The Wolfang GA420 camera I tested has a firmware version V2.1.0.1-B. I have also tested a newer version of this camera (with USB-C support) and it is version V3.1.0.5-B and both cameras feature the 'Distortion Calibration' function. You'll find this function on the sub-menu located below the 'Effect' button and above the 'Diving Mode' button.

After my message above, I did some research and found that 'Anti Shake(EIS)' and 'Distortion Calibration' cannot both be on at the same time (you need to turn one off for the other to appear - I turned 'Anti Shake(EIS)' off and 'Distortion Calibration' appeared). Wolfang should have a better manual for it!

Yes, this Cine lens can be used to take still photographs, and YES, I have used this lens many times for astrophotography with great results.

Actually it is the same camera, but it is a newer version of the GA420 with a few upgrades such as USB-C for charging and microphone input. It also has a few software upgrades such as wide, medium and narrow digital lens selection.

Thanks. Hopefully my soon-to-arrive GA420 has the USB-C port. I have done some research into the use of an external microphone (other than the included external microphone and possibly the Akaso external microphone) with this camera. People have said that it does NOT work. Is it possible for you to test this? Many thanks.

@@toant453 This camera works with the AKASO external microphone X0035H3ZAN, although I find the Akaso mic emphasizes more of the high end (treble) while recording, whereas the included Wolfang mic emphasizes more of the low end(bass) when recording.

Not really sure what you are doing, but when I use the Shellbox bluetooth remote, I can definitely record video at 4K-30. My advice, don't use the Shellbox app, just use the Shellbox remote.

Yes, the 2.7K is very good indeed. Perhaps it looks better than 4K, due to the lighting. The 2.7K was recorded on a bright, cloudless, sunny day, whereas the 4K video was recorded under cloudy conditions. On a bright day the camera would automatically shoot at a smaller aperture which leads to a sharper image with greater depth-of-field. Just my guess.

“Horrible” that’s a bit harsh. I’ll admit this is no GoPro, and the 60fps video sucks, but everything else (shot at 30fps)looks sharp, colourful and very useable. Besides, unless you plan on using slow motion in post production, 60fps is just another ‘specification’ that makes a camera sound important but is actually pretty useless in most situations as it doesn’t make the video look any better.

@@ExploreVideo-cr3eh@ExploreVideo-cr3eh 60 fps is super important for action cameras, but FYI, GoPro cameras are also pretty bad. The problem with this camera is that it cannot handle dark scenes. Another huge problem is that there is no way to swap batteries or extend memory, which is a dealbreaker for most people.

No, it’s not really an app. It just uses Bluetooth to allow the remote switch to activate the shutter release, zoom the lens and use the reverse lens to take selfies but it does limit you to shooting 1080 video. BUT, if you do not open the app, you can use the camera as you normally would, just connect the bluetooth and use the remote only (without the app) as a shutter release, this will allow you to shoot 4K.

I recorded us on separate channels ( 2x mono recordings) then I mixed them in editing. I find this method works best for my needs.

This camera accepts a wired microphone with a USB-C connection. I had several microphones like that and tried them all but nothing worked. I ended up contacting customer service for XTU and had to order a compatible mic. directly from them.

Yes, that curved look is due to the wide angle lens. Some of these action cameras have a feature called 'distortion correction' which minimizes that curved look ...unfortunately the Surfola SF530 does NOT have that function.

That Timelapse was done on a very windy day so some ‘extra’ movement was recorded. And yes, with my GoPro 8, I just strap it in and turn it on and it automatically balances.

I am not aware of any burst mode operation while the camera is inside the waterproof housing. On my iPhone while in photo mode, if I hold down the volume button it records video, until I release the button. If I repeatedly press the volume it takes still shots, the same way as repeatedly pressing the shutter button. But there is no access to the volume button while in the housing.

Ah yes, A nice way to combine a pre-programmed zoom with an active camera movement.

I am not aware of any bluetooth helmet intercom connectivity, but YES, this camera will operate while being charged, or even without a battery as long as it's connected to a power source.

Ya, I was not pleased at all with this camera.

Yes, I agree the EIS was not the best when I tested it in dwindling evening light shooting at 1080. I should have tested under better lighting conditions, However this camera IS capable of shooting 4K30 while using EIS in 'normal' or 'super' mode. It will also record 'gyro data' for use with stabilizing apps.

I have not had a problem with over heating as I trend to use the Shellbox only while snorkelling, so the water would keep it cool, however if the phone were left in the housing on a hot day and it was not being used underwater then I could see the potential for heat to build up, but I have not experienced that so far.

You cannot turn screen on and off while underwater. You must first ‘unlock’ the screen prior to putting into the Shellbox case.

It is a nice lens if you don’t mind going all manual.

Before you put the phone into the case, go to settings - display and brightness - and set ‘auto lock’ to never. Just set it back to what you normally use when finished with the housing.

That is a hard question. If it's just based on price I would say the SURFOLA SF530 is my favorite (under $100) action camera considering the quality of the video and the included wireless microphone, although sadly I don't see this particular camera advertised anymore. In the under $200 range I'd say the Wolfang GA420 is a great choice due to it's video performance, dual screens, external mic , and waterproof without a housing. This latest review (XTU S6) I'd also recommend, although it is not waterproof without a housing.
