getting you through those cold nights out on the trail. 👍 Frontier looks like it’s fitting your needs well. I’ve overhauled our stable of vehicles too. Traded in our 2020 Cherokee TH for a 2024 Mazda CX5. Then traded in our 09 Beatle for some dough to buy our 06 4Runner for our new wheeler project.
@@ElectricDanielBoone Thanks. So far the frontier is doing pretty good. Definitely doing better on the mpg (averaging in the low 20s and the ford was in the mid teens). Glad I had the 350i for those trees, with the dewalt it would have taken quite a bit longer. I’m surprised to hear the Cherokee is gone, it was a very capable rig, be nice to see how you like the Mazda and 4Runner in comparison.
@ The “new” Cherokees have some serious reliability issues. Transmission went out on our 2017 TH before we got the 2020. 2020’s warranty was almost up, so I was getting nervous it’d go south too! I really liked our Cherokees, but needed a more reliable car for the wife and that’s where the Mazda comes in. No Cherokee, so no woods rig anymore and that’s where the 4Runner comes in. Pre 4Runner (only a month) I did take the Mazda up in the snowy woods a few times and it actually did amazingly well! Wife doesn’t appreciate me “wheeling” her nice new car though. 🤣
@ unfortunate about the reliability issues, new stuff is getting too complicated. Sometimes i think about getting an older truck but I hate to deal with the poor gas mileage. The wives always seem to get a little nervous when the new vehicle heads into the hills 🤣.
A nice video by a prepared and competent operator. I just love Central Oregon. I lived in Madras for several years.
@@highdesertforester Thanks. It took several lessons of being unprepared for me to learn the right balance of stuff to bring. It’s a beautiful area that I always enjoy exploring when I can get time to go there.
another excellent adventure ! Nice caves that you found, the second one, the biggest one is quite spectacular.
@@positiveattitudebymichusa Thanks! If I see a cave I must go adventuring in it. Next time I’ll have to bring my brighter headlamp and go all the way to the end.
In my home area! Let's go camping buddy!! I have some sweet spots!
@@PNWXMATT I keep meaning to explore that area more in the warmer months but somehow just make there in the cold.
Nice to see you went well prepared for the wind, you sure could see miles in that burn, quite the cave and views, nice to see the deer , that spot where they were was so beautiful, good job clearing road, interesting share👍
@@NatureInspiredSnipsnSnaps Thanks, I try to be prepared for what surprises may come. The deer were awesome to see I think saw at least 20 in that area.
Cool caves Scott. Noted the Where’s Wiseman sticker on your water bottle! Lots of fallen trees across roads out there!!
@@goldfinger180024 it’s a great area to explore, definitely need to go back again and again. The Wiseman’s have some great videos especially their goofy Halloween ones.
Nice area, very beautiful! I really liked the mini splatter cone. I gotta get back down there next spring or summer. Those trees on the way out is what always worries me in the winter, getting out after camping. I would have had to chop off the branches and drive over the logs if they weren't too big. Nice filming in the cave, it looked huge!
@@dandog7653 Thanks, I usually never run across trees on the way out and here there were two on the same day🤷♂️. That cave is huge, I had originally planned on fully exploring it but forgot my really bright headlamp and was wanting to get to a campsite while I still had daylight so next year I’ll plan on revisiting it. That mini splatter cone is something I wish I had in the back yard, it would make an awesome fire pit.
Fun camping adventures and off-roaming in the snow! It’s great that you have the equipment to get yourself unstuck if needed!! Your tent looks great- pretty little lake. 👌❄️❄️💙💙
@@JenniferLupine Thanks. Yes this is a really nice spot to relax by the lake and enjoy the PNW beauty. Funny after watching your latest India trip video I was watching Hiker T and there you are again 🤣. That looked like a great fall hike.
@ Lol- it sure was, thanks! I got back home in October- trying to finish up all the trip videos, but had to get in a hike too! Thanks! 😄
Excelent filming in that cave
Thanks, it was fun to explore, I’ll have to go back in summer and do the whole thing when I plan my trip a bit better and bring my better headlamp.
Pretty ballsey sleeping in the trees during a record low. Glad you made it. Caves are cool
True, but those trees are more flexible than say alders that like to snap in the cold when it’s windy. The first night I watched them for a while before setting up so that if a limb did break off the wind was blowing away from my tent. The second night I wasn’t too concerned since the wind wasn’t as bad.
Scott no place in the world like Central Oregon I grew up in a high mountain desert around Vale Oregon and I sure miss it you have a great place to camp add Explorer thank you for posting your video Jake McClellan the Oregon boy😊
Yes it is a stunning area. I had family in Grants Pass and sometimes on visits in the 80s and 90s we’d take the long way home and see some sights or do a little camping in the eastern parts. Oregon has always felt like a second home to me.
Great video & area to camp in. 👍
Thanks. It’s a beautiful area that I always want to explore in the summer but somehow only get there in the colder months.
@scottalpine Lol. But it's nice no one's out there. 😁
@@ourpnwadventuresYup that is always the best time.
I think I've mentioned this before but I appreciate that you remove the entire tree from the road. So often I come across trees that are only removed enough for a side-by-side to fit past. If you going to do the job do it right 👍
Thanks, as long as I have to tools with me I always try to get the road fully opened. It is frustrating when someone only cuts a narrow path through. Years ago when I was on an off road trail in my jeep I tried to squeeze through a narrow path and tore the plastic fender clips out as I brushed up against one side. Had to take one of the fenders off for the trip home.
Nice 🏕Sure has been a nasty couple of weeks for us out here in the pnw.
Yes it has, clean up has been a slow process but it’s good to see everyone helping each other out and getting the work done. Also really appreciate our local and out of state power crews that have worked their butts off to get power restored.
Who knows what's still out there 😯
Usually it’s just trash out there but sometimes there’s something good that can be given a new home.
Fascinating museum that demonstrates live glassworking. 😀
It’s very interesting to watch the whole process as they turn a lump of glass into a piece of art.
Husky did some ez work there Scott! You do the job right out there on the trail Buddy!
@@ElectricDanielBoone Yes sir. Got that tree plus another one.
All my life whenever I am out and come across a removed tree I always say thankyou to the anonymous hero. You even left firewood. Thanks Scott. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
@@dandog7653 Thanks. I appreciate it. I usually grab a little if I’m going to use it and leave some for the next folks. Happy Thanksgiving 🦃.
very nice campsite ! a bit nerve wracking when you were stuck on this road with the steep drop. But at least we know that if you published the video, that everything turned out fine for you and that you survived the adventure safe and sound !
@@positiveattitudebymichusa It was the first time I’d been stuck in that truck but I’m sure it won’t be the last. How far I go up the sketchy roads depends on how much recovery gear I have. I get stuck in snow every year. 🤣
Is this up above Sequim bay?
@@CampingthePNW Little bit further south. Kinda near Duckabush.
Wildlife it’s a great 👍 🎉🏕️🗺️
Thanks.
Change the theme from just camping to "Survival Challenge" With equipment from a certain website. Should boost engagement.
@@UnboxAnalysisOfficial Thanks for the suggestion but I try to keep my little channel mellow and focused on camping and hiking without pushing products or creating bushcraft or survival scenarios.
Well that was off to an exciting start! You definitely picked the right side of the road to slide off. Great that you were able to self-recover. The camp looked really cozy, especially with that tiny wood stove. Great adventure!
@@HikerT A road I shouldn’t have traveled up but I’ve said that many times before, I guess I don’t learn 🤣. That camping spot is really nice but kinda hard to get back out of. The little wood stove sure helps when it’s cold and wet out and sometimes for cooking too. Thanks for watching.
Great video! Really cool that you got to see the grouse doing his dance. The sound of the rain coming down on the shelter was wonderful, and your dinner looked delicious. Thanks for bringing us along!
@@HikerT That grouse was cool to see, I’d never seen on putting on a show like that before. Dinner was delicious. Thanks for watching.
A great place to camp and all worked out fine! Awesome!!
@@wendingourway yes sir, it was a good trip.
That road looked knarly. Were you satisfied with how the truck performed?
@@goldfinger180024 Yeah that road was narrow and sketchy and got really steep so I turned back. Truck did pretty good, the tires on it aren’t the best for snowy and muddy roads but so far I haven’t had any issues other than sliding off the road this last time.
Hey, I give you loads of credit for trying! I think I’d have been too chicken to go nearly as far as you did!😂
@ Sometimes the lack of a good turnaround spot pushes the fun meter a little too far. I still had to back up about half a mile but at least it was on a wider section of the road.
Great campsite and snow recovery. Love the shot of the fog on the lake. 👏
@@ourpnwadventures Thanks. It’s a really nice spot, I hope get back there in the summer for a swim.
There before or not, that's a nice spot
@@rdulaneyjr Yup the really nice ones get repeat visits through the years. I haven’t been there in summer yet so maybe next year for that trip.
Well that reminds me I better put my snow shovel in the FJ. Good thing you had those traction boards. Nice campsite there by the lake, and it even had free firewood! Another fun video got me pumped up for this weekend's trip
@@dandog7653 Free firewood is my favorite. I’m usually not a big fan of the traction boards but they sure come in handy sometimes. I only carry them in the snowy season. A shovel is a must have though. It’s a really nice spot but a bit of journey to get back out of.
❤❤❤❤love
Thanks 😎
Scott this looks a fun trip. Jake McClellan The Oregon Boy 👦
It was a nice trip and a good test of how the new truck does in snow and rough terrain.
very nice ! definitely wet, a lot of rain and a lot of water running in the cascades and the streams. My hikes with waterfalls in October : no waterfalls, only a trickle, I had to check with the picture on the hike guide to be sure I was really in front of said waterfall. Rain is coming our way tomorrow hopefully and maybe even a dusting of snow ! You were brave on sleeping in that open canopy with all that water creeping on your "dry" spot.
It was a very wet camp, I would have preferred snow but at least there was almost no one else around. Hope your rainy season starts soon.
Beautiful snowy hike! I think the snow is piling up at Snoqualmie Pass tonight! 😄❄️❄️❄️
@@JenniferLupine Thanks, yup it looks like winter is here a bit early.
I think I recognize the lake!! 😄💙
@@JenniferLupine I bet you do, it’s Baker Lake.
@ 💙💙
That didn’t look all that comfortable Scott!
@@goldfinger180024 It wasn’t ideal but I’ve slept in worse. I have several tents and I usually bring two on trips in case I want a different set up but this time I only brought one that doesn’t have a bottom other than a liner (mini peak xl pro) and just didn’t want to mess with having everything soaked.
We work around people's homes regularly. The benefit for us with these saws is 7am until 9 am. After the morning hours we can use both Elec and Gas and go to the gas as the batteries run out, or if we get to the bigger cuts. We have this Husky 350 and I love it. We never run on booster mode so the battery lasts a pretty long time. My unit came all total $404 with a second battery promotion as advertised. The second battery is a little smaller than the original but it works fine. Really like this saw. The batteries charge up pretty quick. Strong little saw.
@@gencombuilding100 Yup they are great saws for getting the work done in the early morning without waking the neighborhood up. Really nice to have too for quick jobs without having to pull the gas saw out.
Love your vids, keep 'em coming.
Thanks, will do.
Awesome footage of the Grouse Dance
Thanks. It was amazing to see, I didn’t know they did that.
Think I actually prefer the snow to the rain...but at least with the rain you don't have to shovel it! lol
Ha ha that’s true, no shoveling the rain but I would have also preferred the snow. Would have looked more magical out there. I’ll have to try again when it gets colder.
Nice campsite, I especially like that grouse. Once before I had a canopy and I was camping in my cabin tent I awoke and seeing someone in the dim Morning Light standing in my tent. I was terrified, for about 2 or 3 seconds before I remembered I had hung my coat and hat on my tripod!😂
That grouse dancing was amazing, I’d never seen one doing that before. Seeing an outline that I thought I was a person would freak me out too. I’ve woke up a couple times thinking I was in a different spot and had some moments of confusion. I woke up once and thought my shoes were stolen cause I got out of the tent on the opposite side.
Beautiful lake! Great to see the grouse display!! I've come across grouse before, but haven't seen this, quite fancy! Challenging camping in the steady rain- great that you got a fire going... I think the rain on the tarp would make it hard for me to sleep, but I'd love being out in the fresh air!! Hope you got everything dried out!! :) Like!
Thanks Jen. First time I’d seen that dance, it was interesting to watch. I’m not a big fan of the rain camping but have ti do one every once in awhile. Nice thing about it is there was almost no one else around.
@@scottalpine Great spotting and filming the dance!! The Lake sure looked pretty!

Thanks Jake, I am not fond of camping in the rain either. I was hoping for a snow camp but that was not to be.
Excellent snow adventure ! Wow that much snow early November ! Send some our way, we are still dry very dry North East. I canceled all my potential hikes even in my local reservation, too risky with these fires. Anyway the air is not good to breathe, it even stinks literally with some bad scents at times (not even wood fire scent)
@@positiveattitudebymichusa It’s definitely our rainy snowy season here. I hope you get some rain there soon to help clean the air up.
Excellent adventure once again, very good to see the hot tent set up in action and the Frontier too !
