As mentioned in the video, some might have heard that drone flights over the National Park Service lands and at Mt. Shukans are prohibited. That is both True and false. The devil is in the details. Below are the regulations regarding such flights. At no time during this flight did the aircraft take off, land or was operated from within NPS managed lands or Wilderness areas, and no animals were intentionally harassed nor humans flown over. A summary of the relevant regulations are below.
Regulations regarding aircraft flights over US National Parks:
The National Park service (NPS) prohibits the launching, landing and operation of unmanned aircraft, Unmanned Arial Systems, aka (UAS or "drones") on lands and waters administered by the NPS pursuant to 36 CFR 1.5. This 36 CFR 1.5 NPS jurisdiction of UAS activities within NPS lands ends at the park boundary. In a specific Q&A section posted on the NPS website regarding this topic the website clearly states that the NPS has no authority to regulate the launching, landing or operation of an unmanned aircraft from outside of the park boundary and the NPS regulations does not modify nor supersede any existing Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulation regarding flying over NPS land within the National Airspace system (NAS) are regulated only by the FAA and its regulations. Unmanned UAS flights in the NAS are managed per 14 CFR part 107. The FAA does in some specific situations and at certain defined locations have in place prohibitions of aircraft flying over select areas, including some NPS managed lands, and those no fly areas are defined at the FAA’s Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs) website, or by other specific FAA regulations. Such examples of specifically restricted airspace include the Grand Canyon, DC National Mall, etc..
In other words, UAS flights cannot take off, land or be operated from within the NPS park boundaries however flights which originate from outside the NPS boundaries can fly over and above NPS administered park lands because they are within the National Airspace System and the airspace is managed by the FAA, not the NPS. Exceptions are the above mentioned TFRs and specific restricted areas. The NPS has no jurisdiction to regulate or to enforce any FAA airspace regulations and only has jurisdiction to regulate the activities that occur on its lands. At no time during this flight did the aircraft take off, land or was operated from within NPS managed lands or Wilderness areas. There were no FAA TFR's or flight restrictions issued for this area at the time of the flights.
US Regulations regarding aircraft flights over Noise Sensitive and Wilderness areas:
The FAA issued Advisory Circular (AC) AC 91-36D which addressed pilots making Visual Flight Rules (VFR) flights of aircraft (manned or unmanned) near Noise Sensitive Areas over Federally Managed Lands. The intent of this AC is to request pilots to not fly low over certain areas to limit noise levels. There are examples of such noise sensitive areas defined in the AC and include National Parks, Wilderness areas, National Wildlife Refuges, and several others. AC 91-36D section 8. Is titled; Voluntary Practices, and specifies in paragraph a.; "Avoidance of noise sensitive areas, if practical, is preferable to over flight at relatively low altitudes." In addition, paragraph 8.b. reads: "Pilots operating noise producing aircraft...over noise sensitive areas, should make every effort to fly no less than 2000 feet above ground level (AGL)...". In addition, paragraph 8. d. of the AC clearly defines situations where this AC’s 2000 foot minimum altitude recommendation does not apply; Para 8.d. reads: "This advisory does not apply where it would conflict with FAA regulations... or where an altitude of less than 2000 feet AGL is considered necessary by the pilot to operate safely." FAA regulation 14 CFR part 107 governs flights of drones/ UAS aircraft and sets the maximum altitude of UAS aircraft at 400 feet above ground level (AGL). Above Ground Level (AGL) is determined at the aircraft position not the pilot's position.
In other words the 2000 foot minimum altitude for flights over noise sensitive Wilderness areas is not an actual prohibition but is instead a voluntary recommendation. Also, UAS flights are exempted from the AC’s 2000 foot minimum altitude recommendation because FAA regulation 14 CFR part 107 prohibits UAS flights above 400 feet AGL. The FAA 14 CFR 107 400 feet AGL maximum altitude limit for drones supersedes the AC 91-36D voluntary 2000 foot minimum altitude recommendation.

    All modern quads will fly long after you are doing damage to the cells. If you bring lions to 2.75v under load you are damaging those cells. You dont need graphs. Just know at what voltage your quad is half pack. Easy. You are making mountains out of mole hills. This is basic stuff.

    • @ValleyFPV
      @ValleyFPV 3 місяці тому

      To each their own. Amps are how much of the "gas" in the tank is consumed. Min Voltage is when the props wont turn fast enough to keep the quad in the air. I plan my flights based on how much amps is needed for a certain distance or climb. Not what voltage is used. The cells I use in my packs are rated to cut off at 2.5v. So When I fly I monitor voltage and amps used. Both. And Who cares If the cells are being damaged. I look at batteries as I do props: They wear out..have a limited life. Are meant to be used hard. They are consumables.

    The key is to review and change these settings before a flight, if you're flying a new terrain. It would be helpful if BF supports a dynamic GPS rescue altitude mode - for instance, imagine you are doing a long range that involves climbing way high up too, and let's say you lost the video on your return, when you have already descended significantly, and you have a dying battery. Initiating GPS rescue with max altitude setting will be disastrous, because the quad will then have to climb all the way up. So, if I get a chance to dynamically decide my GPS rescue altitude mode, it would be great in such scenarios. I will initiate GPS rescue with current altitude mode then.

  • @Sleeperknot
    @Sleeperknot 4 місяці тому

    Great video and nice to see the quad return home in one piece - you always learn a thing or two from flights like this. When you have directional antennas, it is always a good idea to keep tilting your head when video goes bad. And may be you could have stayed in the rescue mode a bit longer when you activated it for the first time on the way back - it could have given the quad the right heading, a better video and may be it would have helped realizing where home is. I have never done long range but I fly my 5 inch like 1-1.5 kilometer away sometimes. I have an omnidirectional vtx antenna and 800mW of vtx power.

    It should be noted that when charging the battery back up after getting your initial OSD mAh reading to see the charger in non-balancing mode. This will prevent extra mAhs from getting put in due to balancing of the cells. It's recommended to only do this with batteries you trust (new versus worn batteries) to get a better current scale number.

    Hey glad you are having fun with your bike. I have a similar one and IMHO would recommend you don't use the front motor all the time, if you want to improve your battery life. Unless it's struggling up a really tough hill or you're on sand it's a waste of charge. The only thing I find I use it for is to take off like a rocket at traffic lights to shock the commuting bunch in traffic lol. To avoid spinning front wheel, just use rear wheel for like a 6ft roll out then flip the AWD button and she gone! Then cut it off again when you get top speed. Be careful riding with both motors because you can slip out much easier due to the torque pull. Happy travels and safe motoring.

      Thanks for watching. Which is pretty much what I do. I use front motor only when needed. I generalky start off in Rear wheel only then kick in the front. Awesome flight, buddy! I'm loving your signal coverage analysis strategy. I'd totally hop on board, but with 6000 mah, I'm running short on time... Definitely thinking about making the jump to 8000mah. Oh, quick question: do you ever get eye fatigue from staring through the goggles? I don't know why, but with my Integra goggles, my eyes feel pretty strained... Never tried analog goggles, though. Maybe they're easier on the eyes... How about you?

      Thanks for watching. Fyi my battery packs are 10000mah packs I make from 21700 cells. I can fly to appx 8000-8400 safely. My goggles never bother me I like em. I use the hdmi feed from my ground station antenna array so that there is minimal weight on my old sore neck.

      @@ValleyFPV You've got some killer batteries, man. I'm not quite brave enough to DIY batteries just yet, but I'm thinking about giving it a shot soon. Maybe I didn't explain myself well; I'm not talking about the weight of the goggles, but my eyes start to itch when I'm looking through them, and it really bugs me when I'm flying. Not sure how it is with analog goggles. Anyway, I gotta say, love the tripod antenna setup you're rocking, genius move. Your vids are always killer, good luck up there!

    Hey, I noticed you're doing split files... I know you're not using Adobe Premiere, but I just wanted to give you my two cents on something you might consider; I have no problem editing video files even up to 25 minutes long (4K). The thing is, Adobe Premiere offers proxy editing... might make things easier for you. Just a suggestion

      Thanks for watching. I use Resolve and simply like to make a couple of files during a flight for easier backup and file management of the source braw files. And Gyroflow tends to process faster with smaller files.

    Awesome Video... didnt thought i would ever watch a Long-Range Pilot for tips around stable footage... i was so wrong. What are these BETA GEL dampeners? I know only the ALPHA GEL ones form Taica. Are these some cheap alternatives?

    If you like it silent, try the HQ 5x4x6 props. They are good to just put on a typical 7" motor. I guess like 20% less efficient and 20" less top thrust. Sound is very quiet.
