@@TheChampCave it was a wild ride!
Very nice video. I’ll be doing that hike in a few days, unfortunately the cable car will be closed and my main goal is to get to Refugio Toni Demetz which is in the middle of two giant peaks. Do you know if by following this same route I can get to it?
Oh that is a different hike, where you hike up the switchbacks. You can access it from the same parking lot (Hotel Passo Sella). Here is a trail map: alltrails.pxf.io/rifugio-toni-demetz
I am from Germany, and have visited the Dolomites since the 1960s. For decades there were no American, Chinese, or Russian tourists . The region literally was only known to German or Austrian visitors, especially the German-speaking regions.. The South Tyrol region really has changed negatively since the influx of all these other tourists! Now EVERYONE is crowding this beautiful region, and it is just not the same idyllic place anymore!
It is very true, and unfortunately that is happening everywhere. We have to do our best to find the hidden gems wherever they are. What a gift that you have been visiting such a beautiful part of the world since the 60s!
If I am after better views and shorter hike in Sassolungo, is it better to do counter clockwise or clockwise to the first Refugio ? I hope they are still open since we will be there mid- Oct. Thanks.
I would go clockwise to Rifugio Frederich Auguste and even hike a little past that point and you'll get lovely views. The best part is the views are already there when you start at Hotel Passo Sella.
Bon. I'm not so convinced. Don't take me wrong - I love the Dolomites. But just 5 days - nope. I spent years to discover these mountains, and yet I haven't seen it all. The most interesting parts are the East, the South-East and the South of this mountain range, where it becomes really wild and remote. There is still quite good accommodation, but significantly less tourist tweaks. There you are really on your own just with your hiking boots.
You could easily spend a lifetime exploring and not see it all, but I know a lot of people only have the chance to experience the magic in just a few days. It is such a magical place.
Thank you, I’m doing the walk in 5 weeks with Ultimate Hiked. Your energy and love for the time spent gave me courage
Oh I'm so happy to hear this! You are going to have an amazing time. It is an incredible place and an honor to share my energy with hikers like you.

I'm so happy to hear this and glad to hear that the packing guide is helpful for your planning. You are going to have an incredible time!
We have a Rainbow Mountain here in New Zealand as well! In the North Island, a few miles south of Rotorua. It's a small mountain and very fun to climb. At the summit is a lookout, plus 360° views of the surrounding countryside.
@@GypsyGirl317 oh I will have to explore that on my next visit! I did the Tongariro Crossing which was a joy! What is the mountain called?
@@ExploreThisShow the name is Rainbow Mountain, now known by the Maori name Kakaramea. There's also Mt Tauhara, near Taupo. Tongariro Crossing is excellent isn't it! Tongariro Northern Circuit is on my bucket list too. Happy tramping! 😁
@@GypsyGirl317 amazing! I’ll add these to my ever growing list. I love how the names are now known by Māori language, like Piopiotahi for Milford. Happy tramping to you too!
As a Kiwi tramper I'm really enjoying your channel, which I have only just discovered as a result of popping "NZ Tramping" in the search bar. Your enthusiasm is infectious, and your delight in the experience matches mine! Isn't it exhilarating walking tenaciously through the tough stuff and coming back out into the sunshine! Or to a hot drink and a warm hut! 😅 I'm enjoying the thoughtfulness in your commentary, and your videography is stunning. @@juliarichmond5904 it is so worth it to go further. You will love it! So we were there in early September. Magnificent time! We also rented a car from Venice and did a road trip up to the Dolomites.

I would also check out the Routeburn Track. I did that back to back with the Milford and it was incredible. ua-cam.com/video/jwcMXu84EhA/v-deo.html
What time of year is this
This was in mid-December, which is the peak season in NZ to do this as it is summer time there.
How much training did you Do if any?
I live in the mountains and hike a lot, and I would definitely recommend training, mainly for day 2 with the elevation gain. Working on endurance and lower body and core strength is really helpful to make for a more enjoyable experience (and also better stamina if you had weather like I did)!
