I Crash-BUSTED 2 Carbon Booms :(
Переглядів 6 тис.Рік тому
The 2 booms I busted in the video were new and were the warranty replacements for 2 other identical booms that cracked in normal sailing condition just after half a dozen sessions. In all fairness, the brand managed the situation gracefully and replaced the booms but something was obviously wrong with the construction. I ended up ditching the 4 broken booms over an 18 months period. Ultimately,...

Windsurfing on the Fast Lane - Lake Michigan sailing

Blasting in whatever conditions is my thing. The exhilaration, the rush that comes from going as fast as I can is second to none. I bet I'm not the only one here! If the obnoxious soundtrack drives you mad, just turn off the sound. ;) If anyone is wondering, everything is at actual speed except for a few slow motions here and there and one section of a jibe I sped up for a cool effect! Question...

I'm more of a lightwind/freeride/freerace kind of rider and when on the rare occasion nice swell and waves show up with 25 to 35 knots of wind, things become a bit more challenging. Suddenly, everything I was taking for granted is back on the table and new skillsets have to be learned. Some will say that my kit is not meant to ride in these conditions. Maybe, but I feel more "in control" riding...

totally envious as usual
Pfhooaaa, a whole week of zero wind here on the Baltic sea. Bah and humbug! Oh well, watchin Juutuub.
Hang in there! Our summer here wasn’t stellar either. Fall will change everything!
Looks awesome and nice edit. I think you need some cameras, maybe an Omnimax on the nose? Been super busy with life and work and have been sailing starved, glad you're getting out.
Thanks! Omnimax: That would be a bit overkill, right?! I can't barely make sense of the footage of both camera! Haha! Well, you do what you can with the schedule you have but you know that every minute you can spend on the water will be even more appreciated! ;)
Fine - but windsurf is way cooler
I agree but I'm bias! ...and I never kitefoiled, so I'm not the best to say anyway! Ha!
AL 360 carbon booms are the best quality on the market
Never heard of this brand but it looks great! Unfortunately, we don't have access to these products in the US.
Cool vid. How are they holding up compared to the Ezzy Lions? I have lions and like them.
Thanks! The MarkII is holding ok but they are definitely more fragile than Ezzy's: Rigging and derigging will shorten the life of MarkII faster than Ezzy's. I think the MarkII also have more top-end speed and less back hand pressure than the Ezzy Lion I used to have. But honestly, I think the average sailor wouldn't notice much difference.
Yes, sounds familiar. Here in the Baltic sea summers are marginal.
I bet! At least I can see you can surf on ice during winter. Here, ice on inland lake has become an uncertain thing since climate change has made temps warmer in air and water.
Rad!
Quite hilarious! 🔥
and the kitefoil will be having fun in 8 knots ... not so sure about the windsurfer
Just like kitefoilers, windfoilers might have fun in 8kn with the right kit and setup. Windsurfing in 8kn or stay on the beach with bear? The choice is easy! ;)
How long did it take you to figure out the foot change? I’m able to do pretty much everything you do, right up until my foot change - then it’s like I’ve got two left feet! 😠 Any tips?
Ha! Good question. It took me a couple years and about a 100 session to get the move fluid and consistent enough. I’m kinda slow learner! In the case of a normal carve jibe, the foot switch happens right before you are straight downwind. You might want to practice the move on dry land so you build muscle memory. I never got a sudden breakthrough learning the jibe. It takes time, determination and patience for your body and mind to manage this complicated move. Just keep practicing and failing until you get it. It will happen! And don’t be discouraged because you managed to do it well one day and it doesn’t work the next. I still make mistakes when I’m not 100% giving it my best! Cheers!
@@whynowind thanks so much! I’ve been trying to learn the step gybe for about 9 months. Some days it really feels like I’m going backwards. Dry land practice is definitely a good idea. I’ll keep trying! 🤞
nice "drum & bass" tune at 5'00... fits well with the speed run ;)
Thanks! Finding music and editing for it to fit is why I like putting these vids together.
Heck yeah dude
looking good!!!
Your favorita sail ,goya or Neil pryde??
NP V8 vs. Goya Mark2: NeilPryde wins on performance: More balanced, lighter, more powerful, more range, faster. Noticeable mainly in sizes 7.2 and above. But NP is also more expensive, they release current year sail collection late (March/April if not later in some cases), and customer service is inexistant (They won't reply to emails). Goya is great at replying in case of issues and will help when needed advice. (Edited for typos)
@@whynowind Well, Neil Pryde is top, there is no doubt about it.... thanks
Very cool vid. But you need a helmet to wind surf?
Thanks! A helmet can be useful when hitting the mast at 35mph during a crash. But it mostly reassures my wife who feels better when I wear one! 😂
@@whynowind Gotcha, (on both accounts 😉)
Making it look easy!
Ha! Thanks! Took me some time to get it though!
Hot dance moves!
😁
ΤΟ ΕΧΕΙΣ ΑΚΟΜΑ ΤΟ ΠΑΝΙ;;;
Not sure I fully understand your note but if you want to know if I still have the sail, the answer is no!
Used to wind surf too, was fun but out grew it…
That's sad. Same here: Surfing as a young kid but then other stuff happened. Now 53 and sailing again for 5 years now. I'm better than I ever was and improving! Awesome.
I miss windsurfing 😢
I hear you! It's addicting!
Hauling A$$!!
Do you have any footages of the same wind conditions but on a Big Lake? Wanna see how big swell can be there, but did not manage to find a proper example.
It is hard to get a feel for how big the water conditions can be on large inland lakes on my footage. I use GoPro cameras in very wide angle lens setting which flattens out any sense of scale. However, large swell on Lake Michigan for example can be as high as 12 to 14 feet in certain conditions. But on average, it is more like 4 to 6 feet tall.
Rippin!
So cool!!!!
🔥 oh yeah!
Bolt 107l. ??
Bolt 117l / 5.4 Goya Mark2 / 37cm Select S-max fin (too big for a 5.4 sail)
@@whynowind good equipment for flying...
Great guy! Keep it going!
Great Video setup! Love it!
Thx! To your credit, you provided great 360 setup advice!
What do you prefer windsurfing or windfoiling?
Windsurfing. I like the direct contact with the water better. You?
@@whynowind I don't do either yet. Just wondered which is easier to learn.
Are you talking about windfoiling or wingfoiling? This is different. Anyhow, if you are talking about winDfoiling, I don't think you can put this in terms of what's easiest to learn. A good level of windsurfing skills is a requirement to be able to windfoil. Learning on a windfoil gear would be overly challenging and dangerous (foil wings are sharp and close to your legs/feet underwater!). Most if not all windfoilers are windsurfers to start with. If you are interested in windfoiling, you will be better off leaving the foil out of the learning equation and start the basics of windsurfing first. Good on you for taking the challenge. Learning to Windsurf is not easy but progress is fast if you can commit to the sport regularly. If your plan is to windsurf once in a year while on vacation, progress can be slow. In that case I suggest you take on kitboarding: Harder to learn at first but once you get it (after 10-15 hours of lessons), you'll be able to ride and have fun whether you ride x10 or x60/year. Windsurfing is easier to learn at first (slow speed in displacement mode) but being able to ride like I do, will take you longer: There are more skills to own and that are challenging (harness, footstraps, jibing, tacking, jumping, etc.) However, once you are hooked to windsurfing, it's likely for life! Good luck!
@@whynowind Thanks for the info. Since windfoiling is a much smoother ride once up on the foil, I thought it might be easier to learn, less jarring vs regular windsurfing.
It is definitely smoother once on the foil but keeping it up is and under control is difficult. If you know how to windsurf first, your learning curve in windfoing would be significantly faster, more enjoyable and safer! Good luck.

👍 Yes! They are very well built! Will last for a while. Usually, the sun is the issue that will bake the film after a while. My most used Ezzy sails usually last about 150 sessions/days. More if less exposed to UVs.
:D shout at the last minute of the video is very funny :)
Glad to hear. 👍 ...I've seen comments from people taking it a bit too seriously 😂
I’m on 3rd session in the foil Thanks for sharing makes me feel good and nice job
Glad it helped.
Nice video. What brand & model mast are you using with the Goya Mark 2? Is it rdm or sdm? I'm considering getting the 9.2.
Thanks! I'm using an RDM Ezzy Hookipa 91% carbon mast. It fits OK but keeps the leech a bit too loose at the very top. Not a big deal but doesn't look right. I also tried a Neil Pryde mast, and it doesn't work. I'd recommend using a Goya mast to get a perfect trim and best performance for this sail. I would also recommend using an SDM mast for a 9.2. It will be more responsive and will maintain a more constant profile. The sail is nice and light, but the tradeoff is lack of durability: The sail is mostly Monofilm and features a fairly light gauge mast sleeve fabric (compared to Neil Pryde V8 for example). So, threading the mast in the narrow sleeve with minimum creases on the film or wear on the sleeve is a challenge. To manage that, I thread the first 1/2 of the mast from the base and then I move to the boom clip to finish pushing it through while letting the fabric fold gently and evenly across all the spaces between the battens. I then go to the base and pull the sail down before threading the extension. What's important here is to not let the sail drop on the ground without a minimum of downhaul tension or the monofilm will fold hard onto itself and generate unwanted creases. So, keep the extension at arm's reach! Does that make sense? It's impossible to avoid some creases but the less is best! To derig, I use a screwdriver that I thread through the small loop at the top of the sail and plant it at a slight angle in the ground. That way, once I get the boom and the extension out, I pull on the sail (handle strap and the tack fairing) to keep it taught and at the same time I pull on the mast in a fairly quick motion to unthread it from the sleeve. This tends to avoid creases on the monofilm. That could be the subject a vid I guess... Anyhow, good luck and have fun! (Edited for typos)
I feel you... Exactly my current experience
hi. just a couple tips i took from nico prien. lean into the turn a lot more and extend your front arm so the mast/sail is pointing towards the nose of the board so you will keep your board trim and consequently won't loose the speed you need to plane all the way throught. hope it helps. Regards. Keep posting.
On a similar board (95 cm Tillo Convertible) about the only way I can stay planing throughout the jibe, assuming a sail 8.6-10.0, is to stay clew first on a pretty broad reach until the speed comes back up a little, then flip the sail really late
Badass brother keep the vids coming
try to hold on to the boom when catapulting this should reduce the impact on the boom a little!
speedsurfing in super choppy water and going 30 knots isn't the best idea. I tryd to hold on for dear life, flew away broke my aluminium boom by ripping my harness lines
@@maikelvantures3660Not the best idea, but fun anyway! I play, I pay!
Wow, great job. I will follow these steps too. Just holding on. Breaking stuff? Probably part of the game somehow. I do not bother, goal is to teach yourself foiling
Hahaha😂 great to see this. Exactly my experience too. The flips and flops are for sure part of all this. Don’t be afraid to be catapulted or thrown over. It will come over time but you need to get through. Thanks for sharing the raw side of first flights
Thank you. Yes, the initial journey is a bit rough and unsettling indeed!
Super ce petit air de java à l'accordéon!
Haha! In petit air de bal musette fait toujours sourire!
Awesomeness!!! Reminded me of one of my sessions down there years ago, and one wipeout where I bounced off the water. It was windy. Good times!!
It’s 100% quality issue especially it seems to me that both booms are same brand.
Yes, they are both identical booms and from the same brand
Yes my dude the weather here in Michigan is very angry😂
Haha! True. Never a dull moment on Lake Michigan!
Great session!
Thank you! :)
i love windsurfing and kitesurfing , in my spot the windsurf usually goes faster, i just bought a foil to keep it up with de windsurf when im on a kite .
Yep! Ususally a windsurfer is faster than kiteboarders ridding a surf or twintip. A Kitefoiler will be faster than a windsurfer ridding in lightwind. Your kitefoil setup should be fun and fast! Cheers!
