    Hey Alex, im a graphic designer who is learning web design an i was wondering if i want to offer high converting websites as a service like CRO is it worth going down the ux rabbit hole and do user interviews and analysis tracking and all this stuff or just get a solid understanding of ux principles and just simply apply them? Is it even worth doing conversion rate optimization as a service at that point?

    • @designthescenes
      @designthescenes 20 годин тому

      I think it is for next few years, later I don't know. Worth learning all AI tools available. But you dont have to go all deep balls into UX design. You need to have a good eye for design and then use CRO principles. CRO first, UI after. I worked with CRO specialists and when combined with a good UI designer things work well.

      @designthescenes ok another question im based in a developing country where design standards are very low and most people tend not to value good design that much which means they look for cheap affordable work because of an economical crisis im talking $20 for a logo as a popular pricing and i want to position myself in the market as a higher end more expensive option with global availabilty due to my attention to detail and me taking graphic design seriously and passionately therefore how can i craft my first portfolio to kickstart my career in a way where i gradually climb from cheap local clients to higher end clients till i reach the “big brands” since cheap client work might be an obstacle for me to craft solid portfolio pieces with great presentation since they cheap out on investing for a good photographer for example or not take the work process seriously from their end if its a collab project Thank you

      It's indeed hard to find a good source to learn and implement design. I think it all comes down to seeing someone working, iterating, fixing. Seeing the process. Then you should do that and get a critique. But, where can you do that if you don't go to a proper school? That's the question.

    Sorry Alex this it's gonna be long, but want the people to understand one thing.*** ''The whole point of the solution I've provided is to skip the standard presentation of visual elements of the tech industry. If you look at all big brands, tech companies, marketing agencies, etc. - nobody is using stock illustrations of their visual elements, especially cheap ''Freepik 3Dish illustrations''. Companies are evolving to a so-called organic, natural design and visual style in which presenting people (could be stock imagery / footage, or in-house photography of employees) is the key asset of being organic, original and unique. In that way, we are showing people that the company is human-centric, people-driven and has a unique culture. This is what a designer is presenting to the vast audience out there. Imagine if Apple would post on each and every advertising campaign millions of apple illustrations or footage of apple trees. From a design viewpoint, people would ask themselves ''are these dudes selling apples on the market or what?'' With all due respect, all of your (********) to this point are not developed and designed in the way I explained above. Things are changing and evolving in the design industry and if you're doing what the majority of brands are doing in the space, most likely you're not gonna stand out, whether if it's a simple instagram post or a product design. Being human centric, with as less possible elements on the canvas, gives you a freedom of experimenting through the whole space. To conclude, it doesn't matter if I'm gonna be your designated designer or not, what matter is in which directing you're going. Aesthetics and concept matter a lot and that human approach, clean image and icon approach can lead you to be consistent, presentable and yet recognizable.'' *** this is a message I sent to a client, they needed me for a long-term design project. guess what happened? they rejected me even though I was their most qualified designer. Why I have sent this? EXACTLY because of the stories you're mentioning in the video. P.S. hope they won't see this message LOL

    i love your design advice videos, i really think your channel is the best and most honest when it comes to graphic design. i'd like to see you make a video that explores more on why design isn't art, maybe make a video dedicated to it. it's a topic i've heavily thought about myself since im taking graphic design classes at a university i'm in and they tend to treat the design classes like art in a non-realistic approach that doesn't really prepare you for an actual design job or get an insight what the industry is like. i'm also taking a bunch of non-design classes, like modern art, art history, and other BS classes that has absolutely nothing to do with graphic design whatsoever which has made me question the value of these classes.

      Designs should have a practical brief - for example, I need an ergonomic remote control for a TV set that appeals to young women - it should be made from sustainable materials and lightweight... etc etc.. your designing for the client so design principles should not get in the way of the design though should be in the back of your mind.

      Another solution is to start drawing what's in your mind first THEN you judge them by the principle THEN you had corrections THEN go back to evaluating the results until you are satisfied or run out of options or time (deadlines) ITERATION is key, I can go up to hundreds of sketch before finding something great, also you don't have to answer everything at once, only one or two considerations at a time, that's why most people do sketch for composition, then do values, and then add colors. Generally start with functions and general shapes, then finish with aesthetics and details. It's just easier to find what doesn't works than what works, so you start with what doesn't until you eliminate them and corner triangulate what works.

    It’s funny I’ve been commenting on other videos of yours regarding computers. The hard truth about design is that you can perform with such a low-configuration computer and still do amazing work. Personally I use MacBook Air M2 13.6” 8 GB RAM 512 SSD for Graphic Design & Motion Design (After Effects, 2D Motion Graphics mostly). Using the full Adobe CC Suite for professional work, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects and never got a headache. A better computer won’t make you a better designer, it’s the inspiration & conceptualization of ideas. :)

    To everyone about the SSD not slowing down your computer, the information is widely available and it is a fact, just from a quick search: "SSD will run slower if you fill it up. According to a survey, the write speed of an SSD will obviously slow down when the used space accounts for more than 75%. What's worse, your PC may slow down and get stuck when you're playing games or running some boot applications." Don't cut costs in here, go for the 512GB SSD or 1TB if you can, important for your computer to run smoothly, and also convinience of just using one device, external SSDs can be lost, or can fail.

      The MacBooks don’t have hard drives they have SSD’s. And no more storage does not make your MacBook faster. Hooking up an external SSD via Thunderbolt 4/5 would still be performant. Also if your internal SSD breaks you’re screwed as you cannot get them replaced. Better to have an external SSD for projects or even an external hard drive for cold storage of projects you’ve finished.

    • @designthescenes

      @@timjanssen3966 Correction: SSD, not HDD. And the same to you, fill your SSD to the max, tell me later. @@designthescenesI understand your point but from a cost perspective it’s not worth it. I can get 2TB of storage for what Apple charges for 255GB. A better solution is to only load programs/apps on the internal storage and work off of the external storage. With thunderbolt speeds it is more than sufficient.

For heavy files like video, I would still opt for cloud and not external storage, simply because I had many failed ones and online saves the day, but that's personal. It does work on M1 (but too slow) so on M4 most certainly and if you go for the macmini 24gb m4pro, it should run very nicely. If you want exclusively 3d, then better consider alternatives on the windows world, specially for rendering. Another thing you could do is to use a mac, and render on a render farm, which is what many 3d designers I know do.

Do you see brands working directly with individuals instead of firms /studios?

That's not to say I don't work late if required, but that's certainly an exception. Saying 'no' is one of the most important design skills you can have. Don't make the mistake like I did. Get the 1TB SSD. Not only because of the ammount, but it's also faster (read and write) than the basic 256 gb. Also get 16 GB of RAM, if you can even 32 GB. When dealing with huge smart objects, low storage and low RAM will sometimes disable to paste that same smart object into a different project. External SSD is also recommended. 512 internal and 512 external (with 1 TB of iCloud) - will be enough for the next few years. But 1TB internal SSD is my recommendation.

    How much design is too much design? I've been learning web design for a couple of years now but pivoted to front-end development in the last 6 months. I have to say I love mixing my design and illustrative skills with technical skills in web development projects, but it gets difficult to balance between both. In your opinion, what should a professional of any field know to be able to incorporate good design practices in their workflow? Is it better to specialize in one skill, or do you think it's achievable with modern tools (for knowledge management & assistance, not replacing any key ability)? I guess what I want to ask is: Is it possible to be a designer who codes? thank you for the content! 🫂🫂

    • @designthescenes
      @designthescenes 2 місяці тому

      Absolutely! I code myself but entry level. Most of my site work is customized by myself. I honestly think being a front end developer is great. This is best of both worlds. Developers miss many details because they don't design, a front end designer can be a great addition to a team. I do love the satisfaction I get from coding something, but its too much work and I get frustrated often since testing browsers is always a real pain. But yeah I think you found good niche, go ahead and stay strong. As for your question, which is a nice one and might make it to a video, how much design is too much design? well remember this quote from Milton Glaser: "Just enough is more."
