The Rendezvous | Kent Monkman
Cree artist Kent Monkman discusses The Rendezvous, a series of paintings named for the spring gatherings that took place in the wilderness of the Rocky Mountains in the early to mid nineteenth century. The wild and boisterous scenes at these gatherings inspired Monkman to depict the Rendezvous as a site where Western social barriers took influence from Indigenous acceptance of sexual freedoms and gender fluidity.

Conceived for The Metropolitan Museum of Art's Great Hall, Monkman’s mistikôsiwak (Wooden Boat People) comprises two monumental paintings that feature many references to European and American works in The Met collection. The title includes the Cree word for the French, which Monkman uses here to refer to all Europeans who colonized Turtle Island, an Indigenous name for North America. Both comp...

Переглядів 9 тис.5 років тому
Kent Monkman’s monumental painting Miss Chief’s Wet Dream explores the Guswenta or Two Row Wampum Treaty, a Haudenosaunee-Dutch alliance formed in 1613. An homage to French history painting, the maritime scene mythologizes early relations established between Indigenous peoples and European settlers on Turtle Island. Painted at a scale of 144" x 288" (12 feet by 24 feet), Miss Chief’s Wet Dream ...

In The Deluge an allegorical flood of settler cultures displaces Indigenous people from the lands to which they belong. Переглядів 11 тис.5 років тому
Another Feather In Her Bonnet-a surprise performance by Miss Chief Eagle Testickle and Jean Paul Gaultier, presented at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts-represents the symbolic union of two artists who have come together to challenge ideas of cultural appropriation. On September 8, 2017, Miss Chief, Kent Monkman’s shape-shifting, time-travelling, gender-fluid alter ego, and French couturier Jea...

You artists are all sensitive about your shyt....lol
That was beautiful. Thank you Kent and the studio.
this is fantastic!!!
So powerful! Good job
i wonder how much that massive canvas would have cost
The sexual objectification of the man whos plays Romanticism made me very uncomfortable.
pretty cool ngl
I always watch this to cheer me up. <3
Good to hear about you, just learned about your works in the news! Keep it up! I'm an artist myself, trying to imagine what colonialism looks like as well, right now I've painted mostly environmental issues.
So funny. Love it.
Adding this public face and education to all of the history and current practice of colonialism is more important and essential than ever.
Damn dude, sorry to hear about your fractured ego. Hope you get better soon </3 Maybe as you continue to grow the tradition of Romantic painting, you'll also be able to grow into a mature person and realize that other forms of art are just as valid as yours. And as much as you like to consider modern art the "death of painting" and art in general, maybe you'll eventually learn that it actually owes a lot of its technique directly to lessons learned from the many historical movements that came before. Right now, this seems like it could have been written by Ben Shapiro, who wows crowds with his mediocre violin playing while arbitrarily trying to redefine what music is so he can claim that rap isn't part of the form, despite owing a lot more to earlier works than he gives credit. I love your paintings; but, come on. Modernism isn't some death knoll for art, it's the continuation - just as Romanticism was the continuation of movements before its inception, despite outcries from critics saying that it was throwing away those older traditions.
I'm sorry to hear you can't take a joke. Hope you feel better soon aswell </3 haha
@@Hannah-hq9xs I'll take a joke when it's in good faith, but this reeks of the same vibe I get from those videos where some neckbeard walks up to his piano and makes fun of hip hop as a genre by playing a "cover" of one repeating note. Different styles, and different artists within any style, are going to make pieces that speak in different ways; measuring them all against an arbitrary standard from one particular style is just dishonest.
@@zozzy4630 Actually I shouldn’t have said it was a joke. Becuase the video was actually making a point by Kent Monkman’s comments about the male gaze and how romanticism paintings were depicting first nations peoples as savages. The relationship he had with the character wasn’t all about the negatives of other art it was actually a complicated history of art and first nations. Indigenous peoples were depicted in older paintings as a dying race and vanishing, that's also why he makes a point to saying art is dead.
The music detracts from the video and commentary.. Great painting...
It's interesting to see the massive preparation and planning that goes into a project like this. Must get costly with all the models and extra help involved? With all that help do the other artists get credited at all? I know the conceptualization and direction are all Kent though. Just wondering.
Wow, so powerful
Good Morning Miss Chief; I am very impressed by the way you get your point across in your paintings. I was made aware of your work through a news report of a recent "Hanky-panky" painting that was demonized. To me it says that the problems of others are often ignored until they affect your personally. I think it is an important message. Can you please tell me the significance of the six men wearing suits? Are prints available? Please don't stop what you are doing. P.S. My husband and I both love your boots.
I have spent HOURS looking at your paintings. The first exhibit I saw was some years ago at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass. Brilliant. I love your work.
Tu es génial Kent Monkman, puissé-je un jour être à la auteur de ton talent !
brava Mr Eagle Testickle. A perfect take on the bastardly cowardliness of modernity and its big harry nut sack called "history"
This is the first time that I have seen your work. The work, the detail, the undertones, and process it's all so amazing and fascinating ❣️ There's so much in this one piece that I can show my daughter and she'll be able to relate to in a positive way. Thank you for sharing
How I love your work, Kent!! Wishing you every success in all your endeavours!
Fantastic. Good to hear the story behind the art. First encountered Miss Chief in 2017. Powerful & thought provoking. Expanded my view of the Indigenous perspective & so much more. Thank you
Always incredible!
Amazing, Kent! I am really happy for your achievement.
love it <3
Thank you for posting this video! It confronts cultural appropriation and the way colonial perspectives have dominated the cultural narrative. Bravo, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle for taking back the power and shaking the cultural narratives!! I look forward to be shocked, moved and challenged by this work long into the future!
One of the best piece of art ever created. Ever since I saw it in Montreal, there isn't a month that goes by that I don't think if it. Thank you so much for making this accessible for all to see!!!!!!!!
Wicked
Love you Miss Chief, come to Venezuela :D
