Hoverfly Lagoons Project: A Journey into the Past, Present and Future
Hoverfly Lagoons Project: A Journey into the Past, Present and Future
Dr Ellen Rotheray
entoLIVE
17 Jul 2024
The Hoverfly Lagoons project was invented in 2016 for the University of Sussex’s Buzz Club, a citizen science charity exploring wildlife gardening techniques for insects. The aim was to trial artificial habitat, essentially small water bodies designed for some (magnificent) species of hoverfly which are semi-aquatic. These water bodies may be missing in our urban and rural landscapes due to a lack of natural habitat such as mature trees. The Buzz Club learnt that: Hoverfly Lagoons are very easy to create; size doesn’t matter (much); they’re used by a broad invertebrate community; and they could be a useful tool to investigate biological unknowns and to monitor environmental change. Dr Ellen Rotheray takes us through her lagoons journey - past, present, and plans for the future.
Dr Ellen Rotheray is a senior lecturer in Ecology and Conservation at the University of Sussex, a member of the IUCN Hoverfly Specialist Group, and a member of the Pine Hoverfly Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) Steering Group. Ellie got her first taste of hoverfly research during her masters degree in 2006, which opened up a new, exciting world of discovery and exploration. What’s more, due to the nature of the project, it was an opportunity to apply scientific findings directly to shape effective conservation management. Inspired by habitat creation efforts trialled during her PhD, Ellie invented the Hoverfly Lagoons project, largely in the hopes that when people caught a glimpse inside this world, it might evoke a desire to protect it.

    Been rooting around in our compost bin and found a few, which is great! Not many in the lawn, perhaps too waterlogged and the underlayer is clay you can make bricks from. A few small ones can be found 20 cm deep, will check leaf litter later this year. There don't seem to be worm events in Northern Ireland, we have some sites that are wetland/moorland that would make good sampling sites, easy to access and protected areas, so no issues with worms being gone due to pesticides etc.

    I can totally see how naming it No Mow May infers that June 1st = Mow Day. They should call it something more encouraging or open ended like Make Hay May or Meadow May instead. Of course the inherent issue is that beyond one month our regular garden lawnmowers struggle to deal with all the growth. Since embracing wildflowers instead of neatly trimmed lawngrass I've had to retire my petrol mower in favour of a scythe! That together with a fiskars push mower (The only one I could find with a range from ~1cm to >10cm) set me back 8x the cost of a cheap electric garden mower!

    I think it's well established from meadow management practices that the right time to mow "depends". Whether we take an early cut or a late cut all impacts the growing conditions for the following season so my practice has been to cut 1/3rd of my garden early (mid July), cut 1/3rd late (Aug/Sep) and leave 1/3rd untouched as an overwintering habitat for bugs.

    Disapointed as thought this is about how to refurbish a bee hotel ie overhaul an existing one rather than the two Citizen Science projects that are being promoted by the Buzz Club that will give data to optimizer been hotels.

    • @buzzclub7355

      Hi Chris! Apologies for the confusion from the title. That's an interesting idea - how to overhaul an existing bee hotel, particularly if e.g. you've been bought one as a gift - with the best of intentions - that is actually a bit rubbish. How to identify the problems with it, how to rectify or minimize, and so on. I can't remember where of the top of my head but I've definitely seen something about that for some commercial designs; such as: replacing piles of pine cones with bamboo tubes, adding mesh to deter birds, adding depth to hotels that are a bit short. Could be a really useful resource for the website - I will have more of a think about this! -Linda

    Apologies, but just cannot see this working reliably. If humans cannot distinguish species without a microscope, difficult to believe AI can do so. AI can learn to interpret X-rays for example, looking for lung cancer, possibly more reliably and faster than humans; but humans can do the task, there are visible clues, AI can imitate but not invent. And even then, the results can be misleading; in one study the AI learnt that x-rays labelled from the cancer hospital usually had cancer, whilst x-rays from elsewhere usually did not; it took the humans a while to work out why the trial results looked so good. Sorry.

    • @biologicalrecordingcompany
      @biologicalrecordingcompany 8 місяців тому

      Hi Dave. We’re aware that AI can’t do the impossible. It may be possible for humans to distinguish between species of earthworm without microscopy but we don’t have the data (or experience) to do that yet. With earthworms, they’ve rarely been observed live and I’ve already learnt a lot personally about the live appearance of various species just within this project (they look very different once preserved as most colour is lost). The hospital analogy is a good one and we can use this to our advantage… if the AI struggles to differentiate between species based on images alone, we can add in ecological data to investigate if that helps it (E.g. it was found in dung, and only species x, y and z are likely to be found in dung). The hope is that the AI can reach a suitable accuracy level for at least some species. Keiron

    Yellow Cellar Slugs don't eat living plants? Not so sure about that one. I had slugs devasted my seedlings every night. After three days I decided to search for the culprit. Found two of what I'm pretty sure were Yellow Cellar Slugs. After removing them I lost no more of those seedlings. The slugs in question sat under a slab about 50cm away from the plants. Is there a look alike?

    Totally bloody crazy. Thanks for the talk and all the work you are doing. I appreciate why you focus on the science but ultimately this sort of problem (and sadly this is typical of how we treat the seas worldwide ) needs to be sorted politically. And that means an end to treating our oceans as a dumping ground. We can't continue pretending that if we dump our rubbish where it can't be seen, then we've dealt with it. I will try to make one of the talks. I'm based in Lincolnshire and am concerned that the proposed new tanker port / "green" barrage on the Wash will lead to similar problems. It will certainly destroy unique and irreplaceable habitat. When will we learn?

      Without credible science your political arguments are without substance and are easily dismantled by the opposed parties. Proper science forms the foundation for the political case. There's no 'unfortunately' about it. You need both good science and good politicians making the case to the public. It's not an overnight process. Hand wringing and despair is useless. It needs a sustained effort of good science and effective political communication and pressure.
