sprint and roll session

First and only 'proper' session this week, otherwise it's been bits and pieces cartwheels, wall handstands, kickups etc. Today; Feed the cats after warm up, with extra 40m sprints to look at the last 10m times. Also 100 knuckle pushups (right elbow sketchy) After, a 20 mins session of shoulder rolls, forward backward, crawls, cartwheels, kickups, bridges
cartwheel.and rings practice

Mostly cartwheels after a long warm up in the cold wet weather. I concentrated on leg control and landing in a mirror position to starting position, off set 45 degrees. Quite a lot of success with that. Just one rings set, all I had time for, I think false grip is therapeutic for being opposite of the extended wrist press position of cartwheels. Tucked muscleup, transition MU, regular MU and di...

forward rings roll - what can go wrong
Переглядів 11614 днів тому
I'm not a teacher so take this with a dose of scepticism, but I thought it might be helpful to look at how a forward roll can go wrong and what can happen. I remember first trying to forward roll and it was unnerving to roll forward, I didn't know what might happen - could I hold on? Would I just drop to the ground? The reality was that it's not hard to hold on, no harder than doing a false gri...

Cartwheel handstand looking quite intentional and strong. Back in the land of trees, you're literally surrounded. Always strong ring work, you just had to get that hoodie off at the beginning. Well done sir.
Very clean and smooth rings routine Barefoot burpee! And that sissy squat is no joke, you have adamantium knees!
That's right, before a year ago I was mainly doing burpees! I need to do these knee things more regularly, there's just not enough time to do all the exercises, I've kinda made my mind up to resell the sandbags 😢and concentrate more on the rings/floor work/running modalities. I also want to get beyond 3 ball juggling, I have a book on it but failed so far to make inroads
@ yeah I feel you, there’s too many things I want to do too, and limited time. Unfortunate with the sandbag situation, but rings, floor work and running is more than enough to keep one fit! And juggling sounds pretty cool, working on that hand-eye coordination and reflex!
Just catching up...Ooo a new location...looks a little desolate, but in a good way...I am still looking for an appropriate 40m stretch, free of hassle to do a running/burpee challenge...😄
A football pitch would be a good place, or bowling green if you could get away with it. Here, I'm right between the two, with the Bude downs, golf course and car park beyond, and it's early morning so it does look a bit bleak!
I can imagine there is something "freeing" about doing the turns and movements in the air on the rings. Free of being on the earth perhaps?
It is a freeing feeling, maybe it's being free of the Earth, but more so, being able to express something physically, it feels like something that is just pleasant to do, perform and try and get better at performing. I'm finding the same with cartwheels, trying to 'control' them, put my feet where I want when I want, it's a game/challenge about proprioception and other facets, it's capturing my imagination
one arm are deadly bro!!
Thanks Rev, I didn't time it, always get more timed, got about 80s hang time
making it look easy!
Was hard today! Gonna take a few sessions to get back into the swing
solid bro! Nice intro!! Now i know who you are!! You are that Halo guy, Master Chief!! Super Soldier.
Hehe alien frog

4:40 just get rained on!
Only rained once all week but over night, didn't get to test this feat of engineering and convenience ! It's actually listed as the fifth best local landmark 😁 but did have the pleasure of three separate walks up and down the 70m tunnel
@@HybridGym this cracks me up. The 5th best landmark! Lol.
@@PaulfromOregon😅 i think it was nunber one for awhile as people 'inflated the votes'. They actually police tis kind of thing apparently 😅 but to be fair, apart from the beaches, the tunnel is a distinctive feature! Kind of 80's wacky
@@HybridGym come to Cornwall, you don't even need an umbrella!
2:37 the Kansas of England.
Certainly barren style. I think they keep it like this for the dog walker golf loving constituency maybe
I am especially fond of the somersaults because I can't do them anymore. Living vicariously through Hybrid Gym.
The vertigo? I tend to not do them for ages then do so many I go dizzy, like, if I'm going to get cold and muddy I'll REALLY get cold and muddy, rather than train sensibly
0:59 the fastest one. Maybe.
I thought maybe the third from last,.yet to do accurate timing but hoping it's 1.5s. in an ideal world it would be 1s
@HybridGym I did no accurate timing. Just guessing.
@@PaulfromOregonI'll get my stop watch out and have a go at it and report back! But will likely be around 1.7 with no world record 😮
I see no trees!!!
Mocking the rings that stayed in the car, there are very few trees, what I can see are not suitable, like palm trees, tiny or inaccessible
typical coast city in UK i guess.

@@reverendterminatorwell i could take or leave the dogs, actually I'd leave the lot of them, probably have to go do it at 4am😅 back now 6.5 hour drive 😮and much colder in the north
@@HybridGym it is sad to leave the vacation!! thats a really long drive in that small country.
Straight run it would be about 4.5 hours, but some motorway was closed. Cornwall is long, would take over 2 hours to drive the length, and no motorway in Cornwall

watch more later, we just got sky showtime, swedish crime
Oh yes I read in one of your messages! My wife would be jealous. We get some old sky on netflix, but not the latest stuff. Swedish crime is usually top calibre
@@HybridGym i taught you said before you had sky showtime, was it something similar?
@@reverendterminatorwe had paramount plus for a few months, mainly to watch Maverick. Then I think Tulsa King. One or two more, Then nothing left. Watching Fool me Once on netflix now, after finishing Brassic, I think the new season is on sky. Never had sky. We were going to change to sky but they messed up the package and it didn't go through, and I used that deal to broker a better Virgin media deal
great shots, i think i have seen this place before?
Not from me, I don't think I've ever been here before!
@@HybridGym thats cool bro!!great place
@@reverendterminatornorth Cornwall, it's great!
You use a ladder to set that up or just toss it over the branch?
They just get thrown over at this height. I once took a stool and set them higher with two more sets of rings and did brachiation! But I didn't enjoy how long the set up/take down took
Great work on display. What a lovely gym for your enjoyment.
Thank you. Yes really enjoy this style of training!
I mentioned in my vid about having a particular spot, but you must have a unique view you see from your higher position...😎

¨GOOD workout bro.. muscle ups in rings are tough to do!
They are tricky but now I've had years of practice!
That was a nice little flow at the end!
Looks a lot better at speed! I tried to keep a hand on the mat and moved around it continuously
@@HybridGymdidn’t realise you had a mat there!
Yes it's like a piece of rubber, I matted out my attic but cut off pieces as outdoors mats, better than gloves 😎
Cartwheels so slow and smooth it looks like slow motion. Strong rings too... I see you sitting in those dips! Very impressive.
Thanks Paul, definitely trying for that floaty feel to the 'wheel(s), and rings I thought I'd do tucked legs to see what that felt like MU
@@HybridGym what's the conclusion on the tucked legs?
It was ok for one rep. I should have done another to check, but I think I do rely on the stretched out legs as a dynamic element and counter balance. I was feeling a bit rushed today, I spent over 20 mins on the wheels and warmup then had less than 5 mins to get the rings up and down again
intro and workout on fire.
Indeed, Norwegian style

Sprints and cartwheels? What more could one want...!
Rings! 😅 But not nuch else 👍👌😎
Great session! The tunes really vibed well with the energy of it. Cartwheel stalls looking nice and controlled. Good stuff HG.
One of my all time favourite Autechre tracks, the late 90's early millennium is my fave period. I'm stoked the cartwheels continue to gain more control, i plan to do then a lot next week and try and get a consistent mirror image landing squat the other side. Unfortunately i still over and under kick up but not as much as with straight up kickups
@@HybridGym you've found your secret method with the cartwheels. Autechre is great, lump them in with a lot of great electronic music of the time. Mu-sic, Amon Tobin, Aphex, etc.
@@PaulfromOregontrue. Boards of Canada maybe? Aphex twin was my first obsession around 1997, selected ambient works 2

@@PaulfromOregonhehe 👍 if time travel exists it probably exists in Oregon
@@HybridGym because we're so socially backwards outside of large towns? It's like traveling back in time to 1950.
Pretty killer ring runs there. Some of those cartwheel holds were straight up cartwheels into handstands. Cool stuff.
They seem to be getting there! Might sneak into handstand territory through the cartwheel stall back door 😊
A lot of time under tension here...
Yes! Was a bit long that first set. I might get more strategic and set a timer to limit the enthusiastic first set length, only I sent my gym boss timer through the wash now it's not working 😮
Hell yeah, you got the power HG! Very cool intros! 😎 Awesome ring freestyle! 💪🏽💪🏽
My Norwegian buddy did those voiceover clips for me! Thanks man, I kind of burnt out a bit on the long first set but just felt right 😊 the 45 degree cartwheel entries, I think it's a breakthrough in technique, looking forward to hit them again later
@@HybridGymawesome, yeah that sideways entry into a handstand is the first I’ve seen. Usually it’s a straight kick up.
upside down - is solid.
Thanks Rev! Poolside browsing! I hope to get more consistent soon with these with the new entry angle
@@HybridGym goood bro!!
wow 8 first seconds...coool mix... but most important - great - training bro. nice weather also..
Was great fun, to be honest the cartwheels were a highlight as I managed to stall so many, get them under control. The rings took my wrist skin to the limit!
Tower of babel is still in operation
Another classic! Pistol sesh
@@HybridGym my body hurts just watching pistols..
@reverendterminator you could do it! Just have to adapt slowly
The nearest I came to this was waiting outside a cinema with my daughter killing time 'till the film started and there was a low fence. She bet me I couldn't revolve around it very much like your forward roll movement, so I tried it...holding onto the fence via the inside of my elbows..and did it, to my own surprise..and yes, the main thing was a point where I was fully upside down to mentally continue forward rather than just panic and pull back. Quite enjoyable actually...
Nice trick! Parkour really! Did you have to release and regrip the bar though? Like a bar pullover, going over the front of the bar backwards, I think it has to be released and regripped. The good thing about rings if the grip and tension can be maintained. Going forward over a bar and regripping sounds harder, not sure I've tried that
@@HybridGym Just to be clear, it was basically 2 low wooden poles connected by a wooden bar, so a bit like a football goal...but even better, I have it on video! I will post it for you to show my gymnastic talent!😂
Excellent. You know, it's great when these moments happen, to demonstrate the work we put in in everyday situations/objects. If I see walls or stairs, I often jump them, or hop, or spontaneously do a cartwheel. Keeps us childlike perhaps 👍
@@HybridGym Just posted! Don't be too impressed!
It's a great start and not something someone not into 'that kind of thing ' would dream of trying!

Awesome angles, awesome instruction. My obstacle with these involves vertigo still. Working on getting that resolved. Great video, saved for later.
Ah forgot about your vertigo issue. Maybe going slow you could try it, might be ok?
Thanks HG! I will try these when I get a chance to hang my rings on a sturdier setup. I do not trust my door pull up bar 😂😅
Great! I think you'll enjoy them and get them straight away, just keep pulling as you roll over like its one long chin up
John from SE Asia 🙋♂️ Thanks for this HG! Will try these transition drills next ring session! And strong work on that flared-elbow dip! 💪🏽
Thanks J 👍 I believe the flare elbow dips are meant to be preparation for iron cross style movement
@@HybridGym are they much harder than regular dips? I’ve seen a few people on YT do it but I never bothered to try 😅
If you're not used to it, yes, must hit something different! Rings turned out at the bottom of the dip, RTO dips, are harder still! I can do maybe three. But they're good preparation for backward rolls. All these ring moves have different shoulder involvement! Backwards rolls hit the shoulders potentially a lot harder than the nice tucked forward roll where they are always comfortable. Pelicans hit my shoulders and upper back nasty at first, now I can put the stress more onto the biceps where I want it to go
@@HybridGym sounds great, yeah those rolls look like it hits the muscles very differently. What are your cues on those pelicans? I tried them before and it feels like I’m gonna tear my shoulder, so never tried them again 😅
Forward rolls are nice for the biceps, and surprisingly easy to rotate back to support hold once you get your head around the idea of falling forward over the pivot! The physical part is easier than the mental with that one. The pelicans, it's worth playing around a lot with rings height, body lean, and foot placement. Small adjustments make a big difference. And at first just do the eccentric part, you'll drop fast at first, then slow that down, a bit like trying to do the MU eccentric transition slower over time, putting on the brakes. Then try and get the pelican onto the biceps, again keep a nice big angle to protect them at first as it's quite a stretch. They're a bit like Nordic curls for the biceps, Nordics to me have the same kind of uncomfortable nature but noted for their effectiveness
Great title HG😄 Very few people incorporate flexibility into their workouts but yours are heavily flexibility and strength. You have a big range of exercises now. I guess either the sessions become longer trying to incorporate everything, or you have to section them off..but then you have to do more sessions to practice it all! I guess it can become a "Jack of all trades" or master of one [or two] perhaps...
I'm going down the jack of all trades route 😅 I think it's actually more realistic, be ok at cardio, fairly fast, some nice tricks that double up as mobility, and things that work the brain too or enter a flow state.... What I'm doing, is micro dosing things like wall handstands, bridges, and then in the session, using these things as warm ups too, so I'm getting skills time that doubles as warm up, then a main feast of something that works the fast motor units, stimulates hormones, and works on something useful, speed, strength, that's the idea anyway, more abstract goals. I've left it too late and I'm too injury prone to go full on into anything specific and 'make a name'
@@HybridGym Not sure if you have tried Creatine? I went through my main training years not taking it, but very recently have started taking the minimum recommended dose on a daily basis and it does seem to help recovery and help prevent injuries. My research produced a lot of good things about it and no real downsides. We do produce it naturally ourselves..
Yes to creatine, and quite a lot of other supplements too! I don't think we can get a lot from diet. I take amongst other things, leucine, citrulline, glycine, nac, tyrosine, all meant to help longevity and recovery performance
