My channel is about games
Nintendo's 2024 is kind of BORING... and that's okay.
For many, Nintendo's 2024 has been a mixed bag so far. With a lack of ambitious original system-seller games, MIA Nintendo Switch 2, and unclear plans for the rest of the year, 2024 has been very... boring. Let's discuss.

Nintendo's 30fps Problem
Переглядів 2,3 тис.8 місяців тому
Disclaimer: A game being 30fps does NOT make it a bad game. In this video, I simply pose the question of why certain Nintendo games are in 30fps, and how a higher frame rate would have improved the experience of playing them. With the recent release of Princess Peach Showtime, a persistent thought of mine has once again come into the light: WHY are certain Nintendo games in 30fps when they clea...

If it doesn't have it, I'm not getting it. Simple as that. The original Switch WON'T last forever - hardware failure is inevitable with aged systems, and the more complex and m modern the system the more likely that is. Hence, a SNES can still run perfectly well in 2024, because its components are simple, easy to repair, and not complicated, while a SWITCH is considerably more technologically complex and therefore more prone to degrading over time. There's a reason a lot of X-Box 360s and PS3 already don't work but an NES from 1985 very well may still work. Also, I hope they NEVER go back to discs. Discs are prone to scratching. Scratching makes games unplayable. Discs are inherently worse for that reason. ANYway, CARTRIDGE compatibility is key here. I don't give a DAMN about if my digital only games can transfer only - cool if they can but I buy PHYSICAL media - so if there's any way for the system to recognize both Switch 1 and 2 cartridges, then perfect. I'd buy it right away. Awesome. But as I said, if it ONLY accepts Switch 2 cartridges, being able to transfer over digital downloads is not going to sell me the system. What I want from Nintendo is to simply prioritize keeping physical media alive as long as possible. Now, obviously for a future system AFTER Switch 2, at some point moving it to a new physical medium will be inevitable just as they could never have kept the Gamecube and Switch compatible with NES and SNES cartridges - but for it to buy us another decade of life on those Switch cartridges would at least be a very appreciated thing. And maybe a future Switch 3 could somehow STILL use the same cartridge sizes and STILL stay compatible with Switch 1 and 2, in which case you could have 20, 30 years of life for a Switch 2 cartridge, which is amazing. That'd be like having a system that still can play your SNES cartridges. Actually, while on the topic, why NOT just bring back the SNES cartridge format? I mean, obviously the internals of the cartridge would change, but the size, shape, and mode of connection could be standardized across multiple console generations and a SNES sized cartridge could fit a LOT of data with modern technology. I don't mind going back to a physical, at-home system for the generation after Switch 2, but if they DO, maybe it can still detach a portion of it for less powerful on-the-go gaming while the base console at home that connects to the TV would do native 4k, would have a slot for Switch 1 and 2 cartridges built INTO the base console and ALSO a bigger cartridge slot for a SNES/N64 sized cartridge that can hold MUCH more data. How would you play that on the go? Simple: you remotely interface online with the home system, it does all the heavy lifting, and the handheld portion you take with you doesn't *need* the cartridge in it so long as it's in the home system (or digitally downloaded to the MUCH larger storage in the home system -you could have a 1 Tb hard drive on the home system and stop worrying about running out of space on the portable). To me, THAT's a good next direction for a "Switch 3" type system. A powerful home BASE that connects - long as you have internet, which in 10 years with Starlink everywhere will be no problem on most of earth - to the portable player that can dock at the home system. An even MORE genius move would be for Nintendo to basically offer their own internet service using the Starlink model - then, you're buying a subscription to high-speed internet that works anywhere on earth from them and their systems will always be able to get online - as will any computer or anything else you use on the go or at home. Do THAT, and you don't NEED the portable part of the system to do much more than receive the signal and stream games at high speed. For those games where you need the fastest fiber-optic connection at home, that's where plugging into the home base comes in. The screen of the portable, connected to the home base, would then become an extra screen which you can use as an additional mechanic/ display in games. A branch into Nintendo gaming laptops could also be awesome, IF they have good battery life and aren't loud and hot.
The worst part is if the switch 2 doesn't have backwards compatibility it would still do pretty well, but hey thats more of a reason to keep your old switch!
backwards compatibility. or something with ai.
I've heard this whole "60 fps needs to be a min!!" thing for a while. Honeslty I can't tell the difference. Maybe its because im blind. But i cant really tell the difference. Yeah i see slow down whenever i play. Maybe i should try to play something like halo 3 on og hardware next to my pc running MCC and my two monitors. But i really can't tell the difference most of the time
mario odyssey looks good but luigis mansion 3 has better graphics mario odyssey had to use dynamic resolution to run at 60fps so its native resolution is 900p
I don't blame about it
Well if I’m being honest I thought Super Mario Odyssey was quite the shift for 3D Mario games. It turned a whole new direction. I mean the game that isn’t odyssey that I think Odyssey is the most similar to is Super Mario Sunshine. But it has all these new features like the continued exploration and the capture ability. It also has the most versatile move set I’ve ever seen Mario use. I hope to see something close to that in the next one. And I’m not opposed to Nintendo taking transitions further either.
April direct , July switch 2 reveal (like how Oled & lite got revealed via online July shadowdrop then followed by a September fall presentation to finally get the reveal and lineup for the “switch 2” in 2025. Idk makes sense to me 🤷♂️ waiting till June now to reveal the line up would be an long ahh wait.
The you fall off the bed and wake up from that dream
They usually keep the big stuff, in the ladder half of the year. But even then, the biggest title I could see is Dk or Metroid Prime 4(which we still don't have idea when that will release).
ALSO, EMULATORS ISN'T "Improving the service" IF THEY WANTED THEY WOULD ACTUALLY ADD SERVERS
the fact you thought nintendo kept these servers on for a long time....... is a discrase since the PS3 and Xbox 360 will still have online services active tomorrow.
I’d honestly be happier if we didn’t get a direct this month either, that or it’s a really meh one with nothing to show. Just want them to announce this new thing already.
Yeah, I don't expect any upcoming direct, if there is one, to reveal anything too crazy. And I agree, I'd like to see the next system revealed sooner rather than later. It's really dragging at this point.
@@robbiibobbiiHowever, there was drought in 2023. The new console didn’t released then, so I think there isn’t evidence besides rumours. It is still possible that they delay it into holiday 2025…I think they are slowing down because they can get away with the drought. I think we may need to see another unseen level of slowdown before next generation
I don’t really care that Nintendo is going really slow but I’m exiting for what’s coming next
Honestly, same. At first, I was pretty disappointed by the delay of next-gen. But now I'm feeling like the wait will be well worth it in the end. I'm glad we still have some games to play this year, but the real exciting stuff is just around the corner.
@@robbiibobbii yup
I’m waiting until June before making any conclusion
Good mindset. Nintendo still has the time to change the course of 2024, but we'll just have to wait and see!
I never got to play WFC, but I got to at least play NN. i dont care about the switch. its not the same as the wii, ds, and 3ds
10:54 There could be Metroid Prime 4 as a launch game and 3D Mario as a launch window game since the former was in development for much longer than the latter.
Nintendo online is not even par with online services of few indie games 😢 !
maybe the reason games like animal crossing and princess peach showtime. is because their simpler games and not action and content packed like Mario odyssey. (Sorry if I sound like a smart ass. I'm not trying to.)
As a guy who owns a PC and get 165fps. I actually don't mind the 30fps. I got use to it pretty quickly and am enjoying Tears of the Kingdom despite it being 30fps.
this guys yappin
Yappin straight facts lol
first of all. you'll mostly get used to the framerate when playing the game. it's also not about the framerate it's about the experience you have. now sure your opinion is fine it's just an opinion anyways
The switch is incredibly weak. It's embarrassing that the Xbox 360 and PS3 are stronger...
uh no they aren't lol you must be talking about the Xbox One and PS4 however the Switch is almost the size of a cellphone with a chip made in 2014 so given that it's not that bad
@@AtracBreezy The switch was weak from the start. Meanwhile Nintendo releases Wii u ports that run horribly and Nintendo drones eat it up like EA fans when the new sports game comes out.
@@milkdab6977 yeah it was weak from the start but it’s still more powerful than the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. Also what Wii U port runs poorly? All of them either run at the same fps but full 1080p or better.
I too wonder why it's Princess Peach Showtime and many others are 30fps. However, I don't really notice the difference. I just appreciate the game. (and no, I'm not a casual gamer.)
The human eye can only see at a maximum of 11 fps anyways, so you're just wrong
you're telling.me you don't notice a difference between 11fps and 60fps
I think you generally got it. It's all a mixture of game engine, graphics and resolution, underlying systems (what's happening on screen or under the hood), and developer talent/budget/time. Take your two big examples, Super Mario Odyssey and Princess Peach Showtime. SMO was a high profile, high budget production made by a premiere internal studio using a bespoke internal engine fine tuned to the Switch's specs. It NEEDED to shine, so they made sure it looked and ran excellently. In contrast, Showtime was a lower scope, lower budget game made by an external studio using a jack-of-all-trades engine (Unreal Engine 4). UE 4 games CAN look good on Switch (Pikmin 4 is gorgeous, and it's on UE4) but often struggle due to the hardware. Methinks UE 4 is ever so slightly too much for Switch.
So what the f*ck do you want? 60fps?
uhh yeah? obviously
Is it just me or do I see no difference between 60 and 30 for games
That's kinda weird
finally someone adresses this
the switch is literally a modified tablet
We cant even get 60 fps standard on xbox playstation
The switch is my least favorite console ever. The awful controllers and the bad framerate issues on most ganes.
At a certain point, 30fps becomes a part of the style of the game itself. Maybe its what im used to, but when i see people up Mario 64 or BOTW to 60fps, it looks off. The jankyness of Mario's movement or Link's arms swaying when running is lost, which was aided by the archaic graphics of 64 and the artstyle of BOTW.
Mario 64 at 60 fps would be p weird tbh
There are definitely games that are built from the ground up to run at 30 fps with animations made around that. But I think being content with 30 fps ultimately hinders the industry.
I disagree. There may be an argument for 30 FPS being some sort of style however if the mark is 30 and frames drop consistently it's just not going to be pleasant.
Yea the Nintendo always has had a 30fps issue but so has almost every single console aside from ps5 and Xbox series X. When the Nintendo switch came out the ps4 and Xbox one had already been out and almost every single game has been 30 fps the switch is also very weak. Nintendo has also always had a 30 fps issue but mainly just their systems being weaker, I’d say it’s more of an inconvenience then a big issue as most first party Nintendo games are single player ( aside from Mario kart and smash bros). It is an inconvenience though and Nintendo being this big company in 2024 and still being 30 fps is a bit dumb.
You are so right about odessey. 60fps no dramas. Outstanding visuals and perfect controls with 60fps on a near 8 year old game. I totally agree with you and was Thinking the same when I was playing the demo of peach.
The comparison doesn't work when the whole Video is just 720p 30fps lol
??
LOL. I was actually trying to showcase and compare the visual fidelity of each game as opposed to the frame rate itself. One of the points I wanted to make was simply that the games running in 60fps were much more complex in terms of visuals and the amount of things happening on screen at once. Nonetheless, thanks for pointing that out 😁
Nice video, but I feel like you apologize for your opinion too much (several times throughout it), the video would flow a bit better without it. Saying that people shouldn't get angry just once at the start should be enough. But other than that, well made video
Thanks for the kind feedback. Yeah, I'm a bit too careful not to ruffle any feathers lol. You're right, though, and i'll take this into account for my future videos. Thanks for watching, and i'm glad you enjoyed the vid!
@@robbiibobbii You're welcome
One big reason: the tegra x1 wasn't really a 'custom' chip. it's literally just a tegra x1 stuffed inside and devs had to make the most of it with some of the cores being disabled. It's running on unreal which doesn't seem to play nice with switch in terms of scalability. This is not a programmer talent issue, they just don't have the time to be optimising a game like this to achieve 60fps when they could start with a goal of 30 and be less restricted with the scope of their vision. If they could have made it 60fps without *significant* effort and time then they would have. It isn't just about what you see on the screen. For switch 2 I think they will be able to achieve some 60FPS games but I don't expect a huge difference compared to this gen since they'll probably be more focused on higher resolution which they'd have an easier time hitting given the super competent gpu. Casual gamers don't care as long as it's playable, they do care a lot about resolution since it can make a game look ugly on their TV.
Thanks for your insight! Yeah, I certainly agree that if they wanted to, they *could* do it. These games *could* have a higher frame rate. It would just require more time, of course. And yes, next gen would certainly make it easier to hit that 60fps, but most likely won't be the case for all games. Still, I would personally prefer they focus on performance and frame rate over resolution any day of the week.
@@robbiibobbii it isn’t just time, there are a lot of variables and sometimes an inconsistent 45-60fps is worse. I’d like to see more 60fps games moving forward though
I think it’s because games like Kirby and Peach uses engine designed for next gen, could’ve been for the switch pro, which could both be scrapped with the cancellation. I believe Nintendo would not want to push more detail. I think the definition of causal gamers are that they don’t care about resolution, there is no significant difference to playing 1080p and 4K DLSS with 4K TVs. Therefore, I believe there will be more open world games and they can run in 60fps. I do not expect for Pokémon or third party though.
The switch is a potato. That's why.
You're not really wrong about that. But, I think this issue is sort of a mixture between Nintendo's game development process itself and the Switch hardware. But yea, the Switch's power is absolutely a large contributing factor to games with poor performance.
'Promo SM'
The reason Nintendo is pushing the release of switch 2 into oblivion is exactly because they felt the launch would be weak if they did right now
A new 3D Mario wouldn’t hurt the launch of switch 2 but if it’s backward compatible and they are patching and up scaling and frame rate improving existing games, then I think that will be enough for the new switch to sell well, with the prospect of future titles. That’s my opinion.
They are pushing the limit with zelda already, I think they will rather focus on 60fps and quantity instead of graphical detail. I suggest that the console will only be the same level to PS4/Xbox one at least in terms of graphics. They can still give us PS4 Pro/Xbox one X CPU though.
Going toward, I think linear and open mario will be clearly separated. I also doubt they use mushroom kingdom, instead it can fully lean into a the sunshine and odyssey style with very few linear segment. Instead, I think they will have a linear title like galaxy 3 planned down the line.
My proposal for a switch successor: Nintendo Attach & Switch Hardware Spec: Power: about equivalent 2013 version PS4/Xbox one or steam deck, 1.5 tflops portable and 2 tflops docked Graphics: 1080p30/720p60 OLED handheld, 1440p30/1080p60 docked Same cartridge slot except with a piece missing, allows for switch compatibility but new game can’t fit in switchs’ cartridge slot 7” version sold for $349, with a mini version(5.5”) that have LCD for $299 From factor/gimmicks: A screen and 2 joy-con similar to the switch The joy-con is modified to remove joy-con drift as well as the addition of pointer control The new joy-con have a mechanism to swap out the directional button for a D-pad(included) and swap out the main button for a GCN layout(layout piece sold separately) The switch screen also have a piece of slide rail at the top, allowing the new dock(which is sliced into) to show the screen of the switch The top slide rail of the attach & switch can also let the switch ‘attach’ other accessories(sold separately) e.g. A screen accessories to put on top of it for a DS-like experience but can also be held separately with plugged in joy-con for a more Wii U like one A front/rear camera + microphone accessories allows for AR stuff but also can be used separately with the kickstand for motion tracking/allowing the game to work when docked A 3D screen accessories for everything the regular screen accessories do but also have a 3D slider to allow for stereoscopic 3D A plastic piece allows for VR experience(not as great as PS/Xbox) Software/Switch Online: Street pass is coming back, this time used the joy-con to track steps and stuff using the motion sensor The attach & switch have more software features like Wii, Wii U, DSi and 3DS A photo app for some photo editing A sound app for play around with recorded audio A world news app similar to the Wii A weather app A camera app Mytendo: a upgraded Mii with clothing support Nintendoverse: Nintendo’s take on the metaverse, which allows for interaction for your Mytendo and also chat with others with picture, share flip note and have game community. This time with ai assisted filtering Switch online is altered to have 2 tiers P2P online is now free Base tier for $29.99 for NES, SNES, sega genesis, master system, N64, Gameboy and GBA games alongside dedicated servers Expansion pack for $39.99 for GCN, Dreamcast and DS games at launch, with Wii and 3DS later
I think they need huge games. 3D mario needs to be this amazing thing, mario kart needs to be one of their most ambitious and honestly best looking games they've ever made to get people off MK8D, Animal crossing needs to be practically a live service etc... Unless there's a really really good 'gimmick' they have to go so crazy with the initial lineup
Yeah, they'll definitely have to do their best to convince people with some amazing next-gen titles. I think they'll have a big game or two at the launch. One of them is most likely 3D Mario, and the next Mario Kart will probably release within the first few months.
@@robbiibobbii yeah would be a good combo to have that, maybe that Pokémon legends game in the winter too for cross gen
@@robbiibobbiiI think Bowser’s Fury make an open world 3D Mario less impressive. Don’t get me wrong, it would still be a great experience, but some of the mechanics they are gonna introduce is already there. Besides, I think zelda is so magical to causal because the Zelda they are familiar with(like a link to the past or ocarina of time) is so different to breath of the wild. Therefore, I think DK is a better choice because of its balance of familiarity and obscurity. I think there will also be a fail safe in the form of Mario kart 9 for some people don’t core about single player adventure. There WILL BE innovation with Nintendo even with Furikawa.(I think he is only different from Iwata is the approach of marketing)
@@QnjtGWonQNqVsbYyzjx4 Yeah, I see what you mean about Bowser's Fury. But I think they could find a way to make the next game much more impressive, especially given the new hardware. They will likely drastically expand upon the concepts introduced in Bowser's Fury as well. Also, I too would love to see a new DK game!
Needs another big open world game to begin with
That does seem to be a recipe for success lol. Possibly open world 3D Mario? BotW may have started a pattern for Nintendo to follow..

I don't think Arlo's persistent display idea really works. Whatever they do to build on the Switch's concept is going to need to be something that can work in docked AND handheld. If you need a TV in docked mode to use dual screens, that undermines the concept. How would you get dual screens in handheld mode and tabletop mode? I think if you're adding dual screens, they have to be detachable. That's the only way it can work with every mode. When you're in handheld, it would be like a DS or 3DS, a dual screen clamshell device with both Joycons attached. When it's in docked mode, you separate one and dock it and keep the other attached to the Joycons and then it works like a Wii U. And then in tabletop mode you could do something like flip the screens so they're both facing away from each other or detach them so each player gets a Joycon and a screen. Something like that would provide a demonstrable improvement over the Switch concept in all modes and would make it even more versatile than it already is. So if they can get that concept to work at a reasonable price and quality, that's absolutely the direction they should go for.
If the Switch 2 rumors are true at all, I doubt Nintendo would gamble losing their player base, just in hope of reselling the same games again on similar, more powerful hardware. People like to pretend Nintendo thinks like Sony and Microsoft but, history says that’s a foolish assumption. Nintendo wants to sell consoles just as much as games.
it will have it, but they will charge you to “upgrade” or rerelease the games to 4k
If the switch to does not have backwards compatibility then I hope it is finally the moment when people realize that Nintendo is a shity company and I hope it's finally the time that they go under
