    You could put a small copper coil in each square are power them, and then you put one in each piece and wire it to an led. And make a system so when you place a piece on the board the square lights up brighter

    Crazy additional idea to help beginners, but make it so each space pushes down just a bit, add something that detects different kind of pieces, and then have the spaces it can move from where it is, light up when the piece is pushed down

    I love how it looks and everything, but you forgot to distinguish between the black and white squares, even if some of the squares are not the same size it could still be difficult to tell

  • @ManoyAndoi.JollyRogerHobbies

    But if all the squares are the same color, doesn't that make it harder to play chess? Amazing work though

    Personally I would have pronounced at least one of the colors of square. It matters for Bishops, as they can never cross from one color to another, and so it's common to refer to each one as either a "light" or "dark" Bishop. Here it's really hard to tell at a glance. Maybe if you wanted to be _really_ fancy, make it algebraic notation compliant with labeled ranks and files.

    Very very nice! If you had a way to detect which pieces were where you could have the ESP32 indicate valid moves when a piece is picked up. Also an integrated timer would be a neat touch.

  • @camper-11

    I think that using magnets to secure the hinges at the bottom isn't a particularly good idea, as the magnets might make it feel premium, but correct me if I'm wrong, if you shake the box, everything will fall out, and if the magnets are strong enough to hold it together now, they will eventually lose power anyway. Also, it would have been really cool if you made a timer incorporated into the board, that would give you a lot of productivity.

    • @camper-11
      @camper-11 5 днів тому

      (Magnets get weaker over time)

    • @camper-11
      @camper-11 5 днів тому

      I think if you made the magnets in the board (to hold the pieces still while playing) electromagnets you would be able to also use @benrex7775 's idea to light up the pieces really easily.

    • @hobbybuilt
      @hobbybuilt 5 днів тому

      Very interesting idea. Electromagnets might be cool but very expensive. You have given me an idea for a future idea though!

    • @hobbybuilt
      @hobbybuilt 5 днів тому

      They are surprisingly strong and if shaken the pieces do not fall out. But if dropped they would fall for sure, maybe a future version would have a carrying case to protect the board and pieces. As for neodymium magnets they lose very very marginal amounts of strength (like 1-2%) over decades so not too worried there.

    • @camper-11
      @camper-11 5 днів тому

      @@hobbybuilt What about incorporating a timer into the board? The lights may be cool, but they are mainly a gimmick in most situations, if I had that board I wouldn't bother turning the lights on, but if you put a timer into the board, it would be more portable and I would prefer it to using a phone. Another idea, which I think would be really good, is incorporating magnets on the extra bits on the sides of the board. When you play chess, and a piece is eliminated, you usually put it on the side, so putting magnets there would be pretty helpful, right? I hope you make a part 2 of this because I enjoyed watching the video and think you could make an even cooler chessboard with even more productivity features. 🙂🔥 (edit: I just checked your channel and OMG HOW DO YOU ONLY HAVE 5K SUBSCRIBERS, you deserve at least 500k!)

    As a chess player and a maker myself, i really love all the craftmanship put in this chessboard ! I just don't understand why you mold the pieces when you could 3d print the other team in another resin and it would be cheaper to produce, unless you wanted to try to create a batch process to make many boards like this :)

    • @hobbybuilt
      @hobbybuilt 5 днів тому

      So originally I wanted to make clear resin with leaves and bark embedded in the pieces, SLA printing can’t do that. Ultimately resin parts are not as optically clear either + if I wanted to make multiple sets I can do so. Long story short a few reasons!

    • @wilr2k
      @wilr2k 5 днів тому

      @@hobbybuilt Oh yes i totally get it ! I forgot the "leaves in the resin" part in your video but it definitely make more sense now :) Idk but maybe a 2-part mold would ease this leave inclusion process ?

    The chess pieces look super light weight and if they are you should consider adding a small weight on the bottom. More heft makes it feel good when you play.
