Atheist - An Incarnation's Dream (1990 demo version, Bass Cover)
It's been a minute since I did one of these, and I went with an impulsive choice that was a song I happened to really be feeling as of late - this is the 1990 demo version of An Incarnation's Dream, featuring the bass mastery of Roger Patterson. It all really speaks for itself, it's no secret this is what I love, but there are a lot of great things worth mentioning.
I've never seen anyone cover or transcribe this amazing version of the song, I never even thought I'd be able to do it, (very few cover this tune to begin with), so I decided upon myself that I'd try to learn it as accurately as possible in order to create the most faithful (and only) cover the internet has seen. It's impossible to do what Roger did, and the closest there will ever be to that is Tony Choy's phenomenal work on the final version of Unquestionable Presence from 1991, but this is my personal take on Roger's lines.
It'd be impossible to bring up my favorite parts of this song to play and listen to, so I'm just going to list a few. Right off the bat there's the root-fifth-octave arpeggios on every tremolo in the main riff. Those really complete that part for me, so I had to include it. It's very Steve Harris like and gives the riff a certain bounce and groove. The breakdown at 1:20 is iconic and the tone is the absolute fattest thing on the planet. Pops out so well yet has a massive low end. At 1:36 there's an awesome natural harmonic included that I tried hard to really articulate (as I did every other note, but that thing really pops out). At 2:28, there's also an insane octave jump that is only done once in that riff, it's such a cool addition. All of these details I really tried to play with such an attention to the musicality and detail as Roger did. There's too many for me to truly make a comprehensive list. It's all amazing. No playing and tone was ever as articulate as his.
Anyways, enough of my rambling, as I said before, it all speaks for itself. The best!

Possessed - The Heretic (Bass Cover)

It's been a couple years since I tackled some Possessed, but as they're in my favorite tuning (E standard), and a huge influence to my songwriting, I should definitely do it more 😂 I think this is damn near my favorite song of theirs! Beyond the Gates is definitely my favorite album too. Something about it is just extra intense, fast, dark, and twisted! It's everything I love about Possessed. R...

Figured I'd finally do another one of these. This one has been covered by others a bit more often than other songs I've tackled have, but I thought it was worth a shot to get in a different bassist and artist that you don't always see me play - Alex Webster of Cannibal Corpse. There's some details a lot of covers tend to be missing I think, such as the ascending root, harmony, octave, harmony p...

A quick one I did because I felt like it'd be really fun. A tune I really love from a record that I dig a lot more than some people do. In fact, this is one of my favorite songs from them. So intense, dark, and ripping. Like much of this album, which is their first in C# tuning and I really love that sound for them. It's funny because I was just listening to Atheist's Elements today, another re...

A sneak peak of what I've been learning, Beginning of Sorrow by Suffocation! The part where I stop in this video is as far as I know in the song, and I know every part leading up to this (meaning I've got down about 3/4 or so of the song), but I just wanted to highlight this section because of the part that begins 22 seconds into this video. Getting back into my usual playthrough videos since I'm back home after almost 50 days! Thought I'd finally do a full cover of a Suffocation tune. Different kind of technical from my usual pace with Atheist, Sadus, etc. I was considering doing a tune from Breeding the Spawn, my favorite album, but I happened to already ...

It's been a huuuge while since I've covered any Atheist. In fact, last time I did, it was way before I even tried overlaying the track over the video audio and listening with headphones. That helped make these things get much tighter. Anyways, I figured I'd do one again because there is something irresistible about Roger's playing. He is my favorite bassist ever, and he has a couple things that...

About time I did some more from one of my very favorite "pure" thrash metal bands. I'd done this song before aaaages ago. In my pre-Facebook days 😆. This version of the song has an extended bass intro, just a couple of licks, but to me, they're so catchy and just...

A super short one that is bound to probably confuse both purists who don't want this played on a fretless and with small added licks, as well as those who want to see me play technical stuff. Haha. I suppose it's a risky concept. I learned this song a few days ago, only ever tried it on this fretless. Here's another fretless reimagining that I decided to do today. And yes, the original was not recorded on a fretless, contrary to urban legend. In fact, most of the music on the first three Sadus albums was recorded on fretted bass. The only fretless part to my knowledge is the bass solo in "Echoes of Forever". All of my dorky fact sharing aside, I thought it would be sick to give this one anot...

I figured for my first ever post featuring me using fretless bass, I'd take a song that was originally recorded on fretted bass and make it (somewhat) my own with the sound that I am slowly developing on fretless bass. I just had to do another one from Human. I don't think I need to explain further why I find Human to have the best bass work in Death's catalog, as well as why it is my favorite Death album of all. It's just simply off the charts. I ended up playing this one a bit raw, but I suppose it fits this very raw (in energy) song. Admittedly, I don't use any fancy gear. It's mostly very budget stuff. And I don't use any pedals, just straight through the amp. For most of these videos I'm using an Orange combo amp. I'd totally do a gear showcase if you'd like though. Around 1:16 I'm doing a kind of strum of a power chord with my nails, people may refer to it as a "flamenco" style strum. You have to flick your fingers across the three strings.
