Gardening and growing orchids in New Zealand
New Zealand
Приєднався 18 сер 2014
I live in New Zealand, and have done since Sept 2005, but I'm from the South West of England originally. I love all things green and my lovely dogs. My orchid journey started at the end of 2016 when I accidentally managed to get a couple of Phalaenopsis to re-spike, and so started my passion for orchids.
I have another channel where I talk about my weight loss journey:

What's going on in the Winter garden?

Why do I like a Winter garden? The fantastic success of one flax bush (turns into fifteen!) gifted by our wonderful neighbour. And a little chat about some future plans.
Mavis and Mooriel bully Rooroo
Переглядів 714 роки тому
Mavis and Mooriel our two pregnant heifers normally love to be groomed. However they were a bit non-plussed when Rooroo followed John into the paddock and tried to help out. Rooroo is a Huntaway cross and it is in their nature to round up stock. The girls were having none of it, and Rooroo got a sharp reminder of who's boss from Mavis.
Getting Phalaenopsis to re-spike , 87% success rate !

Quick update on my Phallys. I think I know now how to guarantee new blooms. Out of 31 plants I have 8 in spike , with 19 more coming. This is a first attempt at using my phone to do a video - hope it's not too shaky ...
This happened after a cold chill

Update on my phalenopsis which had a chill in a cool bedroom, before moving back into our lounge.

Where do you buy the root training pots?
Awesome video thanks.
Lovely garden, the bird song is amazing as well. I almost moved to NZ myself in 2002.
this never works
That does help thank you as you are the first I.ve seen to drill in the sides.
Try rat wire, smaller openings.
nice video thank you very much. whats your email please?
Hey, how about antique slightly fragile pots (i just bought a bowl and jug for a succulent arrangement)
You need a drill bit in the centre of your cutter
awesome garden ❤
wondered why you took a cutting in January but I can see you are in New Zealand but sound british. so UK cuttings taken around August would you say? Thanks for the info.
So, after the plants have rooted in that box, it will be nearing winter time, or? What happens then? Can they be repotted in larger pots and left through the winter outside in that same box or in a greenhouse? (I live in Norway and here we have a fairly long winter with short days from November through February). Theoretically I should do the cutting in July. Thanks for an interesting video, btw!
Can they grow in a container?
the water helps to stop the bit from getting hot
what soil mix please. These are divine
Beautiful garden 👌👌 New subscriber From Arunachal Exotic Flowers and Pots 🌿🥀🌱
Lol tell him to drill a little bit on an angle to get the bit in
Soak your pot or just squirt some water on it before you drill and turn the drill bit at a 45゚ angle to start the hole before straightening. reate a groove that will prevent the drill bit from jumping around
You need to blow your nose. It is very annoying all that sniffing.
this is neat ! going to try come spring
This lady - ua-cam.com/video/hqBVeB2N0Eg/v-deo.html&feature=emb_title - has a nice tip to start the drilling :)
What growing zone are you in? I want to learn to propagate flowers. I live in U.S. in zone 5.
Hi. I tried growing them from seed and had about a 5% success rate. After a lot of research I discovered that the seed need light to sprout. I took a tray of damp seed raising mix and made "grooves" in it, about 6mm wide and 6mm deep. I spaced the seed about 5mm apart. DO NOT COVER the seed. Keep the seed raising mix damp. I got about 95% success rate.
Goon at a 45 degree angle No spinning
Soaking your unglazed pots in water for 24 hours before drilling, will make this process much easier, and you’re a lot less likely to crack the pot. If you have a glazed pot with no drainage holes, and the bottom of the pot is unglazed, you can use the same soaking method before drilling your drainage holes. If you can’t find diamond drill bits, masonry drill bits also work well on the soaked pots. Whichever drill bit you’re using, be careful not to apply too much pressure while drilling.
Thank you for taking the time to comment your tips ☺️
Perfect. Kiwis get it done. Good on him.
This is what I was looking for after trawling internet for right video.
Beautiful !
Why you have to make big holes On top side of the pot anyways so ..........
Were you from Cornwall originally? You sound as though you're from Cornwall, England.
Why do you keep calling it wire? It's nylon fishing line!
I've just been given a red hippeastrum as a present, great tips for me in this video! Where it's best to cut the flower once it's done blooming? Do I need to wait for it to go dry like for orchids? Do I cut the whole stem? Thanks!
The drops of rain which stay on the leaves of this plant are beautiful too. They look like mercury.
Beautiful
You couldn’t get this sort of garden in England your garden is beautiful there’s good an bad behaviour in nz too but more good than bad enjoy
how to stop the soil from getting of the pot?
This is so useful, thank you for breaking down the steps!
Hi, what moss are you using?
So lucky to have the red fountain ive been wanting it for years and cant find it
fullsupport from djpinknoise ..
Someone tell this woman its rhododendron NOT rhododendrums ..soo annoying!!
I have pink ones that come back each year- a surprise to me every time.
could you please say what time of year this should be done ?
I think I’ll move in to your place ( very nice)😃 great video, John must be a right laugh 😉
Hi How did the rhododendron cuttings work out?
the first minute was excellent - short, concise and no waffling - unfortunately wifey decided to make hubby repeat everything at great laborious repetetive detail !! I would like to have known at what temperature the plastic box should be kept in - an appropriate place outsside ? temperature etc night and day - as I live in the UK
Fantastic Video thanks for the taking the time to explain it to a novice in a very basic fashion.
If you put the pots into a tub of luke warm water for an hour or so, the drill will go through much easier. But then, before putting the fasteners in and fasten them, the pots should be dried all up again 🙏🏼
Great garden paths!
Hi , I have the same problem , I pulled one out of the ground and it doesn't seem to be root rot , did you find out what it was?
