Husker Doc Talk Podcast : Episode 38 : John Butler Takes Over The Defense
Episode 38 of the Husker Doc Talk Podcast dives into a packed agenda, highlighting some of the biggest headlines in Nebraska football and the broader college football landscape. Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatechka kick things off by dissecting Nebraska’s decision to promote John Butler to Defensive Coordinator. They analyze what this move means for the program, the defense's future direction, and Butler’s potential to elevate the Blackshirts in the ever-competitive Big Ten.
Next, they tackle the Transfer Portal frenzy, exploring its implications for Nebraska and how the Huskers can strategically navigate this new era of college football. With the 2025 Nebraska football schedule recently announced, Travis and Dr. Rob offer their insights on key matchups, challenges ahead, and how the team is shaping up for the seasons to come.
But the conversation doesn’t stop in Lincoln. The duo focuses on the somewhat shocking news of Bill Belichick’s move to North Carolina, discussing how his NFL expertise might translate to the college game and what this means for a sport already during other coaching changes. They also take a broader look at coaching shakeups nationwide and how these moves reshape the competitive landscape.

Doc's Diagnosis : A Look To Next Week Against Rutgers
Hey Travis n dr Rob. U guys do a fantastic show. Thank you, Merry Christmas!!
Portal opens 1st week of may. That’s it. Make kids go to school a whole academic calendar year
I wish Travis wasn't such a narcissus. Hitting the mute button waiting for him to shut up is annoying....but very necessary. RZ rocks!
WTH is he even talking about
I agree with your son. Jeanty should have won it. There has not been a player like that since Barry.
Feedback on the podcast - take it for what it is worth - I have watched 6 or so of your podcasts and the thing I find annoying is how long it takes to start covering actual content - I think the personal back and forth banter about things not revelavant to the podcast on personal things gets to lengthy. I watch Carriker, Sean, Sipp, Locked In, Corn Crazed, Johnson and a few others and all get right to the content and stay focused on the content. I am 58 and grew up in Omaha and went to Millard North. You both are great guys...that is just my feedback as if I am going to invest a hour of my time I want a LOT of pertinent and to the point commentary. I may be the only one who thinks this and if so, disregard and this post was not made to be negative but to just let you know my perspective in where I invest my time in watching the many podcast options out there
They got right into today.
Is Belichek's girlfriend enrolled at UNC??
Went full electric too. No smell of gas in the garage.
Watch for a Ferentz to end up at NCU. Brian, Steven, or James all 3 have connections with B.B.
How many of our new players can play in the bowl game????
Bobby Petrino was the coach you guys were thinking of from Arkansas and Louisville.
I think bad boy mowers is the old Dixon mowers pretty sure they only make zero tuns
Rob UCLA bitch slapped us. They were playing through the whistle pushing us around.
Howdy guys
Good afternoon fellas
Travis and Rob, I took advantage of the 50% off Gdefy. Just got them today. Great looking, quality shoes. I’m still breaking them, but very comfortable.
I've been a Husker fan since 1952 and I've never stopped pulling for them but after hearing "Dr. Rob" declare that NU was never going to be a place that could be turned around because of the weather and the fact that NU was just a "middle of the road land grant school" I think maybe it is time fort me to stop caring. Thank you Dr. Rob!!
None of the coaches leaving is a big deal. They all have nearly zero experience in power 4 at their coaching positions before coming to nebraska. We have the opportunity now to get better coaches that have experience in the NFL as well as power 2 (SEC and Big Ten)
Liked the podcast but have to say I have a nice greater appreciation of all that Owen does for the podcast.
The New York Alumni association is pretty killer. Went to the Rutgers game a few years back and the Alumni had a great friday night event. Was a blast, we took over a whole bar. Hope they'll do the same. Sucks Scott Frost didn't work here for whatever reason. I want ever Nebraskan to succeed.
I have watched Boise all year long as Ashton is a once in a generation talent. They are a better team than most people give them credit, they only lost to Oregon due to mistakes they made not because Oregon out played them. They are in the easier half of the bracket.
With the 50% off offer, I decided to get my CNA wife a pair of G-Defy shoes for Christmas. I hope she likes them as much as you guys do.
Rob when I moved to sec country way back when it was the big 8 all I ever heard was its not as good of a conference, we beat each other up, blah blah blah. My response was always we still played the best and won.
You can't treat some 3 loss (with a big name) better than another team that has a less big name but less losses different.
Not many NU fans going to Da Bronx
Boston College? Really? At least we get some extra practices.
Hook em 🤘🏾
Texas😂
@bubbaifly Yeah. That college football playoff team....again. 🤣
Good, good Takes. Distraction, Distracted, To Distract. Focus! Lock in! Get the W!!! Think About What All Can Happen this Next Play! Be Ready for All of them! That is So Elementary! One of the 1st things Taught in Sports. Along with show good sportsmanship.
Expand it all you want, the big boys will own this, teams with the Jimmy and Joe's, will ultimately win. A TCU can win A game, but just can't sustain for 3, 4, 5? games.
What nobody is talking about is that IF you seeded everything this year, the top 4 seeds get a bye (and I’m happy with that). But this year if that happened, and those 4 teams win their quarterfinal, we would have to watch Big Ten and SEC conf championship repeats. I wouldn’t want to see that.
Doc Rob needs to take a breath.
What a great show fellas, from a Mark Farley fan and a Hawkeye graduate
There is a big difference between a top five team and a 15 to 20 ranked team. I don’t think we need a 24 team playoff. That is a lot of useless games where the games will never produce a champion. Plus we will be playing football until April.
Nebraska has not lost anything of value. This team is 6-6, everyone in Lincoln currently has lost more times than they've won. Born losers across the board, including Tony White and Knightons fat ass.
I hope ND gets knocked out right away, they are a joke as an independent join a conference you jokers. Hey Doc and Travis you guys have the BEST Pod Cast keep the great job a coming every time on the air.
This could happen with a CFP division with the right amount of dollars. I see it happening soon.
Way to complicated guys.
Travis can you let me know when we will hear who the Huskers will play in a bowl game , as where and who we will play thank you very much.
ND played Army & Navy and lost to Northern Illinois
At one time, there were 2 polls AP & the Coaches poll(UP?).
Polls
Good show as always
It doesn't matter how many teams you have, there will alway be teams left out that will say they should be included than one included, like Ala than SMU.
Alabama out good
Boston College who cares.
I do. We are part of bowl season. It’s been 84 years…
Oh…… poor ND can’t get a buy! 😂 they been playing the system for a fool for far too long! Want a buy, pick a damn conference!
I question why they are even in.. id take Bama over them
@ F Bama! 2 losses to 6-6 conference opponents doesn’t get you IN!
Im not a bama fan at all.. they had 2 laughable losses..and i laughed..but they did beat 2 playoff teams.. ND had a much softer schedule
@ I never said ND deserved to be in….. I’m just saying their replacement isn’t Bama.
The eye test is simply a reason to confirm your preconceived biases.
Much better look Doc.
Love listening to you guys.
Nebraska needs to go back to recruiting the players that are developmental, not 5-star players. "back in the day" they ignored the blue chip players because of the attitude--they thought they were good and didn't need to work; Nebraska recruits were hungry, they knew they weren't stars so had to work for playing time, thus they became All-Americans. That attitude meant they hit hard, played hard, played the whole 4-quarters, they didn't expect anything. Let's go back to those days.
Listen Doc number one iowa don't need to get over their selves because they're not concieted like Nebraska so you get over yourself
God doesn’t care where a person prays as long as they pray!
