I'm Rob Michell, and welcome to my shed.
My new shed was completed in March 2020 and I've decided to get back into making things.
A trained model maker and with 10 years of experience prototyping, making custom furniture and wooden toys, I dropped it all to take a different path. The path has led me back to making things. As usual though, I need a bigger shed!
I'll try to cover a lot of things as they happen, from very basic information for starters to tips/tricks/mistakes that I make.
What do I do in my shed? Well, I make stuff of course. Collectible items for sale as well as commissioned items. I'm not going to start making kitchens or staircases again but I'm all up for challenges. You'll also see 3D printed things going on here as well as CNC work. Technology that I've used in the past but is now within reach of the average shed dweller.
Stay tuned, smash that subscribe button and stay safe.

Tamiya Porsche 956 - A better wheel design.
5 wheeled car.
Eh?
I'll explain, I've been making these prototypes to fit many options requested by Group C builders. The stock kit wheels in the Tamiya 956 are all but fantastic, they're wheels. The front is passable but too wide for there and the rear is a 5 spoke with mount holes visible. Not really up to the detail levels most people like. So as pat of the on-going P956 Details Kit, I've wheels done!
Front wheel 24mm - Stock kit foam tyre
Front wheel 30mm - Rear foam Tamiya F104 tyre
Front wheel 30mm - Beaded for Tamiya F1 Rubber front tyre
Rear wheel 45mm - Stock kit foam tyre
Rear wheel 35mm - Beaded for Tamiya F1 Rubber rear tyre
PLUS:
Aero/vent/fancy/cover disks for both fronts and rears
Centre boss with nut detail for rear wheel
Valve stems

Tamiya Porsche 956 details Kit plans.

So, the Tamiya 956 kits are gradually landing. My stock was delivered this week so I could already get a kit opened and start to look at the potential for detailing parts. There are some parts that jump out at me as really worthy upgrades and some other more subtle parts that might even go unnoticed. This isn't an unboxing video, it's just me running though some ideas and comparison of what cou...

That's it boys and girls. I've blown it up. I snuck out tonight as tomorrow is looking sketchy. The car is still fully intact but the lower double whatsit trunnion primary drive thingamajigger spline has give up and I can't be arsed to strip it all down tonight in the hope of getting another run in tomorrow. 3S2P setup is smoother running that the 2S I had but as a result, traction is an utter ...

While we haven't exactly set the tarmac ablaze with speed this week, I must admit, the car is an absolute joy to drive. It’s like the automotive equivalent of sipping a fine wine. Smooth, refined, and completely unbothered by trivial concepts like haste. It’s not so much about getting there quickly as it is about arriving in style, with the car quietly whispering, "Relax, we’ll get there when w...

Finally recorded a run but I think I've some ESC issues. Nothing thermal as motor and ESC aren't even warm to the touch. So I'll have a cup of tea and scratch my heard a little. A very smooth but not so fast 45MPH on the books for my 2WD MF-01x build. It runs sooo nicely. Then.. I checked the space I'm running, measured the straight that I have and see why I'm only getting it that fast. :D Any ...

I had an unexpected opportunity to test the Radiolink setup on the car this evening. I did touch 45mph but nothing official set yet. Still some settings or finger tweaks to work out for the acceleration and braking. I did set myself the 2WD challenge as it's an LMP of sorts. So I'm sticking to that setup, dropping in the front diff and making a driveshaft would possibly be the best way forward ...

What's this MF-01XPERIMENTAL all about then?

For those who have no clue what the last video is about, this may or may not clear up some things. Basically a little side project to make something slow into something fast, turn a rally car into a Group C racer. Light hearted flexing of the mind, the thinking and the creativity. Some links and mentions. The Poor Boys RC Speed challenge: www.youtube.com/@UCfCs8qOPaYK0IUGRIw3reYQ The first shak...

As a little inbetweener, I decided to take up the challenge set by Fil. Push an MF-01x chassis into the unknown. The Poor Boys Speed Challenge 2024 is a fun little thing for RC crazies around the world to set speed records. This year a very unsuitable chassis was chosen, one that was designed as a short wheelbase, compact rally chassis. Stock, a top speed of about 17Mph or 27ish Kph. As I'm rou...

Is it Sunday already?! Before I get busy with stuff at the house, I've made the customary update from the control room here at PROJECT959 HQ. Body shells are in, 2 huge boxes stuck in the shed for now. Other things are on the way or awaiting customs. The printers are doing their thing, pretty much round the clock actually. I added an extra printer too so that I have a higher output and of cours...

What started as making an alloy drive shaft for a personal project soon got out of hand. Now I'm putting together 100 individually numbered collectors self-assembly kits that contain all of the parts to build a classic rally 959. Chassis set, wheels, tyre, body and a whole lot more. Most of the parts are designed and made by me. A full description of the custom parts can be found on the site, t...

Something slightly different this time. My good friend Andy saw the passion I had for making things in the shed, specially the Land Rover Defenders caught his eye. He asked if he could drop by and make a short clip, using his craft to shoot my craft. What an honour! Thanks Andy! Also thanks to my friends at Land Rover Belgium for the load of the incredible Defender for this clip. Please do chec...

Very nicely done , super mooi gedaan
The 956 isn't for me but if it was I'd be going for some of these wheels. Excellent detail as always.
Brilliant Rob! Nice job. I like the 24mm front rim for the stock foams. Will the wheels be available separately or in sets?
killer
Would F104W rubber tires fit under the body?
F104W rubber tires are hard to find nowadays are they not?
True. But for personal use, RcMart has a few left
Great stuff for the rubber tire. Please make also rubberwheels for the Mercedes C11.
Wow!! Very interested in this! Is this part of your kit you are putting together. Also, What Tamiya rubber tires should I look out for? The Tamiya F104? Can't wait!
Crazy indeed! Rubber tyres are my pick!
I like the wheelsets using the foams, with the wider fronts. It looks much more scale and having the front and rear air deflectors better matches the 956 long tail bodyshell configuration, used at Le Mans.
If current F1 rubber tyres fit your rims, I'll be buying a few sets.
Incredibley nice job. So now I need 10 rims for a full kit...😅
Crazy details and options 😮 Well done Rob 👍
Anyone got suggestions for sourcing the correct decals? Just made the pre order!😊
Keep an eye on my Instagram or Facebook page. The race entry decal is already done and I’ll be working on getting the rest made for the 1983 1st and 2nd place car ;) Instagram is needabiggershed’

@@gvoluto2816 and here we are. Looking at a new Tamiya kit 😁 one of the cheapest hobbies I know ;)
Nice PorschE. Lieber Gott, you English with your "porsh"!
😂 potato, potato
Jägermeister livery incoming.
Haha. Not from me. Dislike the stuff 😁
Really liked the C11 kits which I applied on my latest build. Looking forward to which extra details are created by you based on this video and lift this 956 kit to an upper class of beautiness. Your detail kits are top notch, keep up the good work.
I bought and applied your full C11 detailing kits and they really do add some scale authenticity to that car. I would definitely be interested in adding as many detailing parts to the 956 as possible, including diffuser and wheels/tyres if you make them. Going to hold fire on the authentic sponsor decals, as the upscaling nearly doubles the price. The supplier may in time make a dedicated 1 1/0 scale version. Keep up the good work
I'm waiting on my kit from LandL, then I suspect I will be buying the dress up parts from you. Really excited about this one :D
Very nice vid, i hope you also speak/read dutch. Wat zijn de evt verzendkosten vanuit u naar Nederland toe
Thanks! All on the shop. If I remember offhand. 20 Euro to NL for the 956 kit&bearing set. The details kits aren't ready yet of course :) I forgot to mention in the video, the 956 kit will also give 10 Euro discount on the details kit when they're ready. www.needabiggershed.com
Rob is back at it. Good stuff!
looking forward to see the finished items
Will you try a clipless body? It’s pretty easy to stack neodymium magnets on the body posts and have a stub of the post to interface with the magnets on the body. It works quite well for on road RC’s. The new 911 Dakar rally pack livery has “Roughroads” the replace the cigarette brand which is a bit silly
Apart from the missing Rothmans logo, the box art and other images of the finished product are missing the Shell and Dunlop logos as well as any tire sidewall decal.
Definitely two piece wheels.
6:02 The rear wheel is not correct-it is a re-issue of the Mazda wheel. The factory used six spoke magnesium wheels on their cars but most privateers used BBS wheels.
You're right. Can be got away with but digging through the kit this morning I realised the mounting system for the 5 spoke is really not nice, piercing a spoke. The C11 6 spoke rim is much nicer. So sourcing C11 wheel sets could be an option but I'm guessing they're as rare as hens teeth. Also the Group C front rims are too wide for the supplied foams. So making my own, I can fix that. I've already a couple of options in my head to get around all this, neither are BBS as I personally don't like BBS wheels. Odd huh? :D
Porsche likely would have used Ronal wheels
@@jonthomas8487 The factory used Speedline 6 spoke magnesium wheels.
My Poorboys speed run shell. Really want that Newman livery. Great video.
A two-piece front wheel would be a nice addition to the car. So if you are planning to add them to your detailing kits, I'd be in for a set. And, who knows, if Tamiya notices that group C cars are a thing again, they might eventually release a Mazda 787B again? This one also had wheel covers iirc. If they are the same as with the Porsche, you would have done some work in advance. 😉
A big yes from me regarding the two piece front wheels. I’ll be after one of your detail kits for sure.
Another nice project in the making, Rob 👏 I can understand the removal of current brand of "poison", but for defunct brands (the "R" brand is dead since 1999 based on wikipedia), I clearly do not 🤔 Anyway, it's probably an endless debate 😅
Any idea how much the kit will be? (The upgrade parts).
Not until I know what is going in there, nope.
Beautiful build Rob. My favorite build of the 2024 SRC. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
You really needed a longer road, Rob. Even I found a 200+ meters road in one of the most mountainous country in Europe, so in the "plat pays" ("flat country" as it's called), it should be possible 😅 Please try that, as this car is so good looking, it's a shame not to send it to the insane speed it should go. Anyway, it was awesome to see. Thanks for that ✌🤝
Oh, we do have roads here :) The problem is, we have Belgian roads. They are pretty terrible. even the new ones are typically fitted with inspection covers that aren't flush with the surface. Otherwise it's concrete slab roads that have an expansion joint every 6metres or so. To venture further away, like Holland for example (where they have read books on laying roads) just hasn't been able to happen, too many things going on to drive an hour ro get 5 mins running. I'll keep the car for the next opportunity though, it will go a lot faster, that's for sure.
I guess that with more time and a longer road, much more would have been possible. The prize for the most beautiful car in the challenge definitely goes to you!
It would be great to see it reach its full potential
You made a beautiful machine.just subbed
Aw man. Sorry you didn't get to see what it could really do. Great build. Great attention to detail.
Would be great to see what it would actually do if you got it on an open track. Its raring to go. 😊😊 Looks fantastic 👍
To me she was drawing board favourite especially as you went 2wd with aero I thought you would have won. You needed a long road apparently there's more of them in US, Germany and Italy, US roads are smooth UK we have potholes and draincovers except for the guy who's got Goodwood racetrack to himself that's what you need
@@daysofnick the 2wd should definitely be better. Stability certainly suffers with big power. But if everything is built around that, there is great potential.
Well done anyway, Rob. It's a beautifull car with more potential in it. I'm sure.
Magnificent work
This looks amazing, I think at somepoint you said you might be releasing the STL's somewhere? Any idea if you are still going to release them and when/where. We are having a velodrome even here in Melbourne, Australia soon and would be very keen on trying something like this out.
Tamiya F1 rubber tires in a super soft compound. They are a 14 mm hex, so some modification might be needed. They don't appear any taller than normal touring car tires.
🤞 on the 50 MPH, Rob 🤝
That car sounds wonderful and looks very well set up. Just seaching for power. Good luck!
That looks solid as there Rob. Fingers crossed for you getting out for another run and getting the 50 🤞
I used to race full size cars at my local speedway and unfortunately how to find out how fast a car/handle is to crash it. I personally would have kept it 4wd to get rid of the spin outs that are inherent in rwd cars as a whole. My Dodge Hellcat was a scary adventure to drive when the supercharger wound up. But it looks incredible, just need to hash out the bugs.
get a radiolinl 7ch - will sharpen response and give you more adjustment - well yo could do - just saying
Very smooth. Love the design.
If it drives anything like a TT02, then you're still in the wobble zone at 45mph. Once you punch through that and point the car straight, it should correct itself. What oils are you running in your diffs? Try easing into the throttle and see if it cuts. Once you get to a certain point, the voltage sag will cause a power cut and ruin your run. I just did this last night knocking the rust off 👍 ..went from 82mph to 97mph😄
