Composed by James Swearingen, "The Last Rose of Summer" is a musical adaptation of a poem by the Irish poet Thomas Moore, who was a contemporary and friend of Byron and Shelley. Moore penned the poem in 1805 while staying at Jenkinstown Park in County Kilkenny, Ireland. The poem was later set to its famous melody by Sir John Stevenson and was published in a collection of Moore's works titled "Irish Melodies" (1807-34).
