Operating the F-100F Super Sabre (ground/flight footage)
After our very successful F100 video (thanks to all of you!), we’ve had requests for different edits of this flight, including more external views of what the ground crew is up to during these outings! I hope you enjoy this “different” look at the same flight where I included more external videos plus some onboard corresponding footage, as well as some voiceover explanations here and there. Enjoy!
Thanks to Collings Foundation and Vietnam War Flight Museum plus all of the volunteers for making this flight/video possible!

    You've mentioned the landing speed of 170 knots before, but that's still surprisingly high... to me. I used to work on Skyhawks, which (if memory serves) landed closer to 150 knots. Both the A-4 and the F-100 have leading edge slats and flaps, but the F-100 impresses me as having more wing span. The F-100 probably weighs a lot more, so maybe that's the reason for the high landing speed? Or is it just that the USAF knows that it has a few miles to slow down? 😉 Nice to see the start-up process. Glad that no modern aircraft have to bleed the hydraulics after starting! Thanks for the video!

    • @JetJerod
      @JetJerod 18 годин тому

      You’re correct that some of it is the higher weight but also aerodynamic design/limits. The F100 departs controlled flight at around 156 knots (depending on weight/temp).

    I spent 6 years of my career on J-57s in F-8 Crusaders. I was an engine mech and high power engine operator. Seems like lots of differences between F-8s and F-100s in how things work. I never had a compressor stall problem on the ground except for one time when I was told to make it chug no matter what. All the chugs in F-8s happened at altitude when the bleed valve governor failed. Also, never had to bleed the hydraulic systems when the engine was running. Aboard ship during Vietnam we had 5 minute alert planes on the cat ready to start with the pilot in the cockpit. The plane would have had all systems checked with a short run and then shut down. When the call came to launch, the huffer would be started and as soon as it was ready air would hit the engine starter. Hose and power would be disconnected, canopy down, downlocks off, cat holdback and shuttle hooked up and within 3 minutes the plane would launch!! Anytime the engine would be shutdown the fuel pressurization and dump valve( P&D) would dump fuel from the engine manifold out the bottom of the plane. I didn't see that on the F-100. Great video and I'm sure it was a lot of fun to fly. Too bad F-8s aren't allowed to be flown. Thanks a lot Jerod!!!!!!!

    • @JetJerod
      @JetJerod 4 дні тому

      @@planemech2 loved reading your comment and thanks for your service and insight! If you watch close, you can see the fuel dump during shut down just as you described! When flying them more often, the bleeding of the systems is much less of an issue but this is the second flight since 2019 so we take our time and check everything before going! She no longer has a mission as she did in years gone by but our mission is to make sure she stays safe and airworthy for years to come!

    • @NX524CF
      @NX524CF 4 дні тому

      The issue with compressor stalls was more related to the relatively small mouth and length of the intake. Once there was ram air going down it, it was less of an issue. The hydraulic bleeding only had to be done the first flight of the day, and much like your hot birds was done by crew chiefs while readying it for a mission.

      @@R.O.K.SimGameEnjoyer definitely! The Sabre Dance is caused by the pilot, it’s not something the aircraft just randomly does (only saying that because it seems that so many people think the aircraft just spontaneously does that for no reason…!)

    What is that big ugly box on the dashboard ? It should be relocated underneath.

      @@-bollox right! It’s there to block the blast of the wind and front seat rockets in the event of an ejection. Unlike the stock Dart seats, these Martin Bakers can be individually ejected so they had to protect the person in the rear cockpit. In the event of an ejection, that even has a mechanism on the top of it to extend it even higher for a bit more protection.
