Hello! I’m Rosalie. I use hand-painted illustration to honor the places and creatures that often go unnoticed.
Recently, I was honored to be the Artist-in-Residence at Great Smoky Mountains National Park and with the National Audubon Society. My clients include the Smithsonian and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
I am also an educator. So far, I’ve enjoyed teaching watercolor & outdoor observation workshops in schools, national parks and REI stores. I’ve also taught over 60,000 online to observe & paint nature as a Top Teacher at Skillshare. My nature-inspired watercolor workbook, Watercolor in Nature, was published by Page Street Publishing Co. in November 2021. My forthcoming book, Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountains: An Artist's Journey, will be published in Sept. 2024.
Thanks for stopping by!

Book Reveal: "Tiny Worlds of the Appalachian Mountains" by Rosalie Haizlett
I'm so excited to share my second book with you!
"Tiny Worlds" chronicles my journey throughout the Appalachian Mountains, as I hiked slowly and documented the tiny plants, animals, and fungi that I encountered. I painted what I saw with watercolor and the result is a hardcover book that's bursting at the seams with 150 paintings, illustrated maps, personal essays, and prompts for nature journaling.
Suitable for children and adults. Published by Mountaineers Books on Sept. 1st, 2024.

Starting my first perpetual nature journal! 🌼🦎
Переглядів 9 тис.Рік тому
Developed by botanical artist Lara Call Gastinger, perpetual nature journals are a way to visually document our discoveries outdoors on a regular basis. I've heard about this method for years and I'm finally getting around to starting my own! Here's the basic idea: 1. Get a blank journal. If you want to incorporate wet media like watercolor, make sure the paper can withstand that. 2. Think abou...

A chill (and chilly 😉) bird walk where I share a little bit about my experience getting more interested in birds over the last 4 years. My favorite learning resources have been my field guide (DK's Pocket Birds of North America, Eastern Region), Audubon magazine, the Merlin ID app, and Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine.

Rediscovering my creativity | Artist vlog 🎨

I've been thinking a lot lately about how I've let my perfectionism silence certain aspects of my creativity. In this studio chat, I share the mindset behind my recent efforts to embrace new creative pursuits, even if it feels vulnerable or embarrassing to do things that I'm not "good" at. If any of this resonates with you, let me know in the comments! I'd love to cheer you on. :)

Hi Rosalie, I am such a Bug fan of YOU! I love your adventurous spirit and nature inspired/inspiring Art!! Book is preordered and I can’t wait!! Love your first book and enjoyed Skillshare classes🙏😊 You have me now on a mission to find lung lichen like you found up here in White Mountains 😂🤷♀️
Aw, I appreciate your kind words so very much! Thanks a bunch for preordering, and I hope you can find some nice green lung lichen!!
I didn’t see that one when I was out there. I will keep an eye out next time
I'm going to order this book ASAP! Glad I found your channel. I am surprised you don't have many, many more subscribers.
I just got your Watercolor in Nature book for my birthday...... I'm so excited to stop borrowing it from the library and really get into it!! I love this room revamp and your book selection is on point!!

It's such a simple, lovely story! It'll never go out of style :)

Whaaat that's amazing! I'd be so honored to have this book in your classroom.

What artist gets to design beer cans!! Awesome!
"What if...?" is the artists greatest tool, thanks for the great video.
careful, wash your hands! Many salamanders in our area(Oregon) are very poisonous to handle.
Great idea! And what a handsome salamander and excellent rendering of it. We have a somewhat similar California/Baja garden slender salamander that I nature journaled before. Thanks for the inspiration!
I loved this thank you!
Super fun video. I’m getting into nature journaling this year.
wonderful idea!
ihr habt die Mögllichkeit euch mit Jon Young zu beschäftigen. Dann braucht ihr keine Tiere fangen oder Pflanzen abschneiden. Eingeborene brauchen sowas nicht um andere Lebewesen zu erfahren.
That perpetual idea is amazing
Please dont take animals away from their habitat! Its unneccessary stress for the animals and you probably have germs on you that arent good for it. Do you know hoe many fire salamanders we lost due to spreading germs/viruses that got more and more agressive? Just take a photo please. And dont rip out plants (if its from your garden, ok) For every outdoor person (and especially those who want to teach respect for nature and our environment) goes: Take nothing but pictures Leave nothing but footprints Kill nothing but time
Great, inspiring movie. Thanks for sharing! Keep walking and admiring nature :-)
This is so inspiring! After a recent move to a more remote, mountainous region of Colorado I have been exploring a ton of different art forms. I’m finally finding the freedom to do so. One things is leading to another and through a search for “nature journaling” on UA-cam I have found your page. Hoping to take one of your courses soon! Really enjoying your videos 😊
Also, so glad to see Mountain Laurel made the cut on the map 😉 🌱
Great video discussion! I'm finally about to retire and can't wait to spend more time on all my creative interests, which range from completing a novel to sewing to sketching plein air to bonsai. "Let's see what happens" is my life long mantra. Being creative, having fun, and playing with others should be our focus, because its something you'll never regret doing. You should check out the Table Rock Writing workshop held near Asheville in August, because it includes a songriters section similar to the old time music camp you just did. Fun!!!🎉

Thank you so much for sharing! The kids and I watched your video - very encouraging!
Beautiful drawings! The kids and I watched and loved the close up of your finds outside! This concept reminds me the Charlotte Mason “Book of Firsts” - not that she discovered it but rather the CM community enjoys doing this. It’s a journal where one records the first time seeing something and it cycles through the years. You can record first snow, honeybees, specific birds in spring, and the journal can be divided into any way you’d like as well - daily, weekly, monthly. Thank you for the video - very encouraging!
Love that you showed how people who don't have access to grand scenic and nature rich forests can still find cool nature right beneath their feet wherever they are.
I just came across your book in Michael’s on Monday… I just completed the Green Frog …fiddleheads we’re difficult for me.. thank you for pulling me back to watercolor as I have a love / dislike with WC can’t wait to do more of your tutorials
Just a word: Beautiful! I’m ordering my copy today.
I bought one also. Going to learn water coloring.
Looking forward to this class! But I must know… what is the name of the small paint palette set you show in the video?? I can’t quite read it, but I think it says “The Hushwing Collective”? Gorgeous colors! 😍
Yes, it's Hushwing brand. Unfortunately, they're no longer creating paint, but other handmade paint brands I love include The Art of Soil and Greenleaf Blueberry :)
I love this idea, thanks for sharing! Such great art captures of the plants and salamander 😊
Lovely❤
Cool. We are big fans at my house. Always look forward to seeing your new stuff!
You should do an Augusta class on map making!!!!!!!
Just wonderful! Great job!
I enjoyed your video thank you.
I love this! Integration of history and current experience! Impressive hair dad! This so makes me want to visit the area!
This was very much a feel good video 😊 I enjoyed it thoroughly !
You are multi-talented and an inspiration to others. Keep it up. Thanks for sharing. 😃
fun velog
i also had so many animal dolls that i named them and write funny poems and little narratives about them. i use to draw cartoons. make very simple animal origamies. i use to care more about clothing. i even had a simple toy keybkard. that fell and broke.i had fishes chicks and turtles . i was very creative as a child but same happened to me. i choose my art as career and after 18 years it got a little boring for me. nowdays i try my other artistic interests to get more variety in my life. so this video resonated with me. thanks
that red back salamander looks like a worm at first. very interesting. i lately discored nature journaling, it is fun. even tho i draw for 18 years now professionally. and i pretty good at observation. it improved my concentration while drawing.
