SoundMe HERA Research Project

Sound Memories - The Musical Past in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe ("SoundMe" for short) is a collaborative research project funded by HERA (Humanities in the European Research Area). The project brings together teams of researchers from the University of Cambridge, Heidelberg University/University of Zurich, Charles University of Prague, the Polish Academy of Sciences, and Utrecht University.
Our project explores the mechanisms by which Europeans of a distant past (c. 1200-1600) used collective musical memory to shape cultural and political behaviour. Additionally, this research project asks in which ways these mechanisms are relevant to the societies of 21st-century Europe. Our UA-cam channel is one of the many ways we use to illustrate the results of our research, with project teams and Associate Partners also involved in concerts, workshops, conferences, publications and more.

Ulrike Hascher-Burger (1955-2020) – In memoriam
Ulrike Hascher-Burger (1955-2020) was a musicologist and a medievalist. The quality and quantity of her publications attest to her expertise in codicology, in the devotio moderna and its music, as well as the great interest and pleasure she had in collaborating with other scholars.
In the SoundMe HERA project, Ulrike was an expert, a colleague, a supervisor, and a friend. She put her gigantic bibliographical knowledge at the service of the Utrecht team and offered her critical thinking to the whole project. She actively connected musicology and musical performance, bringing the repertoire of her expertise to a lively and critical sounding experience.
Ulrike was devoted to her work and, more importantly, she succeeded in finding a proper work/life balance. Ulrike was a very warm woman, smiling, encouraging, open to different perspectives and always willing to share her findings - whether these were the discovery of a new musical fragment or the mixing of red wine with orange juice.
With a beer or a cup of tea, in a library or in her cosy study room, during a project meeting or during a supervision meeting, during a conference or after a concert, about singing nuns or about medicinal plants, discussions with Ulrike were always enriching. She will be remembered as a highly knowledgeable and truly joyful woman.

Ty nevyrazne jemne hlasy se k tomu vubec nehodi, vy to neslysiste?? Tato skladba absolutne musi mit vyrazny baryton. Nevim proc tolik udajnych odborniku neciti to zasadni, a to je ze toto je momumentalni, extremne silna skladba, ktera potrebuje muzsky hluboky a velice sebevedomy hlas, a drzet se originalu a nedelat z toho paskvil.
No, hlavně to chce (podobně jako Kdož jsú Boží bojovníci) mnohem větší sbor … když jsem v roce 1989 slyšel tohle zpívat celého svatého Víta, tak jsem šel do kolen. Ať už jsou Schola Georgiana Pragensis jakkoli skvělí, tak prostě ten efekt v několika lidech neudělají.
Mě se tahle verze líbí víc , než ta utahaná v doprovodu varhan
