How I'm Grading My First Short Film
A little tutorial on the grade behind my first short film, which will be done in a week or so hopefully! I've discovered using curves gives you so much control and make it almost effortless to add subtle undertones, so that's what we'll be going over today: How to create teal shadows whilst keeping everything else clean.

How To Get "The Batman" Look - Davinci Resolve
Переглядів 1,1 тис.6 днів тому
This is inspired by one of the most beautifully shot films of recent time (in my opinion of course) and we go through the look development of a few scenes and try to recreate it! Practice footage is here too! Make sure to go under clip attributes in the media page after you import it to resolve, change the pixel ratio to 1.33 as this was shot on anamorphic. Chromaticity Diagram Explained - Why is it useful as a colourist?
Переглядів 19417 днів тому
This video is about the chromaticity diagram and vector scope in DaVinci Resolve, and should help explain why colour grading in larger colour spaces such as DWG are superior to Rec.709 for example. This topic is suuuper broad in scope so if you are interested check out the links below as I can't cover all of colour theory in a single video! Nonetheless, I hope you learnt something new! Today I'm showing you exactly what goes on when you grade in DaVinci Wide Gammut Intermediate as opposed to Rec.709 and why it is ALWAYS a good idea to grade in this colour space. Thank you so much for stopping by and let me know your thoughts down below, if you have any requests for future videos! Thanks for stopping by :)

Good tutorials Oscar. Just came across some of your stuff, keep sharing the knowledge - Danyul :)
Thank you Danyul that really means a lot! Appreciate it very much :))
please make the teal and orange as soon as possible an easy one and a hard one please. loved the video by the way
Will do man! Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed 🫶😎
they shot the batman at 200 iso, so basically under exposed the movie. that adds to the contrast as well.
Man I didn’t know that, explains how they have such clean shadows.
A Seven grading would be nice - I love the movie! Thanks for this!
@1:20 Reference shot is green and yellow, so is your shot, if bring up black point and reduce exposure and white point, that should be it. I know its good to start with a netral image but you already shot the look in camera 😅
Well, of course it’s very subjective, but, doesn’t look at all like the Batman look… Not even a little bit. The look is not just the color grading. It’s the camera. It’s the environment. There’s so much more to the look than simply color grading. And whatever camera they’re using it’s probably 16 bit depth.
Yeah us budget filmmakers can only hope to get so close, but agree that grading is only a small piece of the puzzle, you would need the same lighting, atmosphere (haze etc.) and set design to achieve a 1:1 look
I've been looking for this for a while, but others youtubers like to suggest one of those 300$ add on, finally someone explains it from scratch, good job! could you try one from the Great Budapest Hotel?
Eyy glad I could help my dude thank you so much for the comment! Good shout as well that’s a beautiful film, I’ll see about making a vid on it.
I realized that colors, light and angle is not everything. A look is also the model in the video. A normal guy with curly hair (maybe yourself?) have something in missing even if its ONLY about the grading. Often when UA-camrs compare their graded shot to the hoolywood shot everything is perfect but the model gives the overall impact of even the colors. It feels not right to have him in this dark look compared to a creepy jokerface. And you already took elementes to emphasize the grading. You dont took a bright sunlight yachparty shot and tried to make it batman, no you took the subtrain station because it fits, but you stopped by the model and thought that this dont care, but even this care in grading. Maybe next time ask a acting friend or wear a costume to make it even closer on the psychological feel of the grading
Hey man yeah I definitely agree, lighting and colouring is only a small part of the story and ultimately your talent/actor is going to play a big role. For this tutorial I just wanted to focus on the colour grading aspect so that’s what I did, I wasn’t too concerned about the physical appearance of my character as ultimately in this clip I’m not trying to tell a full story. Hope that makes sense!
@ I know! And you did a good job. I learned something
@@LeonFuruThank you man I’m glad to hear! Really appreciate it
Can I not just set the timeline Color space to dwg and go out with a single cst as rec.709?
You would have to work in a colour managed project to make that work, Darren Mostyn has 2 incredible videos on CSTs and colour management, I’d recommend checking them out for more info. I just prefer to work with 2 CSTs, one input and one output and go from there👍
Amazing video bro. Can you try one for fight club?
Thank you man! And yeah that’s a good shout, beautiful film. I’ll do it soon
Well explained 🎉 Thank you ❤
can you add more video for the practice footage thank you
30!? 😱
Thanks, so if we have rec 709 profile set to shoot im camera, its not possibile to work on davinci wide gamut ?
Very clear, thank you
This is a gem thank you for sharing! Subscribed
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed :)
keren .. , thank u , please grading tail and orange tut
Coming soon my dude! Thanks for the comment :)
Wow this is mind blowing thank you for this great video
Hey that means a lot thank you! Glad you enjoyed 😁
0:49 Using Rec709 as Timeline color space while working in DWG with those CSTs means that your tools will not behave correctly.
What is the correct way to do it?
@@SebasCelisOficial as far as I know it would be correct to set the tl color space to whatever log your cam recorded in (if any) and then transform it into DWG. Example : Slog 3 input - transform to DWG - work in DWG - transform to Rec709/Rec709a
@@SebasCelisOficial You set Timeline color space to DWG, since it's what the first CST is converting to.
without selling Luts! 🙂 Thank you!!!
Haha glad you enjoyed man 😅
Subscribed! On Christmas day.
Amazing content. Subscribed!
Thank you bro appreciate it!
Thanks for the video! Does that mean you place all other nodes between these two CST nodes?
No worries! Yes that’s correct, then all your grading is done in the wide colour space of DWG 👍
Driving : the hidden power of cars Turn of tonemapping on your IDT breh
And what’s the diferencie of editing between DWG and Arri Color Space?
I’ll make a video soon about it ;)
Thanks a lot for these videos, I'm very new to editing and your knowledge and pacing has been very helpful for me to learn.
So glad to hear that man thanks for the comment! There will be more on the way for sure, happy to help :)
can we see an example on a real video? some log footage from a normal camera let’s say canon log or s log 3 and compare there.. i realize now it won’t be any different as long as you’re editing within a log colorspace the logarithmic operations responsible for compressing the highlights will just give them the smoother roll off , and DWG would simply widen the space even more
Yeah exactly that’s right, on a regular video you would just notice clipping happen much faster and you wouldn’t be able to push your highlights and shadows as much, but in dwg you can stretch it to your hearts content 😎
fantastic video. I am a enthusiast but i really have to admit that this whole changing in color spaces… I did not really understand - but i have braw anyways so that is in wide gamut anyways right?
Hey man appreciate that a lot, I agree the whole concept of colour spaces can get very confusing and most people just say, don’t worry about it and grade in DWG and you’re chilling. Regarding raw footage I actually don’t know much about it at all as I’ve never graded it before so can’t really help there I’m sorry :/
The difference you're seeing is due to da-vinci's tone mapping. Switching "Colour-space"s is just a 3x3 matrix transform. And it will not add a curve to the waveform. Look into what Linear and log encoding are, but mainly look into what image formation is. Hitchhikers guide to digital colour is a great place to start, get to question 13 at-least.
Hey that’s very interesting to hear ok! I’ll take a look man thanks for the comment, always looking to learn new stuff 👍
Awesome video!
love it! bro can you please send the practice footage so that we can edit with you
For sure bro I’ve added it to the description for you to download from google drive 👍
@Oscar_Montoya_Film thank man i just subscribed really good work keep it up
@@AchievingZenithsThat means a lot man I really appreciate it! 🫶
Nice❤❤❤
The part where you talked about switching the gamma to linear; why is that better than using the offset wheel?
Very good question, it’s to do with the fact that changes made in linear gamma are more direct and it’s literally shifting the entire image to whatever colour you chose, but doing it linearly. In Gamma 2.4 or DaVinci Intermediate the offset changes aren’t linear, there’s a mathematical difference between how changes are made in these gammas/colour spaces. It’s kinda hard for me to explain as you can see but hope this makes sense 🤣 also big reason why linear is good for balancing is if u have VFX from after effects or other software, linear balancing will reflect more realistic lighting changes than other gammas 👍
ua-cam.com/video/opJ2hvUfpBM/v-deo.htmlsi=wlL3zcWOaxVKgwF4 check this out bro from 07:30 onwards he talks about linear balancing 😎
Thanks for the video!!
