Rycote Nerd - Micing up a presenter on a zipline for live TV
Really helpful!
Everybody does. But to be honest your microphone comparison videos were some of the most helpful back in the day.
I had to count the number of mics on the level meters to locate which mic it pertained to. Then the mics you were mentioning weren't the one's activated. I had to look side to side to find the one I was most interested in listening to. Useful nonetheless and otherwise well presented,
Excellent tests! Appreciate you putting this together in such a concise format
November 2024: Came here to check out 8060 v 416; there's a noticeable bass rumble in the 8060. The CMit5u sounds great but apparently it has issues with humidity. 416 wins IMHO.
I found a brand new mkh416 for 790 euro and a dpa 2017 for 930 euro. Would you go for the dpa even tho is 140 more expensive?
Hello, I found a brand new mkh416 for 790 euro and a dpa 2017 (new dpa release) for 930 euro. Would you go for the dpa even tho is 140 more expensive?
Dpa 4017b has option of c preamp as well which is great !
Very good comparison!
Man I just love the CS3e...so punchy. The DPA sounds killer as well.
Who doesn’t like funny cat videos
Hi mate, are the panels good at killing low-end build up, for recording vocals for instance ?
Great vid thanks for posting! Do you have anything in mind that could be used to mount these on in order to raise their height? I need to record a singer but they’re taller than the panels. Thanks!
Hi Andy, I Usually use some boxes to raise them. not ideal but it works and they sound incredible
lower noise with both schoeps and dpa as well
Bro, love your videos
The 8060 sounds to me like an EQed version of the 416 also with a tiny tiny bit less floor noise. I wonder if they had to EQ it because it’s a more sensitive mic than the 416. I think I am going to buy a 416 because it sounds to me like a more natural sound closer to what the human ear hears. I can always EQ it myself if need be in post (you can always EQ but you cannot de-EQ sound). Also, the 416 has the name that many customers ask for or even hire you for. Great video matey!! 👍🏻👍🏻
just bought a 416. I've got a Rode NT G 3 already. I was looking at the 8060, but actually after listening to these tests I think I'm gonna be quite happy with the 416 and for £300 I can't complain. When I get the money I will also look at getting either a cmit or 4017c, but I'm thinking the 416 might actually stop me going there.

Which is…?
That Top brand makes rubbish mics! 👎🏻👎🏻
Peter, these comparison videos you made are amazing work and I did come back to them over the years for comparison. Unfotunately though the site and the files are no more there it would be cool if we could have them.
Wow the cmit
Really well done, thank you.
hey man love your comparisons! Is there any chance to get an updated download Link for the iso tracks? cheers
I just stumbled across this when looking for straight up real life sound comparisons of the MKH 50, MKH 416, CMiT5u and MKH 8060. You totally killed this real life testing! I've viewed the bar, street, basement and now, as a scenario we need to truly consider- the highly reverberant public bathroom. Thank you so much for creating this and I know you put in a ton of production value into it. This is the most comprehensive testing I've seen on the internet anywhere. This has helped me formulate my decision to try the MKH 50 due to that hard reverb/feedback control in the bathroom while it seems the MKH 416 performed really well under the music in the bar lobby. Thank you again. I do hope you consider creating an updated comparison in environments such as at the train station lobby, near the actual train stops as people board the train, etc. I know it's a lot but you are truly helping people who want to make a decision but don't have the $$ or time to wait for constant "try out" periods one at a time. Cheers! I know the material is years old but I am still subscribing right now!
I’ve been using 416 for long time. I’m so surprised how 8060 sounds way more open/natural yet rejecting the environment noise as well as or better than 416…
Without putting them in order, for this type of scenario, the CMC641and MKH50 both had the best reverb rejection followed by the CS1 and as for the shotguns, I'd have to place the CS3e doing better rejection although all the rest of them are great (as they should being high end mics), though the high frequency of the 8060 can get a bit annoying after a while, at least in this environment. Great video! Enjoyed it all the way.
From this particular test - CMIT5U, MKH8060, 416, CS3e
great video but the link is dead :')
The Schoeps cmit 5u is a fantastic microphone ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - not only for voice recording in the studio/field but also for recording acoustic instruments. In many ways it has the same sound/capabilities of a large diaphragm mic.
I think the sanken cs3e is kinda off direction
What’s off direction mean ?
@@creativegreatsvisuals off axis of the microphone's pickup patterns , ( not directed right to the source of sound based on the mic pickup pattern )
@@3absalamz what’s a mics pick up pattern ?
@@creativegreatsvisuals A mic pickup pattern shows how a microphone picks up sound from different directions.Common patterns include cardioid (front-focused), omnidirectional (all directions), and bidirectional (front and back, but not the sides).
@@3absalamz so what do u think happened here with the sanken cs3e ? Is it the mic or position or way it was used that was wrong in your opinion?
Schoeps is the best indoor recording. 5u Would be a high quality recording outdoors
Hi Peter, great work, very instructive! I wanted to download the files and went over at the site shown in your description, but apparently the whole site is no more online? Is there any other place where the files could be downloaded? Thank you very much.
some of these mic have LPF filters...
This is the best microphone comparison test I've come across. Excellent and methodical. Been looking to see if I can improve my interior audio and I think I have a way forward!
this was really useful. thank you
Hi Peter, would you still happen to have the original files of this test series available? The link you provided isn’t active anymore. Cheers, Phil
Schoeps wins
great job cmc641 cs3e and mkh 50 take the cake for me, though the wasn't expecting as much hiss as there was on the 50
Very nice video man. I have two MKH 416 and I love both of them. Have used it on three films. However, in this situation I find the CS1 to reject the ambient noise better and gives the voice more space. It just goes to show why recording engineers use different microphones for different situations. There really is a microphone for different situations and different voices. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Great comparison! For me was surprising how 8060 reduces the reverberation compared to other mics, DPA was also a strong performer, and 416 is the standard for shotgun, so no surprise there. Great~!
Well the mkh50 wins that one for me, but the others are all fine to good.
Cool. After that video I'd be tempted to hang onto the CS1. I've got to be honest 416 was cool for me on axis. Just sounded good on your voice and cut a load of background. Was looking hard at the 8060 for performance and form factor and it does a decent job. Bit better than your CS1. Off to see if you ran them indoors.
are you planning on making more UA-cam videos about sound? you're the best
Cmit show great when you seat down he didn't get the lowest unwanted noise but a best level on axis.
416,cmit and ntg2 on top but ntg2 sound noisy in the low need a good high pass
Regardless of what the meters say, the quality of off-axis/background sound seems to be the microphone equivalent of bokeh in photographic lenses. The Rhode NTG2, although inexpensive and pretty good sounding on axis, really exhibited quite the most intrusive and tiresome off-axis/background sound of the lot. The CS1 was louder but not as tiresome to my ears. The 416 much better and about the same 8060 and cS3e slightly better (cS3e not as good on axis as the 8060) and Cmit5u a better still and sounds the best on axis. It may be more expensive than the others, but if I were buying a 'lifetime' mic I wouldn't hesitate - esp as you have to listen to it all day on headphones.
good test!
very interesting test!!! I thought from tonns of reviews that MKH50 & CMIT5 are miraculous mics in reflacting rooms. Outstanding from other mics... but there`s no such dramatic differense
Usefull!
thank you for the comparison!
