I build and shoot black powder rifles and pistols. I’m hoping to branch into other historical weapons over time.

Gangnam Style Jeju Branch Christmas Party
Hi
I built this kit in the 1970’s. Tried to bend the trigger guard and broke a piece off behind the trigger. Turned out pretty nice for a dumb teenager building it. I’ve shot it many times, lot of fun with a .45 patched round ball. Still have it on my roll top desk.
Thank you so much for the video
Nice kit. Have fun building it. Sorry the ripple is missing.
I bought this same kit built it and put it in my grandson pirate treasure chest we found in Florida.
I built one of these exact same pistols in the 1970’s with my dad. Still have it and I’ve shot it.
Same here ..on a Christmas day great memories 🙏🏻✨️
I will try and keep a long story short. 74-86 I was in the submarine force. Submariners celebrate certain milestones during the patrol such as halfway night (patrol 1/2 over) and another is casino night. The winners of the games on casino night could pick one of many prizes offered. I won at Spades and chose the Philadelphia Derringer kit. Everything went well with the build and I added a few modifications. 1: I inlaid designs on the grip with silver wire. 2: I silver brazed a small brass handmade blade front sight to the barrel. 3: I hand rubbed 8 coats of linseed oil to finish the wood to a high polish/glass like gloss. 4: I cleaned up the trigger to make it crisper. 5: I browned the barrel instead using blueing. I shoot all handguns at a minimum 25 yds, adding the front blade sight allowed me to repeatedly hit center mass with a maximum 4" spread. For best accuracy you need to experiment with ball diameter and patch thickness for a particular firearm. Anyway, this pistol was my first black powder gun/build and created a lifelong hobby that at 72 yrs old I still enjoy. I've given most of my builds to my children and grandchildren and I continue building to this day. I need to pass stuff on to my growing collection of great grandchildren! The gov't does not pay for prizes, they are purchased by the boat's volunteer recreation committee that raises money through entry fees for the games, money made through sales of T-shirts, lighters and other souvenirs, and various functions and dinners while in port. Your tax dollars are not at work here.
yeah but the we tax payers still sent you to those ports and you didn’t get the money for those t shirts from working at McDonald’s …..
My wife bought me a Harper's Ferry .58 cal percussion pistol on our first or second anniversary (I feel like a complete ass for not remembering). It took some time to put together and to find the right flint... and to harden the frizzen in Kasenit and a propane torch (what the hell Pietta was thinking producing dead-soft steel as a frizzen is beyond me). After dialing in, this is one AWESOME flintlock pistol! I can understand the excitement!
I have been building BP pistols and rifles since the 70s, my first was the Philadelphia Derringer. I had an authentic 1842 Harper's Ferry musket that was rifled and fitted with an adjustable rear sight to be used as a sniper rifle, only 2000 were modified by the arsenal. I took the rifle to a gunsmith for evaluation and he said "the bore is like new, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot this rifle". I put about 100 rounds through this antique before giving it to my oldest son. After building a few kits I started building from scratch including cutting the tree, drying the wood, and milling the lumber. Dixie Gun Works used to have tons of original barrels, lock parts, hardware, and just about everything else, kind of like a civil war military surplus store. Today Dixie is a good place to find stuff but nowhere near like it was in the 70s and 80s when BP was just beginning to become popular. Used to be new old stock parts were cheap and available, prices have risen dramatically over the years. I don't wish to criticize but a flintlock is a flintlock, not percussion. Most percussion guns use standard percussion caps, my 1842 uses winged musket caps about double the size of the standard. Regarding caps. This makes no sense to me but there are no standard cap sizes between manufacturers. A Remington #11 cap is not the same as a CCI #11, the dimensions are all different. Here is a link to a size chart, scroll down to see the chart. www.muzzleloadingforum.com/threads/cap-size.122566/

Hi Mr chandler
Very cool mr chandler how’s your winter break going
Hi mr chandler
Hi mr chandler
good job Mr.Chandler
Sooooo, I assume Hollywood exaggerates when they show soldiers in battle dumping powder straight into the barrel? Did they really measure powder every time that fast?
@@helenking4737 I’m not sure but I think a lot of the time they would use pre-measured powder charges wrapped in paper (they do show this once in the movie Glory). But I think someone who is experienced would have a pretty good idea of how much powder to put in and could just pour it down the barrel. The problem with that is it’s not very safe because if there’s cinders in the barrel still they could ignite the powder and it could come up the barrel and ignite your whole powder horn right in your face.
Good job and congrats
Congrats on the build! Looks like fun.
Basis should pay you more from two students in 6th grade
