Exploring the Leaf Litter: Backyard BioBlitz Ep2
Join me for episode 2 of the Backyard BioBlitz as we continue exploring the incredible diversity of life right outside our door! Starting with eight species from the previous episode, we uncover even more fascinating finds in the leaf litter and logs of Alabama.
Highlights include:
A Webster salamander, an adorable amphibian hiding under the leaves.
A pretty pink millipede and a speedy ground beetle.
The tiny lip tooth snail, covered in bristly hairs and rarely observed in the wild.
A pine cone snail, only a few millimeters wide and easy to overlook.
A charming jumping spider with big, expressive eyes.
By slowing down and carefully sifting through the forest floor, we discover hidden creatures and learn about their unique features and behaviors. From beetles to snails, this journey highlights the incredible biodiversity of our backyard.
Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more exciting episodes of the Backyard BioBlitz! Who knows what we’ll find next?

    No way sea silk is connected to the golden fleece legend. Sheeps hides were used in the ancient Colchida and in Georgia up to XIX century to gather gold sand from streamy mountain rivers there. Locals just put hides onto the stream bed for a month or two and then took it with gold sand entangled in fleece.

    Hi while searching for a bit of rather obscure and odd information I came across your channel. Would you be willing to speculate on how a slug would act in zero gravity? If say it was in a jar on the international space station how it would function or move around.

    • @TheNaturalistProject
      @TheNaturalistProject 7 місяців тому

      Haha alright I can try. I’d imagine a slug could deal with zero gravity quite well. Their large foot is like a suction cup that lets them climb up, down, and even upside down on surfaces in gravity so I think they could cope with no gravity and move around fine. The challenge would come if they fall off a wall and are floating in open air in zero Gs. In this situation I think they would elongate their body as much as possible and move their head up, down, and side to side looking for a surface to grab on to.

    • @LoneWolfsVoice
      @LoneWolfsVoice 7 місяців тому

      @SeahorseandCo That is about ten times more info than I have been able to find up until now. Thank you. I'm writing a fantasy novel, and one of the races in it are essentially slug centaurs.

      No, I didn’t find any tiger salamanders on this hike. The spotted salamanders and marbled salamanders are closely related to tiger salamanders though as they are all mole salamanders!
