London's BUSIEST BUS ROUTE Is CHANGING SOON | Route 18 EXPLAINED (TfL London Bus Changes)
London's busiest bus route, the 18, will be changed soon.
More details about route 18's new contract have been revealed. The route is currently run by RATP, London United. It runs from Park Royal (RP) garage. Route 18 has been confirmed to move to RATP, London Transit's Westbourne Park (X) garage. RATP have ordered new electric double deckers for this route. These will replace the Gemini 2 hybrid and Gemini 3 hybrid buses currently used on the route. It's not yet known what electrics have been ordered for the route. As mentioned earlier, route 18 is the busiest TfL bus route, with 13.02 million passengers in the 2023/2024 period.
Route 18 runs from Sudbury & Harrow Road Station, To Euston Station. Via Wembley Central Station, Stonebridge Park Station, North Circular Road, Harlesden Jubilee Clock, Willesden Junction Station, Kensal Green Station, Royal Oak Station, Edgware Road Station, Marylebone Road, Baker Street Station, Regent's Park Station, Great Portland Street Station, Warren Street Station, and Euston Square Station.
Route 18's peak vehicle requirement was increased on the 31st of August 2024. The route's PVR is now 39 instead of 36. Route 18 is allocated Gemini 3 hybrids. However, Gemini 2 hybrids originally used on routes 139 and 28 appear regularly.
Route 18 is 9 miles (14km) long. The route runs daily, every 4 to 7 minutes. A full journey takes 40 to 90 minutes.
RATP Dev Transit has reached a deal with First Bus. First will take over all of RATP's bus routes in 2025. This includes the subsidiaries London United, London Sovereign and London Transit. This means route 18 will be returning to First Bus. Route 18 was run by First until 2013. The route was included in the sale of Willesden Junction (WJ) garage to Metroline. Route 18 passed to RATP in 2017. In 2018, a StreetDeck demonstrator was trialled. The StreetDeck was withdrawn in 2020. Route 18 was the first route to have real time "Countdown" information systems. These were trialled in 1992.
Route 18 connects to several rail lines, including...
-National Rail (Chiltern Railways) at Sudbury & Harrow Road and Marylebone.
-The London Underground Bakerloo line at Wembley Central, Stonebridge Park, Willesden Junction, Kensal Green, Edgware Road, Marylebone, Baker Street and Regent's Park.
-The London Overground Lioness line at Wembley Central, Stonebridge Park, Willesden Junction, Kensal Green and Euston.
-National Rail (Southern Railway) at Wembley Central,
-The London Overground Mildmay line at Willesden Junction,
-The London Underground Circle line at Royal Oak, Baker Street, Great Portland Street and Euston Square,
-The London Underground Hammersmith & City line at Royal Oak, Baker Street, Great Portland Street and Euston Square,

-The London Underground Metropolitan line at Baker Street, Great Portland Street and Euston Square,
-The London Underground Northern line at Warren Street and Euston,
-The London Underground Victoria line at Warren Street and Euston,

Perhaps a tramway would help?
I think more trams would be good for London although maybe not on the 18. The Bakerloo line already parallels a lot of the route between Baker Street and Harlesden and a modern tram would likely skip stops on the 18's line of route.
I was a 261 driver from 2017 to 2022 one of the best routes but unfortunately long hours and very long shifts I decided to leave the job now I drive Class 1 lorries much better work conditions believe or not less working hours and more money + no abuse from passengers is the best part 👍👍👍
The company First is back after 11 years, yessir
Routes 330 and 474 is passing to Go-Ahead London on 3rd May 2025.
@athavanainkaran2499 I know. And you didn't mention the tenders for the 30, 67, 95, 231, 304, 397, 474, 491, D6, R9 and W16.
@ oh yes. They also announced it today.
Not too sure on where you got the info about the name change interior change and fleet number change, this is new information to us at London United. The name London United will still be on the vehicles, minus RATP, the legal lettering will be First group plc. If we were going to change the interiors on the whole fleet, where would we get the money from? There are more concerns financially then rebranding the fleet.
Oh ok. I don't think first would keep the London United, London Sovereign or London Transit logos on buses though (not the legal lettering). And I did make a mistake where I implied that all buses will be refurbished since they obviously won't refurb the ones that are about to be withdrawn or have already been refurbished
I see this bus route all the time when I’m on my way to college
Nice
UPDATE Route S3 will use the Enviro200 MMCs shown in this video until 2030. The route isn't getting electrics anymore.
@@MostlyBuses1 damn
@Osk1000 ikr. Someone put in an FOI request for details. We wouldn't have known if they didn't lol
@@MostlyBuses1 i wonder when s4 will get electrics because they will eventually have to retire pretty much all the e200s on the route and there is barely any e200mmcs on the route so they would have to order electrics so maybe the electrics could eventually go onto s3 However they could keep the short euro 6 yy64 plate e200s on the route for longer
Why do some London buses have blue light interior and why is it on some buses for example why isnt it on all go ahead e400s and all RATP e200s
GoAhead and RATP stopped speccing them with the blue lights around 2011 but I'm not sure why tbh
The handle bar colours for ratp and ex first london buses are the same right? And also why do some ratp buses have yellow handle bars
They look like the same colour but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a different shade of light blue. The RATP ones with yellow handrails are all gone now. I'm pretty sure they are ex NCP challenger / NSL buses
Controversial opinion: First’s new logo looks hideous. It resembles, more than anything, a bowl of ramen noodles.
I think you're in the majority tbh. A lot of people agree with you (including me)
@ Interestingly the First 2024 livery has still got the old logo.
@31128Charybdis I think they still haven't officially switched yet
@ The new advert by First for First Leicester ( no clue why I’m getting that in York ) uses that as its logo.
I hope 18 get decent buses like BZL or BD11 for capacity busy rammed with passengers
@@Abdul.M. agreed. BZLs would be really nice
That's very sad to hear!
Are the seats the onlt thing thst willvbe changed or will the blue interior of the buses be changed to grey
@cplayzstuff6907 it's not confirmed yet but I will make a follow up video when it is
@@MostlyBuses1 alright
6:02 You forgot that it also meets with the Bakerloo Line at Baker Street
@Penhouse9476 oh yeah thanks for the correction. I think I did quite well considering this was from memory
18 is my favorite route ever
@busestransporta-z781nice. It's one of my favorites too just because of how frequent it is. imo people who are local to the 18 are kind of spoilt even if it's always crowded on weekdays
Wish 15 bus starts from Canning town bus station like N550 at night.
@@adarsh.m1999 agreed. I think it should run express between Blackwall and Canning Town
Connects 18 stations hence busiest. But my favourite is 5 bus (Romford market to Canning town bus station) which is 4th-5th busiest tfl route.
And it also has two long unique sections as well as being very frequent (sometimes more frequent than the Bakerloo line after Queen's Park)
Bus spotting number 266 at its stops… brilliant 🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
Thanks!
I am happy the route is getting brand new buses great video
I'm ok with it as long as the Gemini 3s get used to win the 207 or other routes
The G3s will be reallocated. Just wait for the tenders on routes like the 452 etc. I doubt the 207 will go back to first with the VHs, it’ll go electric either way or could go fully MMC operation with the 270/285’s Smarts especially if the 285 goes electric or is lost. First could bid for the 285 with VHs from the 18 too tbh
207 is a very heavy route, requiring just 9 buses less and is very demanding and very busy. Despite it being surrounded by alternative routes based off of it.
@@zfs.59 hmmm good thinking that makes sense bro.
@@MostlyBuses1 hmm ok
I use this route nearly daily. If you don’t have a bus every 2-5 minutes and instead 9+ minutes, I guarantee you it will be full and standing, unless it’s a quiet day
@spottymaxy1628 yeah if there's a longer wait for a bus it's almost always going to be more crowded but the 18 runs so frequently there will probably be another bus coming soon anyways. That being said I'm not local to the 18 and I bet it gets packed and horrible to use at rush hour. I filmed this video on the weekend to avoid all the crowding
That intro hits close to home… literally.
I like and hate this route as it's really good off peak times and unbearable in peak times I hope this route gets Electroliners.
I've never taken the 18 in rush hour so I can't imagine how bad it is but it's a very good route to ride on the weekends since it's still extremely frequent. A lot of buses were curtailed on Saturday though
@@MostlyBuses1I suppose routes that parallel rail services for long distances (25,29 & 86) are some other examples get so busy due to locals pouring onto them from the stations or if the line runs into an issue they fill up rapidly.
@AB-ii5piu forgot GOAT route 5 bus 😂😂😂 (Canning town bus station to Romford market). Literally near my house on barking road A124 2-3 comes at a time no matter weekday or weekend.
@@adarsh.m1999 the difference between the 5 & those other routes mentioned is that the 5 doesn’t parallel a tube or rail service (district line doesn’t go towards Romford so that doesn’t count). The 25/86 parallel the Elizabeth line while the 29 largely parallels the Piccadilly line (except around the Kings Cross area). 18 parallels the Bakerloo/Overground for most of its route.
@AB-ii5piI wouldn't really say the 29 parallels the Piccadilly line although I did think of the 263 which sort of follows the Northern line as well. The 94 also parallels a large section of the Central line and it was very busy last time I used it.
i’m an 18 driver and i saw someone with a camera at baker street, was wondering if it could have been you lol
I don't use a camera but I have been on a lot of buses from RP recently

Has First CentreWest ever been to Kingston before its demise in 2013?

@@eastlancsesteem no, he's a good mayor (in my opinion). I think now that Labour is in power they'll fund it soon (it's why tube and TfL's rail fares are rising but bus fares are capped).
Nice! I hope the new Electrics will have a higher capacity than the current hybrids. They can only keep increasing the PVR so much to where its effective.
@@nathanw9770 Thanks. And yeah if RATP have already ordered the buses I think it could be more Electroliners since that's what the 31 is getting and they seem to have more capacity than the BD11s judging by that video of one of their interiors.
The 18’s PVR use to be close to 50 back in the days. RATP I remember when they won the route, they ordered a lot of BF67 VHs from VH45216-251 but they could order only so much that they got some spare 65 and 16 regs to cover the rest of the PVR. The spare VHs were meant to deck the 72 in 2016 but it didn’t happen so they went to the 18’s big win. The 18 did have a fair few PVR cuts which released VH45247-251 to the 423 as well as VH45255-257 which was ridiculous as the 18 should never have had PVR curs
I can’t wait to see purple interiors again!
@@eastlancsesteem same. But who knows, maybe First could surprise us with a different interior colour scheme this time
I'm very pleased that the 18 will be based at its original home of Westbourne Park but I still wish that it had a supporting route between Kensal Green and Wembley like the original intention for route 23 before it was changed to Hammersmith.
@@drewphillips2359 Agreed. If they rerouted the 23 and made it a Hammersmith to Wembley Central route I think it would do quite well. They could even reduce the 18's frequency on the weekends although nothing too drastic obviously.
The 23 plan is stupid, I don’t support that one bit. It’s always been a central London route and even then I don’t like what’s happened to the 45. The 45 was a well used central London route until it got cut to elephant and now it’s basically becoming a Morden to Camberwell route. I’m happy the 23 is staying at Aldwych, the routing via green park has done better than the 6 ever has tbh
Even if it is not route 23, tfl should consider having another route that can take passengers from central London to the national stadium
Westbourne Park X Garage was bidded for 18/N18 apparently not RATP RP it didn't even say it on Tender awards
Yeah I was surprised to hear the news as I thought it was staying at a London United garage. I wasn't expecting it to get electrics either
RP is closing soon as well so it won't be able to run the 18 for much longer
@@MostlyBuses1 RP simply isn't needed and is the reason this company does have its own problems where ex-Tower Transit going to benefit from late 2017 space has been up to 150 capacity, old PK closed in 2017.
@@MostlyBuses1220 will probably move to V to share common fleets with the E3 while the 224 would probably be won by Metroline again.
Is there any reason why RATP is leaving London
@HamzaTransport2007 many of their routes aren't profitable and they want to focus on urban rail operations
I’m glad the 18 is going to X, it’ll be good to see EvoSetis, OMEs and BCEs stray on the route and that’s if the BCEs do stay on the 295. I reckon the 18 will get Electroliners to match with the 31
Agreed. It's good to see it going back to (an ex) First garage. Hopefully it'll get moved soon so that ADHs stray on it (hopefully even a VDW as well). I think RATP might not have placed an order yet so it could be First who orders buses, although I think it'll be Electroliners either way.
@@MostlyBuses1ooh a VDW straying onto the route is the closest thing you can get to one of the BF60’s straying onto the route. It’s a shame they were withdrawn after only 7 years.
Yeah a VDW would be the closest thing to the Metroline West B9TL days on the 18 when it had those BF60 VWs. The thing is, they only lasted 7 years as they were leased so once the 18 was lost to RATP and mind you the route did have a higher PVR up to nearly 50 buses, there was just lots of VWs spare and there was nowhere for them to go for Metroline to extend the lease so they had to go either way. I remember one or two BF60 lasted at AH until early 2018 for a while covering for the 190’s off the road single decks and for refurb floats for the 237/E2’s 10/60 reg batches
1:35 they will be 16 years old as those Enviro400H were made in 2012.
@wizzyozzy I think they will be 17 in 2028. I was hesitant to put that in the video because I thought TfL didn't allow buses to be more than 15 years old at the start / end of contracts but apparently the 56 is keeping the LX61s.
RATP London will sold to FirstBus in London next year.
RATP London will no longer operating London Buses forever. R.I.P - RATP London!
@@MuhammedRahman-d4l That's what the last video was about
But at the same time childhood will be back in London first!
@@OmarZamel-w8v Yeah it's quite nice to see them return to routes like the 18
Until 2034,it is Extremely unlikely 405 will be electrified until then
@NathaanRagasaaRooks why? It's meant to be electric by next year. The HTs are probably going to another route
@ ok
@NathaanRagasaaRooks and btw the deadline for EVs is now 2030, not 2034
Did you make a mistake saying 3 routes will get electrics because only 61 and 261 are getting electrics
@@southeastlondontransport5859 oh yeah I did. It was because this was meant to be paired with the D8 and 46 video and the D8 is getting electrics which is why I put 3 routes instead of 2.
@MostlyBuses1 ohh fair enough
Atp TFL are gonna increase 18s PVR until passengers feel satisfied, I have feeling but I hope they do enough to 18!
@HampshireTransport007 They already increased it to 39 in August
