Is 61 Megapixels Overkill? | SONY A7rIV REVIEW
The Sony A7riv boasts a whopping 61mp sensor and is one of the highest Megapixel Sensors in the full frame line up of cameras across different brands.
I bought this for my professional photography work, was it worth it? Or does it disappoint? Well in this video I give you my experience with the camera so far.

Below average AF, plasticky fake retro metal body, but crazy expensive price. Even film simulation, which was the only reason to use fujifilm, is no longer their advantage.
I just sold my XH2 and XT3 and most of my lenses. I kept my infrared modified X-Pro 1 and the 16mm 1.4. One of the things I like to shoot are long exposure rocket launches and the time having to clean up hot spots was frustrating. Not to say to I don't get them with Canon, but its a lower amount. I really wanted to like the XH2 and it is a great camera for most people. But the small little things like this always had me choosing my Canon R. So decided I did not need to keep both systems.
Valid. As someone who only used Fujifilm for personal stuff and other brands for professional work, the reason I left Fujifilm was the size and weight didn't make sense anymore for a casual every day carry bit of kit. It's a struggle to find a body that's significantly smaller/lighter than competitor full frame options. So in a way most of their line up has has all the negatives of full frame and all the negatives of aps-c. I mean the a7CII with the Zeiss 35f2.8 is about the size of the X100VI, which is mind boggling. If they could get that value proposition right and have a few more cameras aimed at the casual carry market then I can see myself recommending them for at least personal photography. So far it seems like they have bottled both sides of the fence.
That's a really good point and something I didn't mention in the video. I totally agree, thanks for sharing!! 👍🏻👊🏻
Brilliant music video
Much appreciated, thank you! 🙏
Why do i use a fuji GFX 100s ii ...102mps 😂don't forget the 2...if it was 99 mps ..yeah nah lol. I like image quality I can afford it I sell work and have done well with it The new 100s ii is amazing GFX.... I loved my XT5 but missed dynamic range The GFX 100s ii is bloody amazing 😮 The dreamy meduim format makes me drool 🤤 People that say megapixels donr matter 🙄.....yeah they haven't used one It's more challenging to use ...the more mps means the camera needs more challenges.
Wow yeah that’s next level 🥹👌🏻 I’d love to have a play around with the gfx medium format system! Awesome stuff thanks for sharing. 🙏
You're like little Ricky Gervais ;)
I’ll take that 😂🙏👌🏻
Im still debating between a Sony A7 IV and a Sony A7R IV
If you want video and photography go for the A7iV… if your more focused on photography, go for the A7riv (cheaper to) 🙃🙏
@@BenjahMedia isnt the A7iV CONSIDERABLY cheaper, in canada its about a $1000 cheaper??
In the UK, on the secondhand market the a7riv is cheaper. I got mine on MPB, got a really good deal on it. Camera prices do vary from country to country though so it may be slightly different in Canada I’m not sure. 🤔
Oh Sony boooooo lol. More power to ya. I'm subbin
😂
I remember back in 2001, people were calling Nikon D1X 6MP was overkill and 3MP was a sweat spot. People were saying. "what's next? useless 12MP???" Also I remember so many so-called enthusiastic photographer were refusing the idea of having video function in digital cameras. 20+ years later, those perspective changed so much!
Oh wow yeah, it’s crazy how fast technology has come in such a short period of time respectively… Although I feel in recent times say the last few years camera technology seems to have peaked with only small improvements. Interesting to see where it goes aye! Thanks for sharing your experience 🙏👌🏻💪🏻
Yes, but.... To be honest I don't remember that may people saying 6MP was too many - what I remember being the thing was Digital still doesn't have the resolutions of slide film. Today, I shoot Nikon and mostly I'm using at 20+Megapixel sensor and occassionally 45Megapixel. I use the later for my landscape photography but honestly I'm not convinced it makes any difference. I use it because I have it. The files are large (I always shoot RAW). Even at 20MP I can rarely see the difference in prints and definitely can't on a screen when showing the whole image. Going back in the day it was in the 2010s that people started talking about the sensor surpassing the lens ability to resolve the detail. Even at 20MP I can see my cheaper or older lenses struggling with softness even in their sweet spot. So what does 61MP bring us - just the label? More noise? That we have fallen for the emperor's new clothes? Show me a 45MP and 61MP taken with any Sony lens and I bet if I change them around you couldn't tell the difference. Yes more than 6MP, 12MP is ok, 20MP is really good and I defy people to see an improvement on anything that isn't an A1 print, 45MP on FF (larger sites that a APC 20MP) good noise, many lenses noticeably softer at the edge, 61MP?? No improvement on A0 prints, marketing hype? worse noise?, limit buffer and frame rate, out performing the lens by a margin. I'm just not convinced but feel free to spend your own money.🤣
@@markhickson9087 Back in 2000's, high MP vs low MP was debated even more often than today because the high MP came with a heavy penalty of high ISO noise and considered as unnecessary. It is true that most professional photographers don't need high MP because they already know the type of shots they will take when they get to the job sites with their predefined template. Cropping is not really needed for them. For serious hobbyists, who take photos of everything from family, street, wild life, landscape, vacation, etc and who do not carry five lenses, cropping is a vital tool to increase their chance of taking that one golden moment that low MP would have missed. If you don't believe there is a difference in final image between 20MP and 60MP, take any shot with a small object in 20MP camera then blow it up at 300%. You will see the image become a garbage where 60MP will still resolve. Every time I see people comparing low MP vs high MP, they are blowing up a large object that already contains plenty of pixels. As I said earlier, high MP is just another tool for photographing in certain situation just like how filters, tripod, flash, etc can get you that shot that you would missed without. If you need it, then you need it. If you don't need it, then don't use it. All these conversations of low MP vs. high MP is like saying Toyota corolla is good enough and ending a sentence like that. Good enough for what and who????
I HATE the hate like if you ever compare the a9 and a1 yoiu can see the difference in resolution....... if you want high end resolution yes theres a difference this isnt samsung grain of sand size 600 megapixel cameras
Thanks for sharing your perspective. 🙃
😊
🙃
The only Fuji camera I wish to own is the X-T5 and that’s just for hobby street photography and short video clips if I need to. If I wanted a camera for any professional or serious content creation I would choose either a full frame Sony or Canon.
😊👊🏻👌🏻
I think you're just a bad professional if fuji isn't cutting it for you lol
Did you watch the all the video? There are quite a few deal breaking issues that my Fuji cameras have.. ie Hot pixels and dead pixels 😩 Thanks for commenting 🙃
I think fuji fanboys should stop gatekeeping their cameras and keep pointing out the obvious issues, so fujifilm actually do something about it.
For my professional photography work, I just use single point focus, I would never buy a camera just because it does have amazing autofocus. I think people rely a lot on technology
Thanks for sharing your experience dude 💪🏻 and absolutely there are many factors one should consider when choosing a camera!!👌🏻
Just recently move to Sony too. I’ve got issue with AF and focus peaking (when use with manual lens) even it already show to be focusing. However the fuji color and tone is amazing. Hope they could solve the focus issue soon 😢
Totally agree! 👊🏻
Autofocus is the main reason I switched from Fuji, I had the xt4 & it was jus too many misses for me
Oh interesting, I'm not alone then LOL. What camera system did you go over to in the end? 👊🏻
@@BenjahMedia Canon r6ii
Nice!!!
If you wanted to shoot mostly video, you needed the X-H2s. I've never had "dead pixels" on my X-T5 or my X-H2s. Only an occasionally dirty sensor. Anyway, have fun with the boring Sony! ;) JK mate, whatever works for you is what you should use!
😂 haha thank you and yeah no bells and whistles to play around with on the Sony, but all good so far, seems to be more reliable. Ideally I did want the xt5 for both video and photography, just those annoying hot pixels started showing up 🙄 Thanks for your comment 👊🏻
thank you Benja for the video. Interesting I had a somewhat similar experience for different reasons. I have been a street photographer for years before it become popular. I still own 7 older fuji cameras including the x100f and x1--v for the street the others with vintage lenses I like for b&w. I purchased these cameras on a preorder basis before all of there overhyped stuff (ridiculous). I loved my Fuji's for the street however the autofocus was lacking. I did not have the pinpoint accuracy for the street and the images 40% of the time lacked the clarity I needed especially when shooting from the hip. I then decided about over 1 year after purchasing the x100v to try the Sony A7c. Only a little larger than the Fuji with very comfortable ergonomics and WOW. The autofocus was pot on, images crisp and sharp with great dynamic range imho superior to Fuji. Paired with the terrific and very small 40mm f2.5g lens and the very underrated and tiny 28-60 f4 for the street I was blown away. I had after purchasing this when the new X100vi came out had preordered early. After a couple of days, I realized that it is my "wishful thinking" is why I ordered the camera. Cancelled it and purchased a second Sony A7c II. This is comparable to the Sony a7IV in many ways. Now when traveling I have my two sonys and a couple of lenses and couldn't be happier. It is really really sad Fuji is not stepping up to the plate with their autofcous - cheers
Great comment, thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve come to very similar conclusions and yeah sometimes you just gotta go with what works best for you. I almost forget about the A7c cameras, but I can see them making a great little street photography set up. And on the plus side you’ve still got your Fuji cameras there as and when you want to mess around with them aye. 🙏👌🏻👊🏻
Do the dead pixels appear after the camera gets warm? I own an XH1 and the XT3 and I never noticed a dead pixel. I'm not looking for them, but I use magnification while focusing, so I guess I would probably notice it. I understand your position. I own a Fuji system, an old Nikon apsc system and a Canon full frame system, so I can combine based on my needs, but I can't see myself selling the Fujis, without buying new ones. Actually I'm planning to buy an old Xpro1 for 400 euro. :)
Yeah it seems to show those pixels if I shoot anything more a few minutes so quite likely. Ooo nice sounds good! I must admit the xpro series looks so fun, love that it shows the film sim on the back 👌🏻👌🏻 Thanks for sharing 💪🏻
The autofocus is much better with Sony/Canon/Nikon, these models are better suited for professional work. As a hobby photographer, the autofocus of my old XT-2 is really sufficient for me, although I rarely film videos. For me, the advantage of my Fuji is its more compact dimensions with lenses and overall lower purchase cost.
Absolutely agree, thanks for sharing your experience! I can’t lie I would love an xt1 or xt2 just to play around with or take when I go travelling! 👌🏻👊🏻
A6400 is smaller no ?
@@JJARCHIE the 6400 is smaller this was the reason why i choose the xt2. I hold the fuji in my hand and bought it…
@@locker1964 you said " the advantage of my Fuji is its more compact dimensions with lenses and overall lower purchase cost. " so now the xt2 was bought because it was bigger ?
Probably my second favorite Fuji lens. I threw it on the X-T5 and it has been amazing no lie.
It’s crazy how small it is yet has such a high quality image! Thanks for sharing your experience. 👌🏻💪🏻
It's true. Autofocus is an issue. I own the X-H2. Took it once for a professional job and now I use it for stock photography and personal use.
Nice, doesn’t the xh2 have 8k recording? Or am I going mad 😂 Yeah it’s a shame, you can get some great results with Fuji, however they aren’t reliable for pro work in my experience 🥹 Thanks for sharing.
I still use the 16mp XE1 for pro work and have no issues with my images or clients whatsoever. My cheapest prints starts at 800euros. I've done everything from big prints in fineart galleries to magazine and vinylrecord covers to book covers.

The a6700 has faster af , uncropped 4k60 , better rolling shutter at half ( 30 vs 15 , xt3 has 20 ) Fx30 has that but lost out a bit on the faster af , but has xlr support and a built in fan
Thanks for the heads up!
Auto focus is must for me, Fuji is mainly for amateurs to be honest.

@@Nightshade1881 Fuji cameras are play toys really 🤔
Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm still waiting for the market to settle, to decide my migration to mirrorless. I'll wait until next year. Fuji was one alternative, but the reliability thing and the price / performance ratio was not right. There are reasons why pro photographers mostly use Canon and Sony and some Nikon now.
Very wise indeed, I wish I had your patience! 😂 all the best with your camera journey!
My friend also switched from X-T5 to Sony but A7RV I considering switching from my X-T3 too, but idk to what camera, leaning towards Lumix S5II x, since they finally got phase AF, and I don't have a budget sadly :(
Oh nice, yeah cameras are quite expensive you wanna make sure when your spending all that money you get the right camera for you. The s5ii x is definitely a cheaper option but it’s a L mount system and L mount lenses are quite pricey. I wish the best on your camera endeavours 😊👊🏻

Sounds like you need to buy a sensor cleaning kit and make sure you dont have any dust inside it. That might remove the spot on your videos.
Unfortunately I’ve tried that 🥹 thanks for the tip though, much appreciated! 💪🏻
Dust on the sensor results in a grey blob on the image, totally different problem
i bought an XT-3 for pennies and I love it. its got actual sensor damage but I print a photo once every few months - like if I love the shot that much I’m ok with doing a few touch ups. I also mostly take photos of interesting rocks so I can live with the autofocus though sometimes it also drives me nuts. sometimes something exciting is happening and Id rather have captured the shot even if it is blurry but it wont snap if the focus isnt locked and that drives me bananas
That’s awesome, I’ve been meaning to get some of my work printed myself! Any good websites let me know 🤙👊🏻 I’ve shot some great work with my Fuji cameras, but yeah your right, it does take a little more work than some other brands… Thanks for sharing 😊
I agree, I'm in the same position, but I'm interested in the nikon z9...I've always been a nikon guy but loved the look of fuji. Also on the fuji xt4 the buffer stops at 9 shots in raw and slowes down where I miss the shot entirely. The focus is a big issue also...
It’s a shame that fuji just seem to miss the mark when it comes to reliability.… Ohh nice, one of my buddies shoots Nikon,I actually managed to have a look at the z6 iii up close recently and I was quite impressed. I think, don’t quote me on this but I heard Nikon have merged with RED cameras recently, so that’s exciting for video specs if true. Thanks for your comment 👍🏻
Z6111 also a great camera, it's totally sold out for weeks everywhere. Yeah they bought RED, great move by nikon. Will still use my small fuji cameras and retro lenses for travel. So light, stylish, fun to shoot. But for pro jobs, they can miss focus and slow down on ya...😊
Absolutely 👊🏻

Very cool indeed!!
Considering upgrading from my very solid and reliable X-T2 / X-E3 combo. I like to change brands once and a while, but it can be a bit of hassle. Will continue to follow your channel to see how your new experience with Sony goes. Congrats!
Oh nice, the xt2 has a very nice sensor! Glad your not having any troubles like me with yours… I totally agree, I’ve been putting it off for a while now but needs to be done haha. Appreciate that my friend and many more videos to come 🙃🙏
For video work Sony FX30 is the most affordable right now in the market, 10bit 4:2:2 4k120 with dual card slot, but if you want FF go for a7S3, ZV E-1 is cheaper but it has some issues with overheating. There is something of a sony color that makes it more "dramatic and cinematic" you will love it. you should try to sell your XT4 too imo, there is no need to hold on to Fuji's camera, Sony color is great if you know how to grade its footage/raw. The only thing that I think fuji do better (aside from all of your opinion) is it retain much better highlight compare to sony, I'm been using a74 for awhile now but the highlight is not that good, its not clipping its just not as good as fuji, the shadow is much better tho.
Ahh thank you 🙏 that’s super helpful! I don’t mind grading log so the whole colour science thing doesn’t worry me so much. I did think about the fx30, only draw back for me is the sensor size, however I’m not ruling it out completely. 💪🏻👌🏻
For photography Nikon it's the best for recovering highlights. And Sony it's the best for recovering the shadows. That vary model to model, but as a general rule is accurate that Nikon is great to recover highlights in raw photo. I don't know about video.
@@BenjahMediafx30 does 4k60 10bit 422 from a full crop with 15ms of rolling shutter. The XH2S and XS20 have nice video output... 🤔
@@amermeleitor super nice! I think the argument is the lens selection / the way stabilization works is way less ideal for video. At least in my case with an XT-4/16-55. The difference with a Sony and their 24-70 is tremendous. No breathing on the corners of the frame as you zoom, significantly closer to parfocal, smoother stabilization for video. Fuji stabilization is super jumpy for video. Might be better on the newer ones

Should I be using autofocus with continuous shooting when I’m trying to capture things like maybe people running, playing volleyball, or just doing motions where I I want to capture almost every bit of something let’s say a man twirling his date in a dress. Would I use auto focus with continuous shooting then?
You’ll have to have a play around with it, so many variables when it comes to this sort of thing. In general if your not confident with manual focusing, the xt4s autofocus isn’t that bad for most normal applications like you mentioned! Personally I wouldn’t rely on it but there are loads of settings to customise how your autofocus responds to different situations. Sorry not the most clear answer but yeah it just depends lol. I prefer the 23mm purely because of the 1.4 aperture. As far as image quality I mean that’s totally subjective, but both quality lenses. 🙂

It’s usually fine with a shotgun mic and if your not moving around a great deal it doesn’t get too loud. Best results though is just set it up manually if you can 👌🏻
