How I made a 3D printed, mini-industrial ROBOT ARM...
Переглядів 635Рік тому
I made a 3d printed, 5 axis, robotic arm in just my bedroom. My robot uses 3d printed cycloidal drives (20:1 and 13:1) with Nema(17 and 23) stepper motors. Its also completely Arduino based. This project costed me many hours of sleep deprivation and depression, so do me a solid and subscribe. If you like the video, be sure to comment robot ideas for me to spend all my money on. Thanks bro
Hey man, thanks for this video. Can't explain enough how much time this saved me. After following, I was able to finally design and 3d print mine. It works very nicely with *almost zero backlash, except I am unable to properly align the output shaft with the two cycloidal discs. I used the same CAD models from Fusion 360 after using the curve generator, and after printing and assembling, the output shaft appears to be skewed, instead of being centered. Any chance you could advise on how to fix this? Would really appreciate. Many thanks.
@@goplayman5658 All I can think of is to make sure you’ve centred your output shaft sketch off the right point
Why too much swearing
Thank you so much. I was almost about to follow a different video where they sketched the whole thing
8:02 yes 3d printing cost alot, better buy ready made hardened drives lol. wtf 4AUS 10pcs i could pay that for one. not any expensive its gear you need it lol
7:31 there go backlashess lol. stepper motor not make it worse lol
had a lot of fun watching this!
I get that you're trying to bring some levity tothe material with all the beeped out cursings, but it just comes of a bit amateurish.
I love that the folder name is “4K Hentai” 😂😂

“Can you fucken focus” My mum to me
Do you really think you sound cool with all the swearing? It just sounds juvenile. Sorry, just the truth.
ratio
eccentricity mainly drives the shape of the pressure angle vs rotation angle plot
Keep making content, this was really well done and helped me understand cycloidal gearboxes better, just subscribed!
thanks bro
There is another variant of the planetary gear set that I rarely hear about: the compound planetary gear set. A compound set uses a small sun gear to drive very large planet gears, but the planet gears are rigidly co-axial with really small planetary gears that then turn inside a ring gear. This compound planetary gear system enables extreme gear reduction ratios using a planetary gear set, and doesn't have any additional moving parts compared to a traditional planetary gear set. This should be tested as well.
Yeah good idea
that’s called a Wolfrom drive
You can also do the same thing with a pair of cycloidal drives whose eccentricity cancels eachother out for some truly extreme drive ratios. You see this on UA-cam called a “hypocycloidal drive” which I think is probably a misnomer. It’s also sold commercially by Onvio under the name Dojen.
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you (Also i saw that 4k hentai directory lmao)
ahahha i've been waiting for someone to notice
Thank you for the video! I was looking into this and then I saw the latest video from Mishin Machine channel. He has a similar drive, but it's just much simpler as it has less moving parts and needs less bearings.
took the words right out of my mouth bro, i was about to say this fr
honest to god
Would say this is a very good summerize for me as what tricks and pitfalls are in making it.
Great design!! Keep up the good work!! Great content!! 😊
Thank you <3
Love this video and your whole style. I think you might be able to get much closer to your 40Nm target if you use some kind of code to smooth out the stepper acceleration. Maybe because its trying to lurch too much the motor driver current tops out or some shit? Maybe you've already done that and its just the way she goes with too much friction in the gear box though.
Thanks bro I appreciate it! I was messing around with acceleration prior to recording to try and give it some more leniency but I don't think it changes much at all, I think it all just narrows down to the friction
I feel your pain, ive deisgned many 3d printed cycloidal gearboxes and the efficiency is just terrible. Im currently working on making my own almost fully metal cycloidal drive and im expecting some huge imprivemnt, maybe gonna make some video about the difference, but first i got to learn how to use lathe properly... have fun on your future projects.
I was designing a cheap cycloidal drive as well, very similar to yours just slightly smaller with very few bearings and no low friction materials, your efficiency numbers are very similar to mine (around 27%), I think that's about the limit of capability for a design that minimizes bearings and is mostly made out of 3d printed parts so I think the design is good, it's just reaching the limit of the materials and techniques used, I am yet to try lubricating the cycloid, but I don't expect it to be a huge improvement.
138 subs is criminally low

Nice design. Did you measure the torque of just the stepper motor? Your efficiency should be closer to 75%.
Thanks Paul, love your vids! I just went off the torque rating of the motor website, I didn’t even think of measuring it myself ahaha. Definitely will do that and revaluate the results
How do you have such little subscribers for the high quality content you produce? Its really good its educational and funny! ^^
Thanks brother🔥
the only issue its off-axis, not centered, try tesla turbine air friction gears instead. can be made in on axle, but also just like normal gears.
thats crazy that someone with 83 subscribers has helped me so much more than any other channel or video ive seen. Thank you so much! keep up the good work!!
Glad I could help bro, I appreciate the feedback ❤
I wonder how small you can make it, and then I wonder how well that would work in a 3d printer extruder with that high gear ratio! Has a lot of new designs are using planetary and other designs to generate high gear ratios to allow the stepper motors to turn at their optimal speed
Yeah good ideas! I’ve been looking into increasing my budget and buying cnc parts for a metal fabricated cycloidal gearbox with a 25:1 (or higher). This way I’ll be able to get a more optimal performing gearbox while also keeping the size down.
@@nelsonhowee I have been getting into engineering and been working on designing my own robotic arm. And as it turns out I actually have access to a CNC at my work. If you ever need any CNC parts cut Id be happy to to help you out man!
Truly amazing! Makes me wanna drive a cycloid!

Really cool dude, nice video and fun project
i was surprised when i saw that you have less than 100 subs while watching the video, this is some 1-mill+ production quality
Thanks man, maybe one day ahaha
Cycloidal drives are pretty cool
Nice one
44 abos, that cant be real, great video !

Thanks 🔥
Keep cracking bro, very well made content. Only a matter of time before you grow
Appreciate it bro 🙌
