O18 Accidentally Knocked from Nest 7/20/24
After dark, around 9:31 pm, a raccoon appeared on the left side of the nest. Mom was calling out. A short time after, Mom flew from the nest at the same time that O18 was lifting her wings in a defensive move. Mom clipped O18, causing her to lose her balance and fludge from the nest. Sounds of the raccoon on the ground have been heard on cam. We will see what the morning brings. Fledge watch was to start tomorrow, 7/21/24. #morainepreservationfund #morainestatepark #osprey #ospreynest

We have been having some solar charging issues with the cam but are still getting some views. Dad brings a fish, Mom comes in and the osprey family is doing great! O18 is expected to fledge around July 21st.

Following the newspaper, Dad brought in a piece of plastic. It almost immediately blew near the chick and covered it at times with the wind blowing. Dad's idea of a blanket fort perhaps? Mom eventually moved it and most of it blew from the nest.

O18 Flips Over & Stuck - First Time 060424

At 11:01 O18 fell backwards into the nest bowl and was stuck for 40 minutes. Mom and Dad did what they could. Eventually, with Mom standing next to the chick, O18 was able to get upright. Look for the video of the second tumble in the same day!
O18 Tumbles AGAIN - 060424 1334

O18 took another tumble into the nest bowl, landing on its back at 13:34 on 6/4/24. Again, Mom and Dad did what they could and finally, after 5 hours, O18 was able to get upright again. After two small feedings while upside down, O18 still had food in its crop. Stay in the bowl O18!

@@schen5425 Unfortunately no. I visited the nest area the following morning. Evidence indicates the chick did survive the fall but did not survive the night on the ground.
@mnhuff (sigh) had that feeling. I made attempts to find the live cam, but to no avail. Thank you for the response. Im saddened to know this. 😔💔
@@schen5425 I’m sad too. The cam is still active but the solar panels are having trouble charging with the cloudy conditions. Sun is to come out shortly and I’m hoping it will be up later today and we can get a glimpse of mom and dad.

Ospreys make the most annoying sounds in all of Birddom. Poor owl having to listen to all that racket! It's all going to hell in a hand-basket with a nest in it and a bunch of osplets to get eaten by superior raptors and snakes, raccoons and foxes, and coyotes.
Great footage! Life in the wild is not always "warm & fuzzy". I too was disappointed at the Ospreys inability to fight off this attack. A biologist friend advised me that the Great Horned Owl is an apex predator with a serious advantage at night. Osprey defend best by "Stooping", diving towards their predators and "buzzing" or even hitting them. However, they do not have the night vision to do any serious "Stooping" and the owls are used to birds harassing them (night and day). Terrible for the Osprey, but if MPF could get a camera on the owl nest, it would be nice to see the owl chicks getting fed.

The female did try. Unfortunately, lack of night vision made defending difficult.
When a raptor kills other raptors, they often sever the victim's spinal cord at the base of the skull!
The owl removed the heads of all three chicks.
Just stumbled across this, wasn't aware of the longstanding behavior of these (warring tribes) it's a bit of a shock.
@@thomasmleahy6218 Although the battle between owls and ospreys is longstanding, this attack was particularly brutal. I've never seen an owl kill all chicks at once. It only consumed one of the three.

This is so terrible. I am so mad that the mom did not even try to help her young.
Mom did everything she could to drive the owl away. She has no night vision and also has little experience with attacking anything but fish. She came into the nest, she flew at the owl, she even struck it when it returned. Unfortunately, it's difficult to defend against the night's expert hunter.
