Kragerø (Norway): cinematic Norwegian nature
A cinematic view of the nature around the coastal town of Kragerø (Norway). A combination of timelapses and (drone) video captured during summer. An area with hundreds of tree covered islands with summer cabins that can only be reached by boat, situated in the South of the Telemark County.

    Second question: Why it there snow in the video, but at the same time it seems to be summer time somewhere else?

    • @OutdoorAhead
      @OutdoorAhead Рік тому

      I started in the end of spring in Colorado. At that time there was a few days of mild snow up at elevation in the Rocky Mountains. From there on I cycled at much lower elevation and the temperatures were rising towards summer. Therefore I had varying weather during the trip. As a rule of thumb: for every 100 meter you go up in elevation, the temperature drops 1 degree Celsius.

      There are cabins from the DNT (Norwegian trail association), some of which offer food and/or resupply. At their website you can find how to become a member for a year and at UT.no there are good maps with the different cabins in the area and if a membership is required or not. Good luck planning! Another time I was in the Hardangervidda there was still a lot of snow in July and I wished I had a winter sleeping bag. So it’s hard to give a general advice for the type of sleeping bag. My advice: check the weather and the amount of snow left. Finse station is high in the Hardangervidda. Additionally, the station has a webcam, so you can get a idea of how much snow there is and plan from there.

    Great shots in this video! As a filmer myself, planning to do a trekking tour there, i have to ask if there are options to charge your batteries at those cabins if you plan to sleep in a tent? Or do you just need to bring a few extra ones?

      Hi Alex, it’s a great area for shooting photos and videos. Most DNT cabins are very basic and do not have electricity. As you suggested, it’s a good idea to bring enough batteries. There are a few cabins that do have electricity, using the map from ut.no you can see de details of the cabins, but keep in mind that visiting the cabins might require a reservation this year due to COVID.

    I am very impressed good sir! It must have been quite an adventure of a lifetime! I was going to ask about aggressive dogs but I see someone else in another post already mentioned it. It might be a great second adventure for you. Thumbs up!👍

    • @OutdoorAhead
      @OutdoorAhead 3 роки тому

      It can be annoying when dogs give chase, it can be fun as well. I had a dog somewhere in Kansas that run with me for a few miles. It didn’t show any aggressive behaviour and didn’t run to close or in front of my bicycle. But I also had the moments where they weren’t so nice. I never had any real incidents, but potentially it can ruin your trip. Just have a plan how to deal with them. I had to look up the East Coast Greenway. Never heard about it. Another one for on the list. Along with the The Great American Rail-Trail when it’s finished.

      Hi Mark, thank you for your reply. The part of the American Discovery Trail I cycled goes through a lot of small towns. Especially the part in the Midwest has a lot of small communities with long stretches of low-populated areas between it. Because the trail follows historic routes like the Santa Fe Trail and old rail roads it brings you in little towns you would otherwise never visit.

    Was the trail very difficult to complete with a bicycle laden with camping gear?

    • @OutdoorAhead
      @OutdoorAhead 3 роки тому

      Hi Matthew, you have to get used of cycling with a bicycle with front panniers, because the extra weight makes steering a bit different. Especially when going slow you need to hold the handle bars tight and correct for movements. But I got used to that in the preparation before I left. Then there were the road conditions: in very soft sand a packed bicycle isn’t easy, but mostly the trail was good enough with the tiers I used. A few times I had to push it through the sand. Fallen trees were an interesting obstacle. Although the bicycle was packed full, I was able to lift it over the logs without having to take off the panniers. So my advice would be to bring light gear and have panniers that detach easily. I hope that gives you an idea! If you have anymore question. Feel free to send a message of my social media @outdoorahead.

      @@OutdoorAhead Thank you very much for your advice. Is there a bike or tires you recommend for such a journey?

    • @OutdoorAhead
      @OutdoorAhead 3 роки тому

      @@mattheww239 The ADT has varying road types: paved highways, gravel roads, sandy tracks, and small forrest roads. I think you should go for tires that do good in the 'overall picture'. A mountainbike tire will be great in a forrest, but gives to much friction on long stretches of paved roads, whereas a thin road tier will be ideal for making speed on roads, but will result in having to push you bike when you come to a trail with a bit of sand. A bicycle touring tire give a combination of these two. Often they are wider than regular road tires, but the center part of the tires is ticker, so when used on roads, you effectively have a smaller tier. I used the Schwalbe Marathon Plus during the ADT. After the trip I replaced them with the Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour. They are similar but the Tour version has a bit more profile and I hope that it wil do a bit better on dirt/sand roads in the future. There are various other good brands out there (I heard good stories about Michelin and Continental) so I advice to study and read about the different features they offer. One feature I would really advice is good puncture protection. Most bicycle touring tires have and thick layer that stops sharp objects from puncturing your inner tubes.

    • @OutdoorAhead
      @OutdoorAhead 3 роки тому

      @@mattheww239 One small anecdote: half way through my trip I noticed that my back tire had much more wear than my front tire. This is logical, because there is more weight on the back of the bicycle (and that's why you also try to move some weight to the front with front panniers). So I decided to switch the front and back tire to balance the wear and tear on the tires.
