Making a Standing Shelf | Basics and Tips to know (subtitled)
When you want to make a freestanding shelf, you may not know how to design and plan it. This is a guide for beginners and intermediate woodworkers that summarizes tips for planning. There are four important points you should know to make a simple shelf. And I'll show you how to make it.
The easiest shelf is a ladder shape, but the example has a slightly more challenging structure. By placing the top board on the side boards, it can also become a bench. By knowing how to make this, you will be able to make any shelf. You can assemble it with screws, but I will introduce a method that uses spline joints and does not require long clamps. This allows you to make shelves of any size. The example is made with resurfaced 1x8 lumber, but it can be made in the same way with 1x8 as it is.
Shelves for storing heavy items, such as bookshelves, need to be strong. They are designed to be reinforced in each area. Details will be explained in the next video.

      I don't use a hand plane after sanding. I thought that many people would finish it with a sander, so I showed that scene first in the video. It is also possible to finish using only a hand plane. I just don't do that. I do a little sanding to remove any unevenness from the plane. It depends on the material, though.

      As I wrote in the description, you can make the shelf with screws, or you can just make it with 1x8s as it is. The basic knowledge to make a shelf is the same. Some people don't want to remain beginners forever, and want to acquire more advanced skills and enjoy woodworking more. You can only do limited things with warped materials. Woodworking starts with flattening the material. Read the description of this channel. I share jigs so that you can make things with just basic power tools. But I'm not saying it's for beginners. It's for people of all levels. It's very easy to make a electric hand planer jig. But the potential of the jig is very high. Isn't it great to be able to do things that you couldn't do before? Hand planing is a subject that many people are interested in, and I am one of them. It's a skill that I learned mostly on my own. But it took a very long time. Thankfully, we have UA-cam now. It only takes a few years to master. And once you understand that everything is connected, you can use hand plane, electric planer jig, and stationary planer in the same way. These videos are meant to inspire everyone who loves woodworking. I hope you find something you want to try and make.

      This is a hobby plane from Kakuri. I think it is the same as a Stanley trimming plane. This is just my personal guess, but I think it is a copy of a Stanley. The advantage of the hobby plane is that you can get replacement blades. Maybe they can be fitted to a Stanley as well. There are some parts where the explanation of how to sharpen the back of the blade is insufficient. Please note that there is a cutting angle on the back of the blade. Enjoy!

      @@kikikumastudio Thank you. I ended up watching the video enough that I was able to customize it to my situation. Mine is slightly different dimensions and very slightly different design (I don't have a router so I used multiple pieces/thicknesses of board with space in between them instead of a groove carved in one piece of board for the sawdust channel). I loved your idea of the larger drill hole in the wood to allow for slight movement of the tracks so as to get them to a true 90 degrees by testing the cuts before finalizing it by drilling down the aluminum. My Makita saw is also a different size than yours and I had to accommodate it's dimensions, including it's sidewinder drive, so I had to grind and sand my right rail to the same height as the plywood bracket. So even with your exact measurements, I would have had to customize them for my saw anyway. I also used a board cut to 45 degrees instead of a bar. And the thing works BEAUTIFULLY! I just made a few series of shelves using it over the last few days and it's perfect. Thanks so much for you videos and your design. You do great work. I also got to visit Tokyo and Kyoto 7 or 8 years ago and I think you have one of the most beautifully organized countries I've ever visited. Interesting. But… the mounting of the hand planer is a bit misconcepted. In neutral position (0mm) the two sections of the base plate are at same hight as the blade with no removal of material. When adjusting the removal, the front base lifts. Both bases have different height and the blade can trimm the surface to the level of the second base. So in first place, Laying the base plates on the aluminum Profil contradicts the functionality of a hand planner as it is designed to glide on the base to late over the surface. Adjusting the removal will tilt the whole planner in this construction. The blade gets low enough to remove wood, but will only work for a few mm then you have to adjust the jig height or workpeace height again. It would be better to use the housing to fix the planner in perfect horizontal orientation with the front base independent moving. This way you can use the planner like normal but the jig acts as a stop if desired depth is reached. You can remove as much as you want without readjusting.

    • @kikikumastudio
      @kikikumastudio Місяць тому

      Can you show us your jig? Of course, you don't drill holes or modify the planer itself, do you? This jig can only cut about 1.5mm at a time, but you can easily adjust the depth by using shims. It can do the work of a jointer and planer. It makes one side flat and then cuts the other side parallel. The aim is to make multiple pieces of material the same thickness. The jig that uses an electric hand planer is not a stationary machines, so it takes a little longer to work. But it works. If you have worked with a hand plane, you will understand this jig better. I am currently working on a video of making a shelf using this jig. Don't miss it!

    • @kikikumastudio
      @kikikumastudio 2 місяці тому

      I love the Rube Goldberg machine, but the idea behind this jig is really practical. I recommend using a drill guide to make and use this jig, but you can do it without it. Same with the saw guide. You'll just get better results if you use those jigs. First of all, the drill guide is a jig for people who don't have a drill press. That's where it all started. If you have a drill press, you can just make a traditional dowel jig. A lot of people don't have stationary machines, so I'm sharing ideas for them. I don't think you've read it yet, but that's what this channel is about. And every idea leads to a new idea, so please share something for the woodworking community.

    • @kikikumastudio
      @kikikumastudio 2 місяці тому

      You know the old-time trick of tracing the dowel position using brads ? This jig makes it easy to do that. How many holes do you drill to make 4 drawers? 96 if you use 3 dowels on each corner. No matter what jig you use, it's the same process over and over again. So, stamp is handy. Old tricks can still be useful today, because sometimes the starting point for solving a problem when building something complex is a very simple solution. Please share a jig that is easier, more accurate, and can be made from scrap materials.

    • @kikikumastudio
      @kikikumastudio 2 місяці тому

      ごくごく普通の作業ですよ。切削は1mm以下でも使うことがよくあります。プランジルーターはこういう作業をするためというか、数ミリずつ削っていく作業がしやすいルーターです。トリマーでもできますよ。深さを調整するのに手数が多くなるだけかな。近年のトリマー(小型ルーター)にはオプションでプランジベースがあるから、後からアップグレードもできますね。

      平面出し作業は刃の摩耗が激しく、思うより早く切れなくなります。治具を作るおつもりなら、2+2デザインのビットがオススメです。切れが違います。ちょっとお高いですが、替え刃もあって、この手のビットとしてはリーズナブル。詳しくはua-cam.com/video/dkf42Q_pvIE/v-deo.html またこのビットを入手したら手カンナのように使える治具にも使えてとても便利です。今までできなかった作業ができるようになりますよ。 ua-cam.com/video/7K1JLEYiWWo/v-deo.html

    質問よろしいでしょうか? 横30センチ、縦15センチのサイズの木材を真っすぐ綺麗に切りたいのですが、このガイドの穴(木材を入れるとこ)を30センチ×15センチにすればいいでしょうか? この動画だと1x6までですが、30センチ×15センチといった大き目のサイズの木材を真っすぐ綺麗に切りたい場合、どういった治具があればいいでしょうか?

    • @kikikumastudio
      @kikikumastudio 2 місяці тому

      横30cmx縦15cmというのは幅30cmx厚み15cmですか?これを手鋸で切るんですよね。丸ノコでも難しい作業ですけど・・できないとは言いたくないですねー。ここはDIYの森ですからね。開口部に30x15cmが入るようにしたら一応理屈ではできるはず。まっすぐきれい・・これは状況次第。もしこの切った材に相手があるのなら・・仕口とかで突き付く相手がいる場合、粗が見えるので気になるかもしれないけど、「気にしない」で解決するしかないかな。でも相手がいない。この材で完結する場合、何かの天板になるとかなら「なんとなくまっすぐきれい」であればいいわけです。取り敢えず切って、切り口をうまく仕上げる。大きめのルーターと3”のストレートビットを用意すれば作業は少し楽に・・あとはひたすらペーパーで作業。木工で言う「まっすぐ、きれい」はとても幅が広いですからね。他にもアイディアあるかもですね。材種と用途がわかるといいアドバイスが出てくるかも・・皆さんどうですか? 厚材ですから関わるすべての作業が簡単ではないし、忍耐も試行錯誤も必要。やるなら覚悟がいります。是非挑戦してみてください。結果も教えてくださいね。

    • @kikikumastudio
      @kikikumastudio 28 днів тому

      どうやってもある程度はズレます。ズレを少なく、ちゃんと接着するにはサネを入れるのがいいかな。きれいに・・は後加工がいりますよ。ルーター等で削ると材が減りますからそれを考えておきましょう。15cmの厚材といっしょに使うのかな?いったい何が出来上がるんでしょう?

      The blade can be used in either direction to cut. If you have recently acquired a plane, it is better to use it in the normal direction. Regarding sharpening the blade, there is a note to add. This blade is sharpened from both sides. Therefore, you need to sharpen the back side as well. If you place a metal ruler on the whetstone and then place the blade on it to sharpen, the angle should be just right. You just have to get used to how the blade extends. Patiently extend it a little at a time and try cutting again. Even if it looks like the blade is not extending, it may be. Just be patient.

      82mmの方がいっぱいありますし、使いやすいのではと思います。どのメーカでもいいのですが、最大切削深さが2mm以上であることと、前後端に底板の出っ張りのある機種がこの治具には向いてます。是非試してみてください。

      アドバイスありがとうございます。 特殊な実験用で薄い板(A4サイズくらいの大きさ)を0.5㎜ずつ削る必要があるため1900Bを選んでみようと思います。用途が限られていることとマキタのパーツがどこでも手に入るのでオーバーホールをして専用加工機を作る予定です。  ※木工になるのかはわかりませんが最終的には樹脂加工などを施し音響関係の実験が目的です。
