Приєднався 1 вер 2017
Hiking, backpacking, long trails and all that goes with it. Bushcraft, wood lore with camping thrown in. I've lived my life in the woods and i hope i can share my love for the great outdoors, traditional craft and the history behind it with everyone along the way. Its all spent in the company of "The Dog" Buddy who spends most of his time standing in front of the camera. Thanks for stopping by.....oh and don't forget to subscribe.

Helikon Tex Haversack Review
I purchased this bag a few months ago and have used it whilst tracking wildlife as well as teaching and have put it through its paces to see the pitfalls but I couldn't find many, the few it does have are easily fixed. This is only my opinion and of course you may disagree with me and if I have missed anything or you have any questions leave a comment and I will reply as quickly as possible.

Channel Update for 2020
Переглядів 1213 роки тому
A quick update of what I have been up to over the last few years and why I have not been posting videos. I've been busy gaining bushcraft and natural history qualifications whilst setting up Woodsman Bushcraft with my business partner Barry. you can find Barry on youtube on his channel at woodsmanbarry and see what we have both been busy doing at Woodsman Bushcraft. Thanks for watching, if you ...
Lockdown Woodland sit spot
Переглядів 923 роки тому
Whilst on my tracking and trailing I spend time just sitting in the woods, I thought I would take you with me just in case you are unable to leave the house due to lockdown. This was taken at the end of the day when all the animals are roosting and bedding down. Let me know what you think and I can take you along for more. Thanks for watching.
Tree Felling Practice
Переглядів 575 років тому
So some of you know I am enrolled on a Level 4 applied Bushcraft course and on that course we need to fell trees with our Gransfors small forest axe. So I took Barry away so we could have some practice. We ended up in a small wood in North Kent for an overnighter. Their is a lot of rope throwing and chopping, evidentially we need more practice at rope throwing. I hope you enjoy this video and i...
Solo Canoe Overnighter

I have finally found the time to get out and test the new kneeling thwart in my boat, a sneaky overnighter after a windy upstream paddle comes good with fishing and food. Thanks for watching a don't forget to subscribe.

Axe Sharpening
Переглядів 537 років тому
You never quite know whats lurking within the log you're chopping and it seems something was hiding in wait for my Swedish carving axe. It resembles a saw blade, which naturally I'm not happy with but with my Japanese Waterstones I plan to remove the damage. Thanks for watching :)
Grey Owl Paddle Repair
Переглядів 8987 років тому
My paddle met with a disaster and had its handle snapped off during my level 1 coaching course and as a snapped paddle wasn't covered under warranty, i decided other to bin it i would attempt to fix it. it seems to have been a success but we won't know until its been on the water (this weekend). I just don't see the point in paying for new kit when we can fix the kit we have. Thanks for watchin...

Fitting a kneeling thwart

This is my 15 ft we-no-nah prospector,I'm off on an overnighter in a couple of weeks and its time to get the outfitting done. In this video i am fitting a kneeling thwart. I hope i can help anyone else out there trying to do the same to their boat. Thanks for watching.
Lacing a canoe
Переглядів 11 тис.7 років тому
This is my 15 ft we-no-nah prospector, I'm off for an overnighter with the dog in a few weeks so its time to get it outfitted for the trip. Lacing the boat provides me with secure loops inside the boat to attach dry bags etc. Ive really enjoyed making this and i hope it helps some people gain the courage to drill holes in their own canoes. please like share and subscribe. oh and thanks for watc...
I had to order this one from a UK website, as the only one I could find here in the US was the all black version. I was desperate to have the green and black version(like yours). Fortunately, it was free shipping, even though I'm in the US. I already own the Helikon Tex Bushcraft Satchel, but I needed to down size, as it was a bit too big for my liking. Also, the lack of a grab handle was annoying, too.
Excellent video. Just the information I needed and no waffle. A competent job completed to a high standard. Thank you..
I’d put tubing on the loops to keep fishing lures from staging the rope
Thanks, very helpful
The most idiotic flap buckle in the known universe. I have returned the bag.
Best dog 🤗
Nice work and detailed description thanks
Sorry I could not hear much of what you said. Seems like an interesting topic though but the mix makes it difficult to follow.
The price is very reasonable, as the size. It is a great daypack, put a E & E pouch on it and you are ready to go. Its a great investment, I love it. Nice 😊
Nice one 👍👍👍
G,Day Mate , my Helikon Tex Haversack cost me $75 ( Australian ) which I was happy to pay , considering what it cost to purchase similar quality items for twice the price so what you get is quite good for the price you pay and even though it is a tight fit , a nalgene bottle does fit in the internal water bottle sleeve , you just have to twist it like a screw when you are taking it in and out of the pack , nothing really hard about it . Cheers Mate , 👍🙂🇦🇺 .
Just gave you a sub. What rope and length painters do you use?
Hi TOOZE CRUISE, I’ve just used a floating rope bought from my local canoe shop 10mm I think, the length is 1 1/2 times the length of the boat so in this case I’ve used around 20ft
@@thewoodsmanthedog9836 Thanks for the reply brother!
@@TOOZECRUISE that’s what it’s all about. Sharing and learning.
Psa i torbę mam . Pozdrawiam z Polski .
The bushcraft store sell it now pal ,£39.95 I think and 4 colours to choose from, cheers.
Hi Anthony , yes they do so a much better choice plus the staff at TBS are really helpful.
Great instructional video. I have a novocraft 15.6. Ft there are different lengths of flotation bags. How did u decide which to use. Ps. Gave u a sub.
dude....where is the dog ????
Wrong in so many ways.
But you're not going to tell us any of them? Helpful.
@@w.w.8823 Ask and ye shall receive.
@@w.w.8823 1. Too high. The bow will be levered downwards causing it to zig-zag when towed. 2. Too far aft. There is no structural rigidity in a flat section of topsides. 3. Sharp edge. The hole should have been sanded or filed smooth and the edge chamfered. 4. No reinforcement. Epoxy could have been utilized to disperse forces. 5. Water ingress. A hole in the hull will let water in. Using epoxy to create a solid area spanning both holes would have eliminated the problem. 6. Water penetration. Water can enter the strata of the hull material causing delamination if not sealed with epoxy or similar. 7. Wrong knot. The forces could have spread to both sides if two knots were used. 8. Wrong material. Floating polypropylene line is weak and has no purpose in this application. 9. Too much rope. A meter of line where less than half would do a better job. 10. Zip ties??? Sailors, watermen, mariners, riggers and paddlers etc. don't need zip ties. You're welcome.
@@UguysRnuts Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Great video brother. Just getting into paddling and am highly appreciative of your help in outfitting my canoe
Joseph Beaudoin glad to be of some help. Another good resource is Ray Goodwin’s book. Have a look he’ll go through all the strokes and some more of the outfitting.
Enjoyed the video. I may need something stronger than tea before drilling holes in my canoe though. Greetings from Satellite Beach, Florida.
Need a mic mate
I got a prospector 17 sp3 and want to do the same. Can I damage the boat in any way? What is the risk 😄 Sorry I’m new to canoe.
Simon P. Hello, the SP3 is a pretty indestructible boat just be sure to measure accurately before any drilling.
Thx big time 😊 and thx for the video, It’s a huge help. Just what I was searching for. 😊
Simon P glad to hear, tell everyone you know to subscribe and we could end up with a fleet of canoes
good video. Im debating whether to install airbags in my vagabond. But I cant bring myself to drilling holes in the boat. lol Im trying to figure out a way to lace in bags without going thru the hull. happy paddling!
Nice!
It’s been awhile! Nice to see you back in action. Those are skills all outdoorsman should learn correctly! Practice makes almost perfect. Thanks for posting! Cheers and best wishes!
Its been too long, last summer I enrolled on John Ryders level 3 advanced bushcraft course and now I'm half way through the level 4 applied so its difficult to find the time to film. but thanks for sticking with it.
Nice set of videos and nice paddle to end it. Good job. I use an otter tail as well when the water is deep enough to allow it.
Thanks very much Micheal. luckily my local river is very deep for most of its length and its always nice to use new kit
Just got myself a new Kevlar 16ft prospector and getting ready to fit it out to be ready for spring. I totally get you having a cup of tea to calm down before drilling holes in a nice new canoe.
just take it one step at a time and measure, measure and measure. then check again ha ha
Cool video. Can you share the bag model with us?
Hi David, sorry for the long time replying, those air bags in my canoe are "Peak UK, Airbags, Canoe (pair)" bought from Kent Canoes around £46 I think.
Great videos, I would love to see any future repairs that you do on video as there are so few available online and the quality of your videos are great.
Nice little episode. If your in the market for a bush buddy I have the knock-off version or Lexada. Works great and inexpensive. Surprisingly good quality. Best wishes from across the pond. MG
Good stuff!
Nice work. Thanks for sharing
Nice save, brother! I’ll have to find the episode where you try her out. The suspense..... I’ve just purchased my first used canoe. A junker but she’s all mine. She came with 3 wooden abused paddles that need salvaging. Wish me luck. I enjoy your videos and recently subscribed. Cheers! MG
Thanks, I have yet to use the repaired paddle but I did have it as a back up on my last video. Canoes are a wonderful way to travel and if you get to make it your own, well all the better for it I say. Good luck restoring your paddles and thanks for being a subscriber.
An enjoyable journey.I was watching your j-stroke there, picking up some tips! Just got myself an open canoe after many years of being a kayaker,it's a whole new learning curve paddling a canoe.Atb,Andy.
Rameman thanks, I’ve spent most of my time in a kayak over the last few years but it’s always nice to get out in the big boat every so often. If you get a chance to pick up a beaver tail paddle I highly recommend it.
Why a beaver tail in particular mate,i'd like to know as i'm going to K&P's at the weekend to get a paddle for the canoe.
Sorry I meant a Ottertail (the one in the video) the beavertail was designed for whitewater but can be used on the flat as well.I haven't used one yet but fingers crossed. I had been using a Grey Owl voyageur made from laminated lime, ash, cherry and walnut for a couple of years and this is a very nice paddle don't get me wrong but once i'd used the Grey Owl cherry chieftain for this trip I was sold. The voyageur is quite a stiff paddle because it is laminated but is cheaper and can withstand more knocks because of it. Where as the chieftain is carved out of one solid piece of cherry so it is very soft, you get a much better feel for each paddle stroke but won't hold up to heavy power strokes or pry's (Its also expensive). I personally felt I had more control and could move faster through the water with the ottertail. Plus I loved the feel of the chieftain, there isn't a varnish on the paddle so its very tactile. if your buying a paddle don't forget to get a spare, doesn't need to be anything special but you will need it, you can pick up polyurethane paddle for under £20 that will do the job.
Many thanks for the advice buddy,i appreciate it.
I really enjoyed the video, thanks buddy.
thank you very much, it was a good little trip.
What length cord did you use for each side?
Dee Tee it obviously depends on the length of boat, but the rule of thumb is one and a half lengths of the boat for lacing each side. This will leave some left over for handy tie downs.
How long should the rope be?
painter 3 meters- ish, bow loop I have always threaded the loop got it right, tired the not and cut off excess
where's testing video?
Christopher Richardson, it hasn't been filmed yet, a busy work/home life and whiplash on a grade 4 in my playboat have hampered me over the last few months and not much as been uploaded but full health and spare time will soon allow me to continue and finish this playlist.
I want to do exactly what you've demonstrated there on me new Hou 13ft. Top marks for technique and method etc. Only gripe is that I lost you on the sound a bit, you're quite muffled so I had to crank the sound right up. A little lav mic would do it.
Thanks Andy, yes since I shot this I've purchased a mic and when the new videos go up hopefully their will be an improvement with the quality. But I couldn't wait to work on the canoe and we work with what we've got (GoPro). I hope its helped with your own project.
awesome video, woodsman & the dog! hopefully more people will subscribe to you (like i did) when they see how interesting your uploads are. under-noticed channels like yours and mine could use the attention. : )
Appreciate that thanks, I'm just starting out but all subs help spread the word.
