Bitburg Air Base Germany (Bitburg Air Force Base) and Bitburg Tour 1988
While stationed in Bitburg while in the Air Force, my father and his friend took a driving tour of the base including the living areas, the work buildings and the surrounding town to document life and create a snapshot of what living on a U.S. Airbase in Germany was like pre-Berlin wall collapse.
For those that lived on the base around this time, I have found it very hard to find any videos of what the building looked like and as a young child have been struggling to recall life on the base as I was 6 at the time. While converting old VHS tapes from our time in Germany from 1987-1990, I came across this tour and hope that posing this will help others who had shared experiences.
Enjoy. #BitburgAirforcebase #germany #tour #bitburg

Everything is falling apart for 30 years. So sad.
Stationed from 82-84, weapons load team #2 man. I made many friends, great 1st base.
Nice video. I was stationed at Bitburg from 87-90. 525 AMU. What a time.
Building 13 D 1. 1989 thru 94. Middle school and high School. Thanks for the memories!
I was there from '93 to '97 as a dependent. Loved every minute of it.
Thank you for the upload. My mother is from Bitburg, my dad was stationed there when he met her in 1950s and if you were there in the late mid late 80s,an 90s and you bought alcohol at the base liquor store likely you met my uncle Paul who ran the liquor store on base for decades He’s my German uncle. Just dropping some member berries 🤣 Again awesome find and thank you for sharing.
Wow! This was nostalgic to see. We left in 1972. So much has changed. I saw tge building where we lived. Is it still empty or torn down?
93-95 at Spangdahlem, I've been back and onto Bitburg, the ops side is alive and well and thriving w/German businesses, I used the bowling alley. The Caserne side was pretty abandoned and closed off, the high school w/weeds pushing up through the cracks. Great assignment I miss.
Oh wow. We lived in Binsfeld from 88-92. I went to Bitburg HS from 88-90. This brings back so many memories. Especially getting stuck in the snow trying to meet my curfew and some amazing Germans pulled my car up the hill before the cops left my mom’s house to go find me. Couldn’t have asked for a better teen & young adult experience. ❤ Germany is still my favorite place in the World.
We lived in Binsfeld too but 94-97
there from '88-'91 with the Army. Thank you for posting this. Brings back a lot of memories.
Our daughter was born at the base hospital in 1988. I'm was happy to see this video and remember those good times. Thank you for posting it.
Thanks for posting it. I was there from 83-85....
My father worked for GE 1963-1966 at Bitburg. He was an electrical engineer. We lived off base in Pruem. I was just a kid 8 years old but i have such fond memories of Germany and the countries we traveled too. Met my maternal grandparents when they were in Scotland.
Thanks for sharing.. Love seeing videos from Back in the day.. This was my husbands first base.We were there from 82 to 85 the best base we've ever been to and the best friends avd tines.
I was there 81'/84. It's been 40years now. This VIDEO show things still the same as I was there. Lived in the housing 14/d/1. My husband was SPS. /Security. We didn't have a guards gate when living there.
rode the bus 36 miles oneway every day to school at Bitburg 83 - 86 8th through 10th grade miss it
Was there 85-88. Good times!
Thank you for posting this! at 1.30 minutes in I saw my Toyota Landcruiser. We lived in the building next to the base hospital. Who was your dad, and who was Dale? I worked in the Wing Headquarters Bldg when he was there and my wife worked in Accounting and Finance.
He would have gone by Lt. Colonel Berger, the commentator was Paul Batt (unsure of rank), but my dad said he got the special boots with his uniform.
Outstanding.....I was there 86-89 so I am very familiar with these sights...Thank you.
Oh yes... I remember having to use the Laundry Rooms in housing at Spangdahlem. And visiting my buds (during lunchtime) at Bitburg... good times.
Final years of the Cold War. A decade past the peak of "That '70s Show." Beginning with the "Era of the Eagle." 🦅 27th to 29th April 1977. 🦅 Eifel Eyrie's "Glory Days." Gone forever. 🍻
I live near the air base, my mother once told me what it used to be like there. It's a shame that everything is so empty there. Great video!!!
My family was there 88-92, if anyone knew the Huffs. Randall, Chris, Jennifer, Jessica. Middle School/ High Schoolers. We lived in building 14 and 4.
I was stationed in Bitburg 89 to 92 the best time I had
Thanks for sharing. I bet McDonald's is cheaper over there in 2024 than it is here Lol. I'm amazed at how they make it like home. Not something every ordinary citizen realizes. Although they should. After all, it is our money.
Thanks for posting this! I lived at Bitburg when I was in grade school during the time this video was filmed. I remembered a lot! I was a little bummed that you didn't drive by the elemeary school, and twice you went by my building and the camera was pointed the other way! Ha! But that's fine, I'm thrilled to see ANYTHING OF Bitburg. We left in 1989 and I don't think I'll get a chance to go back so this is very appreciated.
Great Video! I'm absoluty loving it. I live in Bitburg right next to the housing area. Always wanted to see how it looks/looked over there. The whole housing complex has been sitting empty for at least 20 years now. Hopefully the city will go through with the latest attempts to use this huge place for something
Glad you enjoyed it, it was definitely nostalgic for me. It does seem a shame all those buildings arent being used for anything at the moment.
