Love the simplicity of it that officers sometimes forget. Grabbing an officers weapon justifies lethal force. Battling over the long gun, officers are focused on winning the battle for that weapon, instead of winning the war for your life. Keeping the long gun from the suspect gaining complete control just long enough to draw your side arm for some contact shots, that's how you win the war!

I will just say, never once has an armpit strike subdued me as an attacker. Plenty of times in sparring you will miss your target and hit something you aren't supposed to, and this is how I had personally determined that a lot of these "self defense" techniques are just not 100% sound. A kick to the balls didn't stop me in sparring, so why would it stop me on the street?
