I have been doing this for years and I guarantee it works. it's like a mini greenhouse and i agree, it looks pretty strange. when i run out of jars I use inverted plastic wine glasses. they look even more strange and I suspect my neighbours think I'm a confused alcoholic - but I have happy, healthy plants, and my neighbours don't ;)
