Melbourne 1975
Some photos I took of Melbourne and Port Melbourne in 1975.
At 1:34 some images of a Labor party rally with Gough Whitlam in the old city square. This was the lead up the 1975 election caused by the dismissal of Whitlam's government.

The view down Toorak Rd from Chapel St was pre the 50's. More like late 30's to me!
His not so tuff now allan.😅
Gloria, such a vindictive, malignant old queen.
Everyone's talking about the Jones boy the song says lol we sure are Al an were all saying lock that fucker up
" beware predator !"
Alan Jones should be ashamed of himself. He thinks he’s Mr wonderful. He’s far from that.

Allen's father would have died of shame knowing who Allen really is, he would be rolling in his grave, someone get a chalf bag ready
Oh Alan, who's a naughty boy then? Yep, it's you ya kiddy fiddler...
Media hyping one of their own. Nobody gives a stuff about this obnoxious, big mouthed nobody.
18:52 James Black…..
18 November 2024. Alan Jones has been arrested for historical indecent sexual assault against men.
I wonder if he’ll have full support of the Australian public.
I hope Australia changes its flag while Howard is still alive.
Australia stabbed Gough in the back
Showing the heady days of Melbourne in the 70's. Love seeing the cars and fashion. The Whitlam shots bought back so many memories. It was TIME and he did so much good for Australia. You left the Public Service to take up free Uni offer to become a full time photographer. Best thing you ever did, Love your work Peter. Always have.
OMG those shots of Helen are D I V I N E I had forgotten how beautiful she was and remember seeing those photos not long after you took them.
Mohawk in Moreland high I went there 1970
Beautiful B&W shots and soundtrack 🙏🏽
Thank you.
The dead oldies channel
What a pleasant comment. Thanks so much.
1:19 My grandfather used to work on the docks back in those days. 2:34 and 2:44 Looking at those two pics and thinking about my Mum and her siblings, who were getting around the city as young kids in those days. Going to the pictures on a Saturday afternoon, stopping along the way to buy a bag of broken biscuits to eat while they watch the pictures and then getting an ice cream on the way home.
What lovely memories.
When they talk about a 43 day campaign. And Malcolm Turnbull called an eight week in 2016. Man was psycho
Do you have any question times from 2006? like with Kim Beazley? No worries if not.
It was WorkChoices that was the Howard Government's undoing! The working class simply rose up against John Howard.
Born 1947, I remember it well. Great idea putting that soundtrack together for audio background. So many memories. Someone mention’s air conditioning - we didn’t even have heaters in our car back then. They were for wimps when they came in! 😂
Lucky to have a car
I can't believe I watched it all the way through. In particular, the cigarette ads were so transparent. Fancy trying to get people to feel that if you sucked poisonous fumes into your lungs you would be counted among the cool, "forward thinking", liberated, athletic, beautiful people. Some items e.g. cars were touted as to how much better they were as regards this feature and that feature, unlike today where they promote the idea of how you will supposedly feel as others see you drive by and wish they were like you.
Yeah the lying coward the highest taxing treasurer and the highest taxing pm in modern political history including Gough, what a lying coward an a disaster for Australians. The economy stagnates when the religious right wing are in power they are so incompetent it is staggering. Look at the F35 years over due and billions over budget then the Snowy 2.0 haha what a disaster then the subs haha train reck the level of incompetence is staggering
A very nice compilation. 2 caption corrections: 3:04 "Toorak Rd 1950" the vehicles are not 1950s , they are from an earlier era, probably 1920s - 30s. At 1:47 "Men cross road in Edwardian suits" the men are wearing typical suits of the 1950s, not Edwardian suits (which date back to the 1910s.)
Well I highly doubt that everyone, or most people, were driving only 5-10 year old cars in 1950. Remembering that it was only 4-5 years after the end of WW2.
@@mebeme007 that's possible ... but it is odd that this is a main road in a city, and there is not a single car in this pic produced after 1940, though the Holden went into production in 1948. Compare the earlier "Bridge St Richmond 1950" photo at 0:51. The majority of the cars in the problematic "Toorak Rd 1950" pic have roll-top hoods, which places their manufacture squarely in the 1920s, making them at least 20 or 30 years old if the given date is correct. Whereas, in the "Richmond 1950 " pic, at least half the cars are made post-war, and there is not a roll-top hood to be seen. It's also odd that the female pedestrian is wearing a silhouette which was on trend for the 1920s but not for the 1950s; and the man standing is wearing a hat which is taller than the fashionable height for 1950 (but normal for the1920s - compare 1950's mens' hats and womens' fashions in the preceding photo 2:34 called "Swanston St...1955"). Then there are the 2 petrol bowsers located right on the kerb - a placement which is on point for the 1920s. But the biggest red flag is the huge pile of horse dung next to the bowsers, which has been swept off the carriageway. (Not to mention the 3 horse-drawn vehicles in this pic.)That is a lot of manure for 1950; I doubt that any street sweeping was still being done, or even needed, by that date. In short, when a street photo shows not a single item which would have been contemporary with the date given, it's usually been misdated. Misdating is rife with historical photos, even in the present day. For example Getty Images, which uploads shots taken by photographic journalists every day, routinely has date errors.
It would seem you’re being overly picky here. I was born in 1940 so I grew up through that era and I can tell you there were plenty of vehicles dating back to the 20 and 30s being driven in 1950.
Hewson couldn't handle the press...not handling the 4th Estate was his biggest downfall.
this was very entertaining and I love giraffes
Don't we all.
This was great information for my class. Cheers.
Thank you so much for that. I'm glad it helped in some way.
so amazing! but i am shocked by that women
If you mean the lady at the start I asked her to say that as a joke. Thanks for your comment.
Left: Accept Afghan refugees we must help them from the taliban. Also left: How dare you beat the taliban?! Same with Iraq too, helping a muslim nation? Na! We like dictatorship. @#£%ing hell give me a break.
As many as fellow Australians 🇦🇺 thank you John Howard one of our greatest sons.
I do not get it, this is what Australians complain about? Oh no unions are being targetted! Yes, you should not be forced into a union to get a job and especially to give up your dues yes unions can become special interests and yes unions can definitely harm the economic life of the country and thus the people and those very workers. What? University funding is cut in favour of student participation? Yeah, New Labour did it in the United-Kingdom of Great-Britain and Northern-Ireland because free provision was not actually helping poor students, the payed system does in fact and has improved per head funding. As for the Aboriginal kids thing, so intervention when the Northern Territory is not doing enough is bad? The @#£%?! Sorry but the same people who are saying that under 7 years of Labour nothing was being done and that for over 17 years the Northern-Territory was not doing enough complain when the Federal Government helps stop kids being abused and parents becoming alcoholic? You crazy?! Also John Winston Howard gave advice to the Treasurer during the covid-19 pandemic wherein an emergency brooks no ideological constraints. He was, in some areas, a pragmatist. Also did he or did he not decrease government-spending?
Such a left wing documentary, you only have to look at Canada right now to see how government intervention causes problems, but near the end of this they try telling us that people aren't responsible enough so government has to tell people how much they can borrow & how to value their home, what? most home sellers trust their real estate agents to say how valuable a home is, it's up to people to decide if the offer they get is worth it, that results in bartering and negotiations, if you need government to tell you how to spend your money you're lost. Prices go up because we entertain it, then complain that the government should do something - instead of looking for better options.
Little 14 minute media watch treat at the end was a nice blast from the past
Little John was a little man, with a little plan. And a terrible human.
How? He won four elections anyway.
Sadly there are those who say he was the best Prime Minister Australia has ever had
My fiancée is a Cogger. Thank you for the info
Hi Louise where do you live? He maybe able to add to our information on the family.
Fred Chaney to Peacocks right after taking down Howard, in gold we trust
A sad day for Australia.
Hewson will be remembered warmly for excellent policy and political courage.
Warmly remembered years.
Oh the highest taxing treasurer and the highest taxing pm you were happy to be lied to up hill and down dale what a guy hey at least under labor you paid less tax
All these years later and climate change policy in Australia has progressed so little 😢
Miss Barry
A great day
