One thing I actually hate in a knife is bearings. Smoother action, sure, but they get full of crap so fast. Good ol' bronze washers are the way to go for me. I use them at work, edc, etc. I don't need Uber fancy stuff.
I buy kizer fixed blades
I have the Benchmade Hidden Canyon Hunter in both S30V and S90V. While the steels are better on the Benchmades. Their sheaths suck. I bet the sheath is better on the clone.

400 bucks gets you a nice used gun, 800 gets you a nice new gun
I agree too, I've been using a no name $10 plastic handle knife for years from amazon, I use it without worry everyday, all day and somehow it's stood the test of time. I love it. I agree with the pricing, $60 is starting to get expensive for a tool that you use to pick at think, carve out things that are sticking out, chip away at things, open packages and plastics, pry things open... Etc. EDC is so often turning into show and tell instead of a use for anything tool. If you're scared to bust it out, get a cheaper knife
@@MachuSayTruck solid thought process brother
I have close to 40 folders of various price points, nobody and I mean nobody comes close to Civivi when it comes to bang for your buck. The fit and finish on every civivi I own was perfection, can't say the same about other knives I've purchased for quadruple the price.
I recently made a rule for myself. No more knives over a $100 anymore. Keep a cheap knife sharp and it will cut like any other knife.
@@luket557 solid rule
I bought a knife in Walmart a couple of years ago around the holidays. It was an Ozark Mountain Buck 112 look-a-like, and it cost $5. I have a drawer full of knives, but this particular one is the one I carry because I can get it sinister sharp with just a couple of licks on a strop. On the other side of the spectrum, my chefs knives are Gustav Emil Ern old time carbon steel so I run the gamut on knives. Just sayin’.
Don't by Chinese! DON'T BY CHINESE!
I would have to agree with you. I have several Benchmade knives. The only 1 I really use and love is the 940. There heat treatment isn’t great. I bought the same same civivi you have to use n really like it. I no longer have a great job to pay for the overpriced ones. I use mine n always have a buck stockman in my pocket as well.
I think we should take the term budget knife and toss it because what's so stupid is that people want to compare most of the size you find in the stores to something like an LT Wright or or something from Benchmade or tops which personally to me are just priced higher because of the name. Couple of years ago when Schrade models were kicking ass, everybody was buying there are 1095 Steel knives because they were strong and they were tough and durable and they got the job done but so many people were referring to them as budget knives and now those same knives are going for twice as much or more on eBay this idea that a smart person will pay a couple hundred dollars for a quality knife. The fact of the matter is that most of the knives that are around $200 or a little more are good nice but they're not really that much better than a knife you could get for 50 to $100. Just look at the cold steel srk or the Recon Tanto and then of course the one company that people love or they love to hate is Mora. The knives are all made at the same materials and and even if you talk about knives that cost $500 or more you're still going to have people argue about the steel. Go back to the days of the pioneers and they had knives but I don't think they sat around the campfire arguing who didn't pay enough for their knife or whose knife is inferior because it wasn't made with a specific type of steel or wood.
@@MasterK9Trainer the cold steel knives are a great example of your point. And when I use the word budget yea im talking about knives but also as a staple around an item I want that isn’t a direct need. Its different if its a mortgage payment than hey there no sense in arguing it. However, for this purpose here I simply mean 60 for me is an amount I want to just throw around. Gotta make sure it’s put to good use within the “budget.”
This topic is so individual. For people who only sees knives as a cutting tool its insane to use more than $100. Hey, even a $10 knife will cut. That Typhoon is more than just a cutting tool. Yes, it will cut, but all the details that makes it a excellent knife increases the price. Why do people buy BMWs or Farraris when a Toyota Prius can also get you from A to B? I collect knives and have paid more than $1000 for several of them, but for me those are not tools. Knives up to around $400 I can concider light use, heavy users up to about $100. The above $1000 are knives that can give me a special feeling, like art does for people interested in art, or Lamborghinis does to people interested in cars. Those I have at display and often handle with gloves on.
Your "value scale" sounds just about right. It would have to be a damned fine pocket knife of premium steel, that can make a good cup of coffee, for me to spend over $100 on it, especially considering the quality products that Civivi and others are producing around the $50 mark ... again, assuming you're looking for a useful tool and not a trophy.
I dont disagree a good knife cam be had for under $100 but for something that feels and gives you the same fit, finish, feelz and action of the EVO, you have to spend more. Some people don't know the difference and dont care, those that do will spend the $$$ and know why they do.
Buying a $400 knife is extravagant, but I am sure the Sharp by Design knife would last decades if it is used and not abused. That said, losing a really expensive knife is a real bummer.
Thank you for sharing. Great job! I’ve had one for over a year now, and this is really at great knife! I’ve bought two more since! Thanks again.

Nearly an exact clone of the Todd Beggs Steel Craft Mini Glimpse.. Not to be confused with the Beggs Mini Glimpse. ~Todd Beggs Steel Craft Mini Glimpse = approx. $140.00 on the secondary market ~Beggs Mini Glimpse (Terrible quality) = approx. $70 (Name and designs stolen by brothers) ~Icon (mini glimpse) = $30ish _ and barring materials is on par with the Todd Beggs version. Fit and finish are wonderful for a budget knife like this from Harbor Freight
@@thomastsunami3422 thank you very much for the insight brother ✊🏽
My knife cost me 30 shillings [say 2 or 3 dollars] in 1967 In todays money, about $30. I have carried it and used it most days since then - decent carbon steel, rosewood scales Sheffield made Now that is what I call value ! but it seemed pretty expensive at the time ;<)
Great video. Been talking about this with friends. I have a couple Survive!Knives. They are my most expensive at around $250. I bought a Chinese copy of the GSO 4.1 i have. In D2, micarta and honestly good fit and finish. Ive put it through full-on testing. I paid $40 shipped. I cant even explain how impressed i am with it. I. Glad i own the Survive!Knives i have bc i appreciate top-notch design and machining and skill. But ill probably never spend that kind of money again. It's too much, and im a working class dude. I love supporting American companies making Americanmade goods, but what you can get for the money today, it doesnt make sense for me personally. That said, if i had millions, then I'd buy the crazy stuff because i aplreciate high level craftsmanship at its best. Awesome video, thank you, sir.
It would be nice to have links to buy the clones, less the Walmart and Harbor Freight ones.
Great knife. I love it. Smoothest opening knife that I own.
I was able to get one of these knives with a 25% off coupon for $29.99 after I got it home and took it out of the package and fiddled with it a little I liked it so much I bought a second one at full price to put away in case they quit making them
thank you! for most people it is a fetish. it's just a dumb peace of steel. considering that you can buy complicated power tools for 150 Dollars it gets ridiculous 😅
You're spot on. I'm the same way with parfumes, if I had a really expensive one like 150+ dollar bottle, I'd be so hesitant to use it. I'd have a tendency to save it, thus robbing myself out of the enjoyment that I already paid for. That's why I really like looking for good quality budget ones, not only that I save money on them but I also use them way more. I'm currently eyeing a spyderco manix 2 I think they are really cool, I never bought an expensive knife and I know I would be scared to use it. Maybe it could be a good exercise to try to enjoy the even finer things in life and don't try to save them for some other time haha
@@verygoodverynice8295 it’s worth a shot, perhaps try with the cologne first. See if you’re willing to use the expensive one more often
I like a lot of different lower cost examples for experience sake. I have a hard time approaching or spending over 200, but I have and will. I have a couple OG run JWKs and one was a gift... IMO getting up to 300 for a cutting tool is forgoing value in favor of vanity. It has become a trophy at that point.
This isn't said enough. I like this video.
Hard to know how good the steel actually is until you pay the money.
I have been caring the knife for months. I put it in my front pocket. I fidget with it everyday. Some have said they had issues with the clip but mine is still holding strong.
@@larryblackmon2341 awesome man! I’m hoping this one holds up as well. Thank you for sharing your experience with it
I won an auction at a show for a Shirogorov and sold it on the forums in three hours. A $12K secondary market knife that I paid less than $3K at the show. It's insane.
@@beck4218 now thats awesome. A deal of a lifetime
Price point can be a limiting factor for sure. I have a self imposed limit of one knife at a time. This makes me choose my next knife very carefully. Currently I have a CRKT CEO. I also have Leatherman OHT. I rationalize that one is a pocket knife, the other a multi tool.
@@Dan_Ondutydriving I like the concept of one for each category
I picked up a Civivi Bulltusk in 14C28N. I ground off the hump in the spine at the tip. What a good-looking, performing folder for a reasonable price. I've got safe queens too, but I've learned to live with that problem! Good video. 👍

Nothing but Opinel and Victorinox for me. Depends on what I'm up to that day.
I like Kershaw and Civivi.
I understand you 100%. I live in Brazil, and here these knives are extremely expensive. The dollar is currently worth six times the value of the real (our currency). I earn a salary that is higher than the minimum wage, but it’s not a high salary, and even so, I bought a Shark Lock, which here cost me one month's salary. Then I bought a Kershaw Livewire, which again cost me another month’s salary. I also paid for a custom scale for my Shark Lock. At the time, I thought, "I’ve always liked knives, I’ve always wanted to have 'good' knives," but now that I’ve bought them, I can’t bring myself to use them. I keep them stored in a box and don’t use them for anything. Like you, I wouldn’t say it was a mistake. Sometimes I take them out of the box and play around with them. Since I’m a mechanic, I opened the Livewire to see the mechanism and admired it for a while because I really like these things. But when you buy something and your wife asks how much you paid for it, and you don’t have the courage to tell her the real price, it makes you question a little whether you made the right decision lol. Again, I don’t regret it, but I definitely wouldn’t make these purchases again.
Thanks for your message. I always try to calculate how many hours of my life I need to buy certain products. It's hard, sometimes we can't stop thinking about a product. And when government abuses you with taxes we need to change what we like. We not only need to have the right for bread, but also for art.
It's a choice, not a problem!😂

$150.00 for a knife is a conversation piece that probably doesn’t get used.
I agree with you. The most expensive knife I have ever bought was a Spyderco Native 5 in Fluted CF for my dad this Christmas. I have a ton of knives ranging from 20-250$ and the ones I use the most are some of the cheapest (Buck 284 Bantom, Cold Steel Tuf Lite, Kizer Cryptid). My American Blade Works Model 1 V6 (200$), Spyderco Shaman (235$), and Kershaw Link (125$) almost never get used and have been save queens up to this point, even if they are considered cheap knives to some people.
My personal knife price guide: 10-100: Daily Driver 100-250: Special Utility 250+: Jewelry
Absolutely true!!!!! Confession of a former knife nut; I used to be a knife snob. Up to and including a collection of Randall's and other customs. They I grew up. Had a mid life awakening, and sold them all off and no more pocket snobbery pocket jewelry. Now with an Opinel number 9 in a belt pouch and a small Swiss Army knife in the pocket I'm all set for what the day will bring. Much over 20 dollars is just money wasted. For fixed blade use, I have a Green River knife in a self made leather sheet that cleans fish and game as well as or better than my Randall small hunter.
Yep! Bought a Benchmade Bugout when I first bought a knife thinking that more expensive equaled better. Since then my Civivi’s have been my go to knives, specifically Ben Petersen designs like the Sendy and Baby Banter. These are the two knives I rotate between while the Benchmade sits in the drawer. The Benchmade is decent, but I have found the Civivi’s to be better tools and actually better quality than the Benchmade.
If your EDC knife (or gun) is for self-defense purposes and you have to use it, it will be confiscated as evidence and may or may not be returned to you. Why risk giving up your custom “anything” when a utilitarian grade tool will do the job just fine?
I have a 7$ edc folding knife. It gets the job done just like any other edc knife.
I purchased a Benchmade Osborne with carbon fiber scales, full size and I paid $300 for it. Was using it at work and left it on a workbench overnight, luckily it was still there the next day. Needless to say I ended up selling it and now I have a Civivi that I carry.

@@donhagner4845 😂 facts
You are absolutely correct. Knives are tools that are meant to be used. My budget knives get used all the time. The expensive ones typically do not because I'm almost afraid to use them. My $50 Spyderco is my favorite EDC because it works well and it won't break the bank if I have to replace it.
@@garthtimmins2852 utilitarian mindset ✊🏽 I like it
I got some extra money for a birthday present a couple years ago and went and bought an expensive {for me} $200 titanium handled knife. Like you said.. it turned into an expensive fidget toy as I never used it to actually cut anything, just flipping the blade out a few times and pocketing it. Then a month later it fell out of my pocket when i was leaning over to fix a tire on a atv. I noticed as soon as I got home, but it was late so I went out {hour drive} the next morning early and someone had already went to it and picked it up. There was about 1/2 of snow and i could see the foot prints. Never again will I spend that much on a knife. I'm very happy with my $40ish range of knifes that I use often.
