BIG ASS HOOD
I just got this helmet today! I've been welding for 3-4 months and taught on the job. This video explained it so well, and im confident in my purchase choice.
Glad to hear it my friend! Thx for the feedback, did you get to use my discount code? If not, hit me on IG and I'll share it with you, you can use it for consumables or another lid :)
This helmet is disappointing. Headgear wears out fast, will not stay up. Trying to cut with this sucks, will not hold the correct shade.
can you wear a resirator under these hoods?
Would it fit a standard 3m respirator with pancake filters?
What is the weight?
3m 9100xxi is better
right on
Have you used the esab a60?
sorry, hard to hear you because background is a bit louder than your voice. I was wondering about the difference between the CLT and the lower end Optrel models, is there a vid on that? thnx
Just ordered one! Thanks for the great video!
Mine I hope you used my discount code!!
Nice review pal, im looking at the helix.
The Helix is top of my wish list...just out of reach for me at this time.
where can I buy that daggum shirt?!?
Hahaah that's an OG design , that one is the last of it's kind, for many years now. Perhaps I do a throwback run soon... What size?!
@@birdmanthewelder L ! :)
@@eimkeith I don't have any in this design, but have L's in another design. DM me on IG and I'll send you pics my man
@@birdmanthewelder I'll do it! also, FWIW I was taught "lid" but who knows?
I have the clt and when I’m welding and the shade level is inconsistent and shade levels are not the same left to right, is the Quattro full shade for whole screen? Because the clt was shade and no shade in different angles
If that makes sense
There are no videos of welders who complain of eye problems after using more expensive helmets. Where is the scientific proof any ADF helmet actually blocks sufficient harmful rays? No company places their ADF filter in a test instrument to prove UVA-B-C, etc. blockage.
That is a question I do not have an answer to.
I’m by no means an expert, but I’m pretty sure the “auto darkening” LCD element of an ADF is only to help dim the light emitted by the weld so you can see what you’re doing. All of the UV / IR rays are blocked by the glass layer / layers of the lens before they reach the LCD, so all of the harmful rays are filtered even in an un-darkened state. This requirement is covered under US safety standard ANSI Z87.1 which Optrel and, as far as I know, all other well established brands comply with. I imagine this safety standard is based on sort of tests you referred to, so I would think that the companies must either test their lenses themselves in order to comply, or use materials that are already proven to provide the necessary protection.
I'm seriously wanting to try one. Never had Optrel but I know they have been around for a long time. Currently using a Speedglas 9100x.
Worst design. The face shield should be behind the lens not in front of it. Terrible engineering
So you own this and use it daily or just trash talking ??
Nice!
🤩
💀
🙌
Ohhh shit thats nice
I bought the panoramaxx clt... on the lowest sensitivity rating the lights in my house still make it auto darken. I feel like im going to have to always have it set to grind mode in the shop which is annoying bec i will see the blue light all the time and have to switch to weld mode right when i am about to weld. Kind of regret the purchase or maybe i bought a defective one? Literally just got it today and the sensitivity on it is piss poor.
How much are the shields?
All depends on where you are. I recommend go straight to the www.optrel.us website and use my deep discount code for the best price
@@birdmanthewelder do they ship worldwide?
@@SymbolsNSpace this I am not sure. Best to check the website or reach out to them via socials I think. Cheers!
@@birdmanthewelder Thank you mate!
Is this a good multi use welder?? Also how does this compare to ESAB sentinel ?
Hey boss. I use this thing personally for tig work on the bench, but how do you mean, multi-use? I cannot compare to the ESAB Sentinel as I haven't spent much time behind the ESAB or compared side by side. I wasn't a fan of the yellow window, maybe they have changed that though.
@@birdmanthewelder multi process as in like (MiG , TIG, stick.etc) also the ESAB has a clear visor but to be brutally honest everyone in my class has them and i wanna stick out like a sore 👍🏽
Nothing but the best at BMTW
Get after it! Love the music too!
Good song choice too
Yeeeeah boi! 🙏
Ayy niceee
When the first crystal helmet came out. It taught me that if you can't see it, you can't weld it. Might sound funny, but a lot of beginners keeping burning their tungstens, and then I can already see their coupon and analyze that they're are not seeing what they are welding. They keep practicing and think they're going to recognize the puddle looking closer at their peice. My eyes don't do great with the green tint when it comes to tig. I thought I sucked and then used the crystal 2.0. I was welding very well within a week.
Wow, that's great feedback! It definitley helps me as well. Glad to hear you're enjoying the lid as much as I do! Thx for sharing. Hit me on IG at @birdmanthewelder when you're ready to make a purchase on Optrel's website for EVERYTHING they offer. It's worth dropping me a line, trust me!
After watching this video, I went over to their site and used their code on a Panormaxx CLT. Wow! Your code is fantastic! I just got the helmet the other day and it's like wearing a nice pair of sunglasses in it's light state or dark state. I'm surprised there aren't more reviews about this helmet. It's amazing. Thank you for making this video and the discount code!
Awwww YEaaaah that's what I like to hear!! Thanks for the love and the feedback! Happy welding buddy!
What's the code. I am ready to buy.
@@S30Build hit me up on IG or email me at shaun@birdmanthewelder.com for the code 🙏🏻
Hey Birdman, is the code still available for this lid?
Would wearing a respirator interfere with the hood a bit?
Hey! I found it to not be bad AS LONG as you take the time to adjust your helmet properly. I wear mine with the Swiss Air unit no problem, and have tried it with my 3M silicone half mask respirator
@@birdmanthewelder Thanks! I have the 3M half mask as well. Let’s see how it goes

I've been looking into this helmet for awhile now and learned a lot from the video and just reading the comments and the your feed back which is awesome. I'm in welding school and loving it. I got a decent helmet that helped a lot but as I proceed at the rate I'm going I've started to notice it's limitations. So I'm looking into ordering this one. Thank you for the video and the feed back to the community.

Thanks for sharing it got great reviews from videos like this. Helped me make my mind up whether you get it and well I think I’m gonna get it for Christmas……Keep on rockin…..

I just came across your presentation. I have both panoramaxx clt and the crystal 2.0. For tig welding sheet steel they are NOT equivalent in terms of 2.0 light throughput or clarity in either the light or the dark state. Have you ever tried the crystal 2.0? The thing I hate about that helmet is the super small field of view but the soda straw view you get is super clear. I was really hoping the clt would give the best of both worlds but it does not....if you have any comments they would be greatly appreciated.
Interesting feedback. I have both lids, but have not done any thourough side by side testing. Perhaps I will and make an updated video. For the most part, I use my Crystal 2.0 for mig, and My Pano CLT for tig. You have peaked my curiosity, it is now on my list of things to look into further
can you adjust the altitude. lowering it for instance
This welding helmet is on its own league. Just received it and it is so clear that I cringe every time before I press the tig trigger as I get feeling it will flash my eyes. But of course it doesn`t, works perfectly. Maybe some day I get used to it. Awesome helmet. Expensive but very well worth it.
Glad you're enjoying it! Thx for the feedback! 🙌
Is it used against silica dust
That's a question better suited to the Optrel team my friend 🙏🏻
Yes it will that is welding fumes lol
Hey dude! How do you think this compares to the 3m GD-05 with the curved glass? I'm a welding student with Bell's Palsy, so I have been looking for the best lens possible. Because of my condition I have some sight issues and focus issues when I'm trying to weld in corners. Still brand new with only 6 weeks, but looking for any advantage to help while I am recovering from Bell's.
Hey boss! I have not used a 3M lid probably since 2002 if I recall correctly. Been using Optrel hoods since about 2003/2004 I think so I don't have any input on the comparison. I can say that having the lens so close to the face on this particular hood definitely widens the field of vision. Email me at birdman604@gmail.com or DM me on Instagram if you want my deep discount code my friend!
Curious about the field of vision on this. That's why I came to UA-cam. Does the nose bridge get in the way at all? Or does the fact that the filter is now so close to your eyes due to that unique shape compensate and give near-unlimited visibility?
Hey there! When the helmet is adjusted properly to fit your noggin, you shouldn't find any issue with it in relation to the nose. You're accurate with the visibility, due to the lens shape and proximity to the face, FOV is really great
One more question, the CLT has a blueish tint while welding where I know at one time the Panoramaxx had a greenish tint. Is that still true?
The Panoramaxx line has a handful of different lens options, such as CLT which is the same hue as the Crystal 2.0 and I'd have to pop the other models on again to refresh my memory on the 2.5 and Quattro colour shade
Hey man love the video but have couple questions I'm newer into the welding field and I'm doing a little bit of everything so I was looking at the esab a 50 or some of the optrel hoods which are a bit pricier but if they are worth iy. So first I would ask which would u honestly say is better and second where would I get and use the coupon code for optrel. Thank you
Addison my friend, thx for the positive feedback! So this may ramble on a bit, but, waaaaaay back when I myself was newer into the welding field (2003-ish), my employer went halfers with me on an Optrel Satellite, which I believe the e684 is the modern day reincarnation of that. I still use that same lid to THIS DAY. They may be pricier, but I have never looked back and now own many different models and products by Optrel. The value for your money cannot be matched in my experience. As far as lids for you for general purpose, if you're budget conscious you shouldn't be disappointed with the VegaView 2.5, and if you're alright to spend a few more bucks the Panoramaxx 2.5 is even nicer. Hope that helps! If you don't follow me on IG yet go over and find @birdmanthewelder then DM me for the code. Trust me the code is worth it.
@@birdmanthewelder ok that helps alot I'll see around price and try to establish limit. I'll see if the code helps me in anyway thabk you. I do not have IG but I may use someone else's 🤔😂
send an email to Birdman604@gmail.com for the code 👍
Thank you for this review and thank you for the coupon code, it is awesome!!!!!
Right on! What did you end up getting?!
Is the CLT actually clear? capable of medium to heavy duty work? and is it fragile like the 2.5?
I find it literally crystal clear, it def lives up to it's name. Work duty is subjective if you ask me. I have had many Optrel helmets over the years, and all of them have stood up to my not-so-gentle treatment. If you anticipate dropping off the fourth story of a scaffold in a boilerhouse, it may not come out unscathed...or maybe it will. I cannot speak too much to the limits of abuse it will take and keep tickin' but I can say I am not light on mine and they stand up. My original Optrel Satellite ADF is about 15yrs old and STILL going strong.
@@birdmanthewelder I have had 2 2.5's and they both failed in a 1 month span of use, 2nd one the glass cracked while welding. Hopefully CLT is better in that regards.
Yikes! I've never had any issues like that with mine.
Love your review. I just bought this helmet waiting for it to arrive. Can't wait to try it. Subbed to you birdman. Keep the videos coming!! Thanks
Hey, glad to hear it!! I am sure you will love it, but let me know when you've had a chance to use it. Thx for the feedback pal!
What is the coupon code?
Truly an amazing helmet it really is hard to explain exactly how clear this thing is compared to the miller elite and the esab sentinel
I agree 👍
Your coupon is NO JOKE! Thank you! I had the black one in my Amazon cart and it was no longer available this morning. I was messing around, watching more vids and saw your coupon mention. Went to their site and got the silver one with 2 cheater lenses for less than Amazon. Over $200 in savings! I can't wait to try it out. Good equipment does make you want to spend more time on things.
