Recreating DUCK HUNT in VR
This is a retro "48 Hour Experiment" going all the way back to 2017.
This was first created under "The Distraction Lab" banner and I realized it never made its way to my new channel. This was an early, but super fun test of the Oculus Rift (not Quest. Rift!) It started as "What would Duck Hunt be like in VR?" and morphed into a silly "What would Duck Hunt be like in VR, with a modern twist?"
It was created in Unity. The dog and birds all use sprite sheets. I have some basic animation controllers for the dog, and the birds use procedural and random animations for their flight paths. Nothing crazy here, but shooters were fun when VR first launched, and they're still fun now.
And to clarify: THIS IS NOT A REAL PRODUCT. THIS WILL NEVER BE A REAL PRODUCT. AND I WILL NOT RELEASE IT. I don't have the rights to Duck Hunt and I have no interest in testing Nintendo's lawyers by releasing this. It was just a fun 48 hour experiment, and then it becomes something my kids can play with.

    I remember using LandScape! Virtual mapmakers have kept me in the hobby much longer than I would have otherwise and this new take on the app looks great. With Renegades Heroscape revival coming up, the community really needs something modern like this with mobile and tablet instructions for quick terrain building and virtual map sharing. If that turns out to be the form of an official app or your own version with LandScape 2.0, I wish you the best with your developments. Lots of great features on show here even as an early prototype.

    I only get about 28-30 fps in Unity 2022 on the M1 in Full HD, how can this be? In 4k UHD I am at 8-9 FPS...

      Thanks! And yes - I upgraded to 16GB. Not sure how it would handle on 8GB - I'm not sure I've even run Unity, on any platform, with 8 (but for what it's worth, in Activity Monitor, running that exact project (in the Unity IDE) shows Unity taking ~1.7GB of RAM. Running a stand-alone Mac app version is using ~1.4 GB. Impressively low, considering)
