Love these videos! Thank you for sharing.❤
Thanks for watching!!
👍
Great intro!🎉
Thank you for this fantastic video! The work you have put into it is very apparent. I spent hours trying to find pictures of clay seals for a history presentation--it takes time to track down good, comprehensive images! In the future, I will be using your video instead of my pictures! I was wondering, did ancient people ever make their seals out of clay? I love doing living history activities with my students, and had been thinking about having them make their own clay seals. Your examples, however, show the seals made from stone or metal, so I'm not sure if it would be good to have my elementary students make clay seals. Thank you!
Hello, thank you for your kind note! I don't know of any examples of clay seals from Mesopotamia, but it is possible that they existed as a more affordable alternative to stone ones, but did not survive in the archaeological record. I think making clay ones would be perfectly acceptable for an elementary school activity! I just ordered some 3D printed scans of seals to do a follow up video on how you would make an envelope and seal it!
This is amazing 🤩 Thank you so much! Absolutely LOVING your channel!
Thanks so much for watching!!!
Great 👍
So glad you are posting longer form content here!
Thanks for watching!! And for coming over from TikTok I presume? :)

I realized I forgot to talk about the English th sound, that also doesn't exist in cuneiform, but you could use a š (sh) or ṣ (tz) just a t. Arabic ث is related to Akkadian t, and ظ related to Akkadian ṣ, if you want to get really specific! This chart on Wikipedia is useful for looking at the development of phonemes from Akkadian to other languages like Arabic, Aramaic, and Hebrew: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akkadian_language#Phonology
And Old Akkadian th bekame sh in Old Babylonian afaik?
Loved this! 𒅗 𒊭 𒆸
This is prime lesson planning for any ancient history class
I always do this with my undergraduate students, and they always love it!
Thank you for this fascinating and comprehensive video!
Thank you for watching!!
This channel HAS to pop off for its quality mate
Thanks so much! I just hope it gets out to the folks who are interested!
Thank you so much for this! This is so clear and concise and gave me a better understanding of cuneiform script!
Thanks so much for watching!
First crack at it -- might revise how I'm doing the vowels: 𒋛 𒋼 𒌁 𒁕 𒉌 𒂖 𒌀
does cuneiform have a way to represent the soft "j" sound?
Unfortunately not! Phonologically, the g in Akkadian is related to Arabic ج which in some dialects can be that soft j, so maybe in Akkadian it was not pronounced exactly like the hard g in English. So you could do that, or maybe even the š (sh) might sound a little closer?
Can you guess my name? (𒀴𒌋𒀭)
Arad-u-an!
@wedgie_bce the servant of the Sky god 😁 It means a lot to me that foreign people are interested in my ancestors' heritage. BTW, I am a Mandaean from Di Qar, the capital city of ancient Sumer, my hometown was near the Ur ziggurat.

What a fascinating video and channel to have the algorithm push to me. Great watch! Very well portrayed and interesting.
Thanks for watching! The algorithm works in mysterious ways lol!
This is the best description of how to write in cuneiform I’ve ever come across (and I’ve read entire books about the subject). Thank you 🙏🏻
Thank you for watching, and all the amazing work you are doing! Can't wait for your book!
My name is easy!
Can’t wait to use this with my class!
Can't wait to hear about how it goes!!
@@wedgie_bce I know the Alexandria example wasn't for me but we're gonna pretend lol
Oh I was thinking of you when I used that as an example! I snuck some other friend names in there too, it's hard to come up with names out of the blue to show different phonemic situations lol
@ I’m so honored!!!
This is really excellent, and well researched! Thank you!
Thank you!!
This is SO cool.
Thanks for watching!!!
Thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Great presentation. I quite enjoyed the pronunciation and translation and look forward to hearing more in the future.
The next vid on Maqlû will be much much more text focused!
Very well done!!! Thanks for sharing!!! New subscriber here and have a great day looking forward to more!!!
Thanks for watching! Will have a new video out by next Friday!
Great video Kelsie! I learned a ton. I never really thought about the wealth implications of owning a seal.
Thanks for watching! There are some texts that mention the person involved didn't have a seal, so instead they used their fingernail or borrowed a seal so that they could mark their acknowledgment of a legal decision on a tablet somehow!
Thank you, i was wondering how to refer to the president the ancestral way
Dude you're so right
Really interesting stuff!
Thanks for watching!
This is so well-explained, looking forward to more!
Thanks so much for watching! Next up is a video on countering harmful magic, with the text series Maqlû!
What a fantastic video! I enjoy watching videos about Ancient Mesopotamia but I'm only just now learning clay envelopes were a thing - so interesting! Really good work, keep it up!
I was surprised the first time I saw a clay envelope too, but it makes so much sense!
I trust you because of your glasses and general vibe
My exact thought when I clicked the video: Clever way to advertise a VPN service!
I realized that as I was writing the script, and figured I should acknowledge that was not the point lolol
The cylinder seals are so unbelievably cool
They are so cool! And so tiny and so detailed! I love looking at all of the different designs!
1. love this channel, deserves more subscribers. will be sharing on my twitter! 2. this is going to seem random, but have you ever seen The Librarian movies or The Librarians tv show because I think you would like it
Thanks so much! I actually just recently watched The Librarian: Quest for the Spear, and thought it was really fun! Need to check out the show and the other movies!
@@wedgie_bce Haha i could basically sense in my soul you would love this franchise lol you'll love the show. There's actually a second sequel show coming out this year called The Librarians: The Next Chapter. But yeah, I'm always asking my fellow history nerds this cause its basically made for us.
Yes. Subbed.
Thanks!
dudee!! your setup reminds me of religion for breakfast. i love the bautta behind you!! keep up the killer work!!!!
Thanks for watching! Esoterica and Religion for Breakfast are def a source of inspiration!
Woop! What a gem. Sub'ed ❤
Thanks so much for watching!
Wonder what the pig cylinder was used for, maybe it was used for shipping pork.
Maybe! Or maybe the owner of the seal was just a goofy dude lol!
@@wedgie_bce Piggy is my nickname of Trump LOL!!!
I’ve never commented on UA-cam before in the entire 10 years it’s been with us, but I want the algorithm to boost this. Great video!! I thought it had hundreds of thousands of views and when I was it was less than 500 I was ASTOUNDED - subscribed, hope the algorithm boosts you ❤
Thank you so so much for your very kind comment! I just started on here after doing TikTok for a while, more videos coming soon!!!
My mother's milk was poisonous to me due to our clashing blood-types. I wonder if Lamashtu was not seen as a spirit or deity inhabiting a mother whose milk was poisonous to her baby. Maybe that could explain the empathy towards her and the ritual to send her away.
Oh interesting! I am working on a conference presentation now on Lamaštu as an embodiment of all the anxieties that come along with motherhood, I will have to add this!
@wedgie_bce omg! That sounds amazing! I hope you will share some of your ideas and findings with us 🙏
gotta love an acrostic! didn't know they were so old, but it's the most basic way to encode information into a poem! Of course they had acrostics. I'd love to find out more about cuneiform poetry now... lol
Thanks for watching! The consonantal root system of semitic languages like Akkadian allows for all sorts of word play and poetic language, the vid I'm working on next will be on some incantations against harmful magic, and they have some really cool stuff going on!
great Video. Looks like my watch history wont just be Irving Finkel vids lol.
Thanks for watching! I think that there should always be MORE cuneiform content lolol
Cuneiform plushie!!! Omg I SO WANT! Where can one get that :O! So rare to find cuneiform stuff, haha.
That's Tuppi! They were designed for the Institute for the Study of Ancient Culture's exhibit on Old Babylonian scribal education. I just looked, and I guess they are sold out now, but you could get them online at one point: isac.uchicago.edu/visit/museum-shop-suq
@@wedgie_bce Ahw! What a perfect name <3
cannot believe i happened to find such an underrated channel. hope ur enjoying what ur doing and keep it up!!
Thanks for watching! I'm just starting over here now, did TikTok regularly for a couple years, then took a break to work on PhD program stuff, now back to making videos!
Love this! I can't wait to see more from this channel!
Going to get into some really obscure, magical science stuff next, I can't wait!
Cuneiform is complicated AF. It makes sense something came before it.
My email signature and company logo is my seal. I wish we still used seals on letters and forms.
oh that's amazing!! I also want to design my own cylinder seal and maybe 3D print it, that is an upcoming project...
@ I meant my email signature is my modern day seal, not a physical seal.
Ah gotcha, but my misunderstanding gave me the idea to make a cylinder seal image for my emails lol!
How did anyone decipher this? Was it explained in other ancient cultures?
Akkadian is related to other semitic languages, so cognates and knowing the development of phonemes helps! There is also a “Rosetta Stone” sort of trilingual inscription, the Behistun inscription, which helped with the deciphering of Sumero-Akkadian cuneiform! Will make more videos of deciphering eventually, in the process of transferring over from TikTok!
