Did I sell my 4Runner for an old Jeep Wrangler YJ?
I want to build a Rock Crawler out of this 1992 Jeep Wrangler YJ. I'm going to start with some modest upgrades to get it up and running. Then someday 1 tons and 40s. Check out the build along the way!

1992 Ford Bronco - Caughlin Ranch Stuck in the Snow
The Bronco is a much better product over all.
For about $8000 for the supercharger alone I'd say hell no. I could buy a whole new used v8 off road truck and beat the hell out of it and not feel bad. Also you are just making a slow vehicle (We have a 2021 modified TRD Off Road, which we LOVE) a little less slow. I'd rather get a 1st Gen Raptor for about the $16000 area and have a beast. There are many options vs. an $8000+ supercharger. Bad buy. Just my opinion, it's your money
I don’t necessarily disagree that it might not be the best purchase. But if you love the 5th Gen and will keep it forever, then it makes more sense. Falls back to the “to each their own”. Thanks for watching and the feedback 🤘🏻
to be honest, you need an adjustable trackbar to achieve a perfectly centered wheel side to side clearance
I was thinking it would be best with the BOTCK. Have you done one?
Great video , I have a 2024 SR5 and plan on towing a 17’ fiberglass travel trailer in the next year, already installed th medium duty kit from OME and went to a 275 tire, plan on getting the red arc break controller as well up in the air about the re gear??
How tall is the 275 tire? 275 is just the width.
sweet!
Great project! I am very happy with my 95 YJ. I highly recommend the tie rod flip with "one ton" tie rod ends instead of using a drop pitman arm. Also, get the steering box brace. In the rear, using the MORR shock mount relocators and moving the lower shock mounts to the axle has kept the shocks much safer from rocks. These small details will result in a much more reliable Jeep.
What settings did you guys use for long range
Honestly I'm not sure. The more I learn, the more I realize FRS frequency is pretty weak. We probably did not have them at the optimal settings
You also prematurely ruined your trans by flushing it you NEVER flush them.
I'd like to know more. Why do you never flush them? Transmission fluid changes are very common. Thanks
@DBCoffroad there's a huge difference between flushing the transmission and changing the fluid so which is it?
The video you took is fantastic! We have some car related items. Do you accept sponsored products?
Good call with sye No sway bar needed! Love my 87 YJ Nothing fancy just fun
How does this Jeep have NO Rust 😮
Western desert he mentioned it was from NM -- My 94 YJ came from a mix of CA, AZ, & then MT (where I got it in 2017) It has zero rust frame or body. Me being originally from NE US couldn't believe it. $5K later it was mine.
@@jfisher2370 amazing
Yee Especially with that lift get rid of that track bar Cant wait to fallow this build
Thanks!
Cool build bro. Keep it coming.
Thanks!
It looks like the Jeep has the fuel pump cutout. I did it on my Cj7 a few months back.
Yea it does. It's covered with duct tape right now haha. I need to get a GenRight cover to clean it up.
I recommend people with older Jeeps, if they can, to take the top off and lay the windshield down. Make sure to secure it. That makes you feel like you're sitting on it instead of in it and just, to me anyway, is extremely satisfying.
I tried it for a bit without the windshield. It's fun but I like having the bug shield in front of me. haha
Adams or Tom Woods driveshaft for a replacement driveshaft since you already have the SYE. You will need the driveshaft before you do the swap, both of their websites explain how/what to measure to get the correct length. Oh, put the lift on first, that will change your measurement.
Thanks for the info! I appreciate it.
Go synthetic line. It’s safer and lighter. I run the badlands apex 12,000
I agree. I also have the Badlands 12k on my 4runner 🤘🏻. I was going to just buy synthetic line for this winch to see how that goes.
Id delete the sway bar and track bar yesterday
Haha agreed. I wanted to do some flex testing with some ramps to see the difference first.
@@DBCoffroad make a video on it if you do pls!
I've been building Jeeps and other 4x4"s for the passed 25 years and my most favorite rig to upfit is a unmolested YJ like the one you've inherited, lucky guy! looks like your pops did a great job maintaining that great old Jeep. I will definitely be following your build.
Thanks! Yea I'm really looking forward to tinkering with this Jeep.
Towing at 75 mph ?, wow !. Pushing the tire speed limit arent you ?
Its for Science though...
Those old 5 spoke steel wheels use to be my go to for my Jeeps. But they have a recessed inner lip that catches mud and dirt and quickly throws them out of balance. The "Sawtooth" steelies like you have on the front are my current go to. They look good to me and don't have that inner lip that catches junk.
Yea I noticed the "mud pocket" as well. The sawtooth one on the front is actually the spare so it's the only one I have for now.
@@DBCoffroad you can get refurbed sawtooth wheels for about 75 bucks each.
Looks like a great project coming up! Do it for Dad!
Thanks!
Question: My 4runner with 33's, geared with 456's overland build with roof top tent constantly hunts gears or stays downshifted when cruise or trying to maintain 70-80 mph. Does the supercharger fix that where it can cruise in top gear without downshifting all the time? If so it's worth the upgrade to me.
No it does not. I think the downfall to the 5th Gen 4Runner is the 5 Speed transmission. The transmission programming is not affected at all by the Magnuson tune. Yes there is more power, but the transmission still will hunt gears. If I were to do it over again, I would try the Overland Tailor Tuning before a Supercharger. They claim to do transmission tuning as well. overlandtailor.com/
how would gearing to 4.56 affect the transmission shift points to gain more low to mid end torq
The supercharger adds enough power that the lower gearing to 4.88 was maybe too deep. 4.56 would allow highway speeds to cruise at a lower RPM. The 4Runner isn't going to jump off the line with either gearing. 4.56 is just more practical I think.
?? Did you regear for all that weight and 35'
Yes. 4.88s
@@DBCoffroad Did you know where I can get 4.10 gears I have a 2021 4Runner but I only see 4.56- 4.88 . Oh thank you for the answer 👍
Just put a Dr KDSS BOTCK on my 5th Gen 4runner. ironman 3"/2" lift, adj. panhard bar. Looking forward to less highway shudder. BOTCK Kit was very easy to install.
Awesome!
Tire measurements are cleared created by men. :)
HAHA!
The 4runner isn't a race car, so why so many people can't accept the 4runner for what it is.
Or.... just have fun with your car however you want?
I have 2yrs and 18k miles on my Magnuson now, I’m at 30k miles now on a 21 4Runner. Ever had a dense puff of white smoke from the exhaust on a start before? I had it happen to me 4 times now. Twice while truck was parked slightly inclined and twice while parked flat in the garage and a parking lot. All times not cold started (first start of the day).
Yikes. I have not had that issue and I’m at 33k miles. I’ve heard a blown head gasket is the most common issue for white smoke. Probably worth taking to a mechanic to diagnose.
How is your coolant level? I ran a supercharger on a 3rz and after about 12k miles, it started doing what you described. Solution was a stand alone ecu. Wish I had it from the beginning but LCE doesn't emphasize this....
@@99yota30 coolant level is normal, hasn’t gone down in the reservoir. It’s only happened 4 times.
@@DBCoffroad yea I’ve read that too. Coolant level is fine not burning any since install.
what about without a link?? would it make a difference??
It doesn’t seem to make a difference. I wouldn’t take the sway bars off the 4Runner. It’s already too “boaty” feeling with sway bars attached.
If the rear kicks up, that would indicate not enough rebound damping not too much which is what you stated in the video about the fox’s during the jump
Thank you for the correction. 👍🏻
I want a 4Runner bad! But because of the lack of power. I’m gonna continue saving and get a GX
Which GX?
I like the look of the Bronco, but for $50k+ this is unacceptable. I'd give them 3 shots to fix it, after that, I want my $50k back!
It is an unfortunate reality of the Broncos
Can the actual 35s fit then?!
They’ll fit.
you changed your stock tires that will effect the dyno.
How so?
@@DBCoffroad your changing to a larger diameter tire the axle driving that tire doesn’t change so the resistance on the entire drive train is effected because it takes more torque to spin that larger tire, put stock tires on and see if your Dyno results change. the vehicle was designed to used with those stock tires so any factory Dyno numbers will be effected by changing to larger tires.
@@yellowjacket588 I appreciate the response. Most people just tell me I did it wrong but don't explain why. I tried to create the same parameters for the Stock dyno run and the Supercharged dyno run. Both have all the same equipment, tires, gears, etc except for the Supercharger. The focus I had for this comparison was mainly for modified 4runners with suspension, tires, bumpers etc. Thank you for the input.
There should be a metal top option for those who want a full size Bronco; but have no desire to remove the roof panels.
Yes! I totally agree. It’s personal preference but I’d prefer fixed metal roof. But, nothings perfect
❤😂😅 love it 😍
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Towing with my 2017 SR5 4Runner actually does exceptional well. I always heard 4Runners are build on a truck chasis. I tell you what having a performance towing ECM tune has defiantly help trendmously with pulling even my heavy RV travel trailer at 21 feet approximately 8,000 lbs. I know I know you will say the 4Runner are only rated for 5,000 lbs towing capacity. I disagree and have mine nicely setup to tow and handle the weight. #ECM Tune, Airlift Airbag and SumoSpring SSR-623-47 | SumoSprings Rear soon to installed. I even have a electric brake controlled installed Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Electric Brake Controller Control Module Trailer Brakes Towing Kit Box System Truck Car SUV 90195
That’s not a trailer it’s a tent
My mistake.
What size tires did you add halfway through this video? 275 or 285?
285/70R17. About a 32.5”ish
Even if the phone disconnects the brakes still work based on the last settings
I figured there was a fail safe. Thanks!
Did you add a full exhaust/cai?
Magnuson doesn’t recommend a CAI. They said exhaust is fine. Just haven’t spent the money on exhaust.
Could i just get aftermarket coils to solve the weight issue?
Yes, you could change the coil rate for both shocks.
I love this bronco but this issue in a brand new car is unacceptable? I can imagine when the car get older, the problem is gonna be worst.
Agreed
the transmission cooler is about all your missing. nice build and great info. thanks
Yea definitely need to add one. Thanks!
Thank you, and after watching this, it confirms that I'll put my money into my other 4Runner modifications first, then come back and decide if it's worth the bang for the buck.
Glad it was helpful!
Is there anything that I would need to do to my 4Runner after getting 5100’s 2014 SR5 4x2
35" tires are way too big without other mods. I have been using 275/70/17 for 4 years now and I have not had a single issue. I have taken my 4runner all over the place too. Monache Meadows, White Rim, Grand Canyon, various trails in Utah, Death Valley, Lippencott pass, Alabama Hills, Funnel Lake, Azna Borrego, blah blah...these are not extreme trails like the rubicon but they are trails that demand high clearance and 4x4. Ditch the 35s brother. The 275s look a little small but its just optics. They perform great.
37 sec to get to 60 mph ? I thought the 4R could tow
It can, just not fast uphill.
@@DBCoffroad From the videos I've seen it looks like it is rated for 5000 lb but most people say don't go above 3000 lb. That is fine, I'm only looking to tow a few snow mobiles anyway.
Looks like it's going to pop a wheelie. A bluetooth brake controller for the trailer. Is that safe ? Why doesn't the 4 Runner have a brake controller ? I thought it was rated at 5000 lb.
Bluetooth was temporary. I'd be worried about it possibly disconnecting though. RedArc makes the wired one which is the best option. It is rated at 5000 lbs. Some manufacturers just don't have a factory brake controller even though they rate their vehicles to tow.
@@DBCoffroad Good to know. I'm sure there is an after-market add-on. If I get a 4 Runner I would buy used, get two-tone leather seats, a 14 inch infotainment system, and birds-eye-view. The base vehicle is awesome but the interior is not up to modern standards. It doesn't cost that much to mod it though to get what you want. In 2024 people want to get in, plop their iPhone down on the wireless charger, and wirelessly connect to Apple CarPlay. With the 4 Runner you have to plug it in which wears out the lightning connector on your phone plus ugly cables all over the place.
