Surreal 98 (previously DXU24) is a Game Rendering Client that allows old games to run in Unreal Engine 5 through magic. To be released Soon(ish) on steam to allow players to enjoy their favourite classics with upgrade rendering techniques, new advanced content pipelines that allow a modern approach to modding, and Virtual Reality support.
Surreal 98 is not a remake or a remaster, it does not recreate any copyrighted assets contained in target games. It instead interprets target games while they are running on your PC and adapts them to run in Unreal Engine 5 in real-time. A legal copy of any target game is required to run Surreal 98.
Side-by-side comparisons shown in the video are recorded concurrently, showing both Unreal Engine 1 and Unreal Engine 5 running at the same time, no video editing was done to composite them side-by-side, it is a single screen capture of two separate applications.
Video is of current(ish) state of the project, some visible bugs may already be fixed by the time of you viewing.

Liberty Island Ambience

Using streaming levels to add an endless ocean, volumetric fog, a cloud shadowed directional light to Liberty Island, something that modders will be able to augment the original levels. Liberty Island desperately needs some fog.

Is it possible for you to create a port for quest 3 on sidequest like team beef? I would love to play deus ex on the go I have a legal copy?
Unfortunately, without the Deus Ex / UT99 Source code, this is not feasible. Quest headsets natively run an ARM architecture processor, and to run this project you'll need to have an x86 processor (Intel/AMD). This is primarily because this project relies on the original game to run for it to work.
This looks great. Will it be only Steam or available for GoG and standalone also? In the mean time, I'm checking to save for a voluntary $12 donation to support your work. If it's only a UE5 skin for UE1 DX, I guess combining all connected maps into one large 64--bit map is not part of current future plans. I'm now thinking of, example, the three training areas into one map, no loading between the sections. Or in the main game, Liberty Island + UNATCO HQ + MJ12 Labs into one map. And as the poster states, I recently reinstalled DX, around the time I surfed across this mod of yours.
Hey! Currently we're only planning on Steam distribution, but who knows, plans can change! So this is more complex than a re-skin or a port. This runs the original game in the background and translates it at run time to UE5, so stitching the maps together could prove a little difficult.
@@dxu2424 so it's a translation layer sort of deal? like dxvk to translate dx8/9/10/11 to vulkan or wine to translate windows programs into linux ones?

This looks great. If I had only a little feedback it's that the lighting is way too bright in some areas and it takes away from some of the atmosphere of the original and the other is it would be nice to see more upgraded meshes and textures, but otherwise it's really nice to see my favorite game getting a facelift.
It's kind of amazing that it still looks pretty good for it's age.
There seems to be two different people working on doing the exact same thing when it comes to porting this game to UE5 i wonder if they have talked at all.
I don't believe we have but I'm always open to conversation :)
Just want to say, you're the last bastion of the Deus Ex community, if you ever finish this project one day, i hope i can play it, this game is my favourite and i believe it is the favourite of many people as well. Keep going, and keep us updated too!

This renders what ever UE1 tells it to. So will work with any map.
Back in the days i had Unreal running under the UE 4.36 in linux. Unfortunaly Na Pali didn't work then.

Sweet! This would fix the problem Star Trek DS9: The Fallen had back then, areas too dark because there was nothing akin to bounce lighting. Love that you can also essentially use the low-rez assets from the game you own as placeholders while the mod project upgrades the content to new ones.

Will it be possible to use the original first person models for the weapons, or will we only be able to use the pickup models?
Unfortunately the first person meshes only contain triangles that face the player. So the other side of the weapon you never got to see is entirely missing polygons :(. Otherwise I would have used them in a heartbeat.

You have no idea how much this kind of interaction means. You could’ve easily gone the “guns glued to your hands” route but this is so so cool. I am absolutely itching for VR games that let you interact with guns and props like boneworks and vertigo

So any mod and texture pack installed on the original will work on this? So like HD textures, and HD maps? Unreal Redux also being made, it will be incredible with HD textures and UE5. And I wonder what new maps considering this tech could bring to us. Keep up the good work!
Yes, Surreal 98 does what ever Unreal Engine 1 tells it to do, so HD texture packs and maps come along for the ride. A word of warning though, if the HD maps use TOO many point lights as flood lighting it will tank performance. This appears to be an issue with TNM as well. A fix for this would be remaking those maps in UE5 and using them as "overrides" through our modding architecture for the original maps from UE1 as they come through to Surreal 98.

Not unless the target games also have a linux version. Even then, we simply arent targetting native linux, more likely proton/wine.

I think it's probably more likely that someone makes a skeletal animation mod for Surreal 98, where they manually rig all the original DX meshes. redo the animations and allow ragdolls through that. An automatic non skeletal mesh -> skeletal mesh conversion system is likely going to be full of bugs and edge cases, but it has crossed my mind.

Please upgrade most of the sound effects too (I despise Revision so don't go too crazy) like the obnoxious alarms, "high heels running", various guns/etc. that literally breaks certain sound levels within bass/treble, and much more...
