Why and How 21st Century Capitalism Undermines American Democracy: A Problem for both Trump & Harris
We continue our discussion of the the interaction of democracy and capitalism in America in the 21st century, noting how large portions of the American public's paths to security let alone prosperity are undercut by a long-standing, slow building affordability crisis that became increasingly obvious and salient in light of the recent period of higher overall inflation. Further, the core expenses driving the affordability crisis--housing, health care, higher education, child- and elder- care--are all governed by public policy or its failures more than by pure economic forces. In other words, the affordability crisis drives partisan polarization into especially negative forms that tend, especially in the US, to block precisely the public policy that would be required to address the underlying sources of frustration, disillusionment and grievance. Finally we move from the question of how the affordability crisis affects the prospects not only for a Donald Trump or Kamala Harris victory but also for the prospects for success of their future administrations to the way in which the thought of Karly Polanyi helps us to better understand why we face such a sharp dilemma in the wake of 50 years of political passivity with regards to the market economy.

Why Economy Remains a Liability for Kamala Harris Despite being Strongest in Quarter Century
Переглядів 257День тому
With inflation under control, job growth at record highs, and income increasing rapidly for the middle class, it would seem that the economic fundamentals might propel Kamala Harris's campaign as her neck-in-neck race against Donald Trump for the presidency enters the homestretch. Instead, recent polling indicates that three quarters of Americans think the economy is poor or fair. To account fo...
Prospects of Forever War Rise as Peace Recedes: Tragic Dynamics Lead to Broader War in Middle East

Over the last week, in rapid succession the leader of Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, was assassinated in a massive Israeli bomb strike, Israel launched a ground invasion of Lebanon, and Iran bombed Israel with ballistic missiles. In today's class we explore the broader political, regional and military context that drives an escalation of warfare in the Middle East. And we also explo...

In the aftermath of a second assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, and in the wake of the presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and Trump in which Harris sought to make Trump's tendency to be "be confused about fact" a central issue in this campaign, this week's class discusses what transformations in our media system are doing to norms surrounding political...
Harris Turns Tables on Trump in First Post-Policy, Post-Truth Debate of Modern Presidential Politics
Переглядів 181Місяць тому
In the first and perhaps only debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, Harris implemented a remarkably successful strategy, baiting Trump into revealing himself to be precisely what she asserted he is: angry, aggrieved, easily manipulated, and ultimately too detached from reality to be trusted with a second term as president. In so doing, not only did Harri...

As we enter the most important stages of the 2024 national elections, it is increasing clear that this is a contest not only between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, or the Republican and Democratic political parties, but also between fundamentally incompatible interpretations of the last forty years of American history and hence the appropriate models of democracy and leadership to respond to t...

As the Democrats concluded their nominating convention on Thursday night in Chicago, the stark contrasts between not only the two candidates but also between the ways in which the parties organized their efforts to display their visions of democracy and the future of American society were increasingly clear. Can Politics Save us From Our Institutions? Promising Early Signs as Kamala Harris Builds Momentum

Leftist be like, "I have a great F@€king idea! Why don't we try what was already tried in Angola, Algeria, Albania, Aragon, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Austria, Benin, Bulgaria, Burkina Faso, Belarus, Catalina, Cape Verde, Cuba, Cambodia, China, Chile, Congo, Czecklosevasia, Djibouti, Egypt, Estonia, Etreria, Ethiopia, Grenada Gambia, Ghana, Georgia, East Germany, Hungary, India, Iraq, North Korea, Kampuchea, Libya, Latvia, Lithuania, Marquetalia, Mozambique, Mongolia, Mali, Mahabad, Myanmar, Madagascar, Mauritania, Nicaragua, Poland, Romania, Russia, Syria, Slovenia, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leon, Tunisia, Tuva, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Venezuela, Yemen Yugoslavia, Zambia, Zanzibar and Zimbabwe which didn't just fail but catastrophically F@©king failed, with over 100 million butchered in the last century alone. But don't worry that wasn't real socialism and we know what we're doing. Though we can't agree on what socialism is exactly, let alone clearly define it. Coupled with the fact that we get everything not just wrong but catastrophically F@cking wrong, shouldn't stop you from surrendering your rights & liberties to an overreaching unaccountable all powerful central government for the common good. (What can go F@€king wrong) Because we Leftists are morally & intellectually superior. Though it's very difficult to tell, but we are. We're better than you evil Nazis & even this we get wrong. Because aside from us funding them in Ukraine Nazi also happens to be an acronym in German for the National Socialist German Workers Party formerly known as the German Labor Party a variation of the Marxist ideology. And words are violence and silence is violence and actual violence is mostly peaceful. I can not tell the difference between a man and a women. There just isn't any biological markers to make any kind of distinction."

Appreciate you drawing attention to something I have been noticing him alluding to (fixed, blocked) in speeches along with actions by state officials changing election laws around the country. Trump has alluded in the past to Stalin's famous quote about not caring who people vote for as who counts the votes is what is the real thing that matters... If they try to override the vote will Democrats use the power the Supreme Court has given to insure the integrity of the election or will they be the weak individuals we have seen over the years and not giving Republicans the same as they give

The Supreme Court is actually very balanced. And if you look at who voted for what recently, you would understand that to be true. The three radicals are the women on the left. The three people that are considered far right actually interpreted constitution the way the pounding bothers would’ve wanted it interpreted. Then you have three in the middle that are gonna decide how most votes go. It’s actually a very balanced and unpredictable court.

The economy is driving our politics. Look to Fortune 500 for relevance, not the political parties who represent commercial interests not the public interest. Political economics is one subject, it can't be divided. Finance and fiat drives the whole system. Commercial interests have always driven US politics in smoke filled rooms or on the golf course.

For example "GoldbergPeterjewdenstein" doesn't sound very American- I'll vote against him. A person with the name "Jamal Abdulah" also probably wouldn't be a good fit for America. You guys make things so utterly complicated when, in reality, voting is very simple. You either see people as part of your extended family, where those candidates have earned your trust or have been "vetted by the system" in some way or you don't. People who are salty over Trump are generally low information voters.

No other constitutional democracy in the western world works the way the US supreme Court does. - Other courts have term limits. - Other courts have jurisdictional rules that don’t let the court take whatever case they want - Other courts have ethics rules that are in fact enforced against the justices Courts can be fix by reformers that can protect our representative democracy from a Monarchic court (nothing can check or regulate us) that granted Monarchic status on the president

While I'm sure it would be an incredible uphill battle, I still feel Supreme Court Justices should have term limits, in addition to, ethical oversight considering every other federal employee falls under the standards of the Office of Government Ethics. The statements by Justice Thomas admitting he was unsure of what to disclose as gifts is clear evidence that they cannot self-govern themselves while maintaining a level of transparency in order to restore public confidence in them.
