Glowforge Aura Series Part 1: Unboxing & Our Honest Impressions
What laser did you use to cut through the mirror smoothly?
Hi, I recently came out with a new mirror acrylic product idea that I think diode laser can cut through. Would you mind testing out for me?
What idea do you have? 😃
@@Flemingoriginals007 the mirror acrylic that the market has of right now is made of clear acrylic, this is why diode lasers like the Glowforge Aura has difficulty cutting through it.. my product idea is mirror acrylic made out of black acrylic and from my research, diode laser machine has no problem cutting through black acrylic
@@Flemingoriginals007 not sure if my reply was deleted or somehow i didn't click the reply button after i type it out. Anyway, my product idea is making mirror acrylic out of black acrylic. The reason why diode laser machine like the Glowforge Aura cannot cut through the mirror acrylic that the market has of right now is because it is made out of clear acrylic. From my research, diode laser machines can cut through black acrylic so that's why i thought of this solution but I do not have a diode machine to test it out
According to Glowforge support, I was told it can cut 5/32 maple plywood with the Aura machine, when I asked for the settings they didn't have it. Do you know what the settings are? I need that size for my laser-cut wood earrings. Thank you for all the wonderful information you guys provide
Thank you so much! The best way to figure it out is to do a test file cut. You will be able to find the best settings. Here is a video for how to create your own if you don’t have the paid version of Glowforge. ua-cam.com/video/qdy-k5jm_S0/v-deo.htmlsi=8SQCPWS81I_fkBSa Please let us know if you need more info than this. We will do our best to help! Have a fantastic day!

Thank you for this video!! I bought mine a year ago and I wish I had this video. Granting that this would’ve been my only option for a Glowforge financially, it would be nice to know all this before hand.
Thank you! I totally understand the financial aspect. I am glad that it is an affordable option. Thank you for taking the time to comment!
Xtool m1 ultra
Thank you!
What was the other laser cutter you used. Acrylic is literally the only reason i wanted a glowforge in the first place.
Hi, the other machine is the Thunder Bolt. The Aura can cut some acrylic, but it cannot cut mirror, clear, blue… Glowforge’s CO2 lasers can cut acrylics. What kind of acrylic were you hoping to cut? Thank you for the question!
600+ for an 8 1/2 by 11 cutting platform and slow speed? I don’t think so, I’d rather get a Creality Falcon. Glowforge needs to lower their prices. Their machines are way too expensive, no thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope you enjoy your Falcon!
Can this cut 10 mil Mylar ?
We have been trying to find the answer. We are going to order some and try.
For make puzzles
What material do you want to use for your puzzles? Do you want to do sublimation puzzles? Jigsaw puzzles? Name puzzles? You should be able to make puzzles; you will simply need to be creative with the materials. Also, it may take a while to make each one, but it is possible. Let us know, and we will be happy to help you brainstorm solutions.😃
Now I feel confused...I'm thinking about buying the glow forge aura but I don't think it works for what I want it for.
What do you hope to use it to make? Maybe we can help?
Ty...
I need for make puzzles
You are welcome!
@@damarisgonzalez6645 Hmmm…we replied, but I do not see it now. What kind of puzzles do you want to make? Sublimation puzzles? Jigsaw puzzles? Name puzzles? You should be able to make puzzles, but you may need to be creative with the materials. For instance, if you want to make name puzzles, you won’t be able to cut clear acrylic, but you can paint wood or do some acrylic colors. The other issue is that it is slow, so you will have to consider that. However, it would be doable if you like the compatible material choices and can work around the speed. Feel free to give us more details, and we are happy to brainstorm with you! 😃
So I can use any piece of glass ? A glass from a frame?
Yes, we used glass from a document frame from the Dollar Tree, and it worked just fine.
Buenas noche yo tengo una y no epodido cortar muchos acrylico por lo que veo tienen que ser de la marcarca y son demasiado caros me podrán ayuda
Hello, thankfully you do not have to use the Glowforge brand acrylic, but it cannot cut blue, white, clear, translucent or mirror acrylic. It can cut and engrave black, red, teal, green… What types of acrylic have you tried? We would love to help. Thank you for your question. We look forward to hearing from you.
@@Flemingoriginals007 como ago para cortar acrylico espejo me podrá mandar las intruciones por favor medida y como lo pongo gracia por contestame
@@mariarivas286The Glowforge Aura cannot cut mirror acrylic. We were able to get it to cut green acrylic, but the edges were melted…it was not good at all. I am sorry. We did cut the gold mirror acrylic with the Thunder Bolt laser.

We hope you find ways to use it that bring you joy. Thank you for commenting.
Yes it finally got better. I have it in the living room. I use a fan if needed.
That is terrific! Thank you for letting us know!🎉🎉🎉🎉
I have purchased the Spark without any regrets. I appreciate the review and new to using a laser. The affordability and the fact I create small projects and being able to transport this machine as mostly engraving projects not actual cutting. There will be times I would cut something but that is not my top priority.
That is fantastic! We are so happy for you!
Hi, what is the white pen you used to fill in the engraving?
We used a Marvy DecoColor Paint Pen. We also use Posca Paint Pens. Thank you for your question!
I have to say as someone who has cut a lot of felt flowers with a cricut the Aura at about 7 minutes is quite a bit faster
Yes, we were impressed, and no felt on the mat. Janet would put transfer tape down to protect the mat, so this is much easier too!
what if the lazer beam is red what does that mean
What kind of laser do you have?
I just got an Aura…. My first laser cutter. Well it’s on its way. Anyways I’m doing this (but Im not making mine and bought a window unit off Amazon. Anyways someone told me I still need to add a reverse fan. Your thoughts?
Congratulations on your soon-to-be first laser cutter! What do you plan to do with it? If you are cutting acrylic, we highly recommend an inline fan. Let us know how it goes!
Thanks!! Cool. I don’t really know what yet. I’m an avid cricut user but just for my own fun use, to make personal gifts etc so same with this. I’m not running a shop or anything.
@jacobferchaud8295 We think you are going to absolutely love it! We can’t wait to hear! We plan to go live tomorrow around 5 pm EST to share some more tips. Keep us posted!
Look forward to watching all of your videos. I enjoy learning something new and informative in each of your videos!
We are glad you are enjoying the videos. We truly appreciate the encouragement! Thank you!
Watching the replay! I personally love the name…I would love one. However, with the limitations I still feel like it’s expensive. I’ll keep dreaming of one day getting one, but a slower, smaller laser isn’t going to get me to spend my money. I would love one for educational purposes!
Thank you for watching! Those are excellent points and concerns! Yes, I hope Glowforge sends you one to test and create content! The SparkofSam should have one. We hope they will take our advice and create upgrade parts for the Aura. Thank you for taking the time to comment!💕
The live was fun I enjoyed chatting with the both of you
Thank you! We enjoyed chatting with you too! We would love to see your projects! Keep us posted!
@@Flemingoriginals007 I would love to show what I’ve made so far I would post here but you tube won’t let me post photos Also thank you for staying positive about the aura as there is a lot of negativity around it right now ( especially on FB )
@melaniejimmy Our pleasure! Life is too short for negativity. If you have Instagram, feel free to tag us or message us @fleming_originals 😃 We are excited to see your projects!
@@Flemingoriginals007 yes I have instagram and have added you guys and have tagged you in a couple of things
I appreciate your videos and honest opinions. I did order the Spark, and I don't have any remorse yet, lol. This was clearly not designed for crafters and makers who are already into lasers (as you said, why would you want to go with a slower, less capable machine?). I am a Cricut crafter and want to dip my toes into this, and any ability to cut these thicker materials is a step up from where I am. I do think the price point is attractive, for me there is a huge difference between $600 (with the pre-order) and $1200 for the Aura. I understand the limits (with materials, size, and speed) and I'm ok with that. If I find I really do enjoy this and do want to expand, then I'll start saving for an upgrade - though I would probably skip the Aura and go with a more powerful diode from another company - unless Glowforge does release a more powerful, larger diode laser in the future. That said, I hope people do their research before buying (at $600 I'm not buying anything blindly!) to avoid disappointment due to unrealistic expectations of what the Spark is capable of.
Yes, you are the perfect Spark owner! We think you will love it! We also think you will be surprised at how well it works with paper and cardstock! Not having to peel it from a sticky mat is so freeing! We think you will love using all of the Spark materials leather, wood, acrylic (albeit smelly), metal…! Enjoy your journey! Please keep us posted!
Thank you! I'm excited to hear that about paper and cardstock. I'm a scrapbooker, so I'm excited to play and see how I can incorporate the laser with some of my projects!@@Flemingoriginals007
@@meganmccormack3314 Oh my goodness! You are going to have so much fun! You will be able to do so much in your scrapbooks with paper, thin wood, acrylic, and so much more! You can even engrave some of you photos of you want! 🎉🎉🎉
Too slow for me. I am disappointed for Aura. 😅
We understand that. 😃 Have you received the automatic speed upgrade yet? The engraving should be 3 times faster. What do you plan to do? Have a terrific day!
@@Flemingoriginals007 I hoped that cutting would be 4 times faster. Havent tested yet. I was planning to do mirror acrylic cake toppers with aura, but cant do them at all. I have think what else I could do.
Yes, 4 times faster would be nice. 😃 That is so disappointing that you cannot do what you were planning. Hopefully you can find some fun acrylic for unique cake toppers! 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼
@@Flemingoriginals007 Yes can use some boring colors :)
@@decopaja 😆🥺😢 Hopefully there will be an exciting one. 🤞🏼
Probably going to purchase the Aura this summer. I am just a casual hobbyist and that will do most of what I would want to do. Am very hesitant though because I will not be paying a monthly fee just to use it.(already do with the Cricut) Hope they give it a few more included options on the free software. If they do, I will purchase. REALLY look forward to your informative videos. Please be well and keep on posting your great content on the Glowforge products.
That sounds like a great plan! Do you use a design program? You can import your own SVG designs into the free software for the Aura without Premium. If it is true that you can now download SVGs from Design Space, you will be ready to go! 🎉🎉Thank you for the encouragement! We appreciate it. We look forward to making more GF videos. Have a fantastic weekend!
Hey Steve and Janet, your reasoning seems very sound. Why go down when they could have gone up to a slightly bigger Glowforge with a lesser wattage CO2 laser and more capability…a step between Aura and the much more expensive next model? The Aura seems to fill the target market as is….
Yes! Exactly. I hope they do that!!
I will try the garage
The personal filter helped so much especially after we learned about the manual override, so it can do longer. I think an in-line fan would help too. We thought about the garage, but we were concerned about the winter months. We hope it works perfectly for you!
I feel like with better competition of diode lasers out there, they should have made improvements to the aura and offer a higher cutting speed and added air assist. I can’t see many will go for the spark with its smaller cutting area over the aura, still seems disappointing.
Yes, that is an amazing assessment of the situation!
We plan to go live tomorrow to talk about it. We hope you can join and add your thoughts! 😃
Finally catching this! I love you guys this is GREAT!!!
Awww, thank you so much! We’ve learned so much from you!!!
Beautiful!
Thank you!
The earring paper backing looks beautiful! Great job Fleming Originals with your first Live!🎉

Class action law suit coming.
I love all of your videos they’re so informative. Could you tell me what settings you use for the slate coaster on the Aura? I’ve been trying to figure it out but haven’t had any luck yet. Thanks. 😊
Hello, Thank you for you kind words. We truly appreciate them! As far as the Aura setting for slate, we used: Speed: 100 Power: 5.5 Passes 1 LPI: 270 We didn't test a lot of settings, so we don't think these are the best settings, but they did work, and for the simple art and text we were engraving, they looked pretty good. Have a great week! ~Steve & Janet
so they're selling mdf panels that are going to break the machine? or you can use mdf as long as its 1/4
The Glowforge CO2 lasers can use the MDF because they burn off the dust that the Aura cannot. They have now removed the medium plywood and draft board from their approved lists. Although the Aura is capable of cutting MDF, it will harm the optics. They still sell it, but it isn't approved for the Aura. Does that make sense?
Can you engrave stainless steel?
We would love to test that! Diodes can lightly engrave (lightly etch), but the Aura only has 6 watts of power. If it can make a mark, it isn't going to give a stunning etch like a fiber laser would though.
You didn’t add a fan? I keep hearing I would need to attach a fan.
The smell was so bad with cutting acrylic that we bought the personal filter. Now we put the filter in manual mode to get the smell out. However, is we had kept using the window vent, we would have absolutely purchased an in-line fan.
I tried the buttons like you showed but I still can’t get it to sync again. The light blue button just keeps blinking. Any suggestion? Thank you!!
Just one… unplug it, count to 10, then plug it back in. When we were testing manual mode, once or twice it would not pair with the Aura, but in that case unplugging it would resolve it.
Thanks Steve. I am new to Aura (and lasers) so these videos are very helpful.
That is great to hear! We are working on more Aura videos right now. Have a terrific day!
I find your videos on the Aura very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you so much!
I’ve only had my aura for 1 1/2 months. It’s starting to smoke. Is there a way to clean filter cartridge instead of buying new one?
First, with it being that new, I would contact Glowforge right away to ensure you do not invalidate any warranty you have left. Secondly, is the machine smoking or is it coming from materials? Let us know and we will send mor info. The filter is disposable, so it is not washable. Thank you for your question.
Thank you I had mine for about 2 months now unopened..I feel like I should of researched more 😢
Let us know if we can help. What do you hope to do with it?
@@Flemingoriginals007 I wanted to start with maybe earrings out of wood ..but I saw your video about certain woods don’t work , so I’ll have to research a little more
@nbennett7006 Good news! You can definitely do earrings. When the Aura first came out the settings for the Proofgrade materials were not programmed, but they are now. You can use thick or thin (you won’t want to use medium proofgrade wood because it has mdf in the middle, which destroys the optics over time). We think the thin makes the best earrings. When you use non-proofgrade wood, make sure to do a materials test (we have a couple of videos for that). Also, use wood that is laser compatible. Check out the video “Glowforge Aura Part 6: The Frustrating Reality”. We show earrings and show how long it takes. We hope you make some earrings soon! Have a great day!
@@Flemingoriginals007 ok thank you so much ..I will watch the video
@nbennett7006 We think you will have fun with your Aura. 😃
Are you able to import a file to silhouette to change it to an SVG?
Yes, you can.
Yes, you can, BUT you need business level to export to SVG.
@kathypariso6102 Yes, that is correct. The the need for Silhouette Studio Business Edition for SVGs is the subject of the video. Thank you for commenting. 😃
I think I may have misunderstood your question. Yes, you can import other file types (whatever Silhouette will open) but in some cases you may need to do a trace of the image. I have found that certain embroidery files with single stitching (no fills) can be imported and exported out to SVG with no added work needed. Sketch style files work great for this.
2mm or less acyrlic no clear
Thank you for your comment. We have found it can cut 3mm. It cannot cut clear, white, blue, translucent, or mirrored acrylic. It shouldn’t cut MDF/Draftboard…
THANK YOU!!!!!
You are welcome! 😃
Is this software similar to the Cricut Design Space?
Silhouette is a stand alone designing tool that works directly with Silhouette machines, but Cricut design software is only used with Cricut machines. You cannot export designs from Cricut. We have Cricut machines, but design many things in Silhouette Studio. We do not have Silhouette machines. Does that make sense?
However, if you are used to Cricut Design Space, it will help reduce the learning curve.
@@Flemingoriginals007 makes total sense
Thank you. 😃
Hello! Can it cut pastel acrylics? Not wanting to spent 5k on the other machine.
We will get some and try it asap! Thank you for the question!
@@Flemingoriginals007 thank you so much! I look forward to it 😌
We are trying to find nontransparent pastel acrylic. Craft Closet has a link to materials that diode lasers can cut. It looks like it can cut a few colors of pastel. Here is their link: craftcloset.com/collections/diode-acrylic This is not an affiliate link.
Wait so they here selling MDF as wood???
Well, it is in the fine print. 🥺 We were surprised too.
How? 😂
So you need a glowforge premium account to do this?
No, you can make your own in a program that allows you to create SVGs, such as Illustrator, Inkscape, or Silhouette Studio. That information is at the 2:08 mark. Let me know if that helps or if you would be interested in a more detailed video on how to create one in another program. Thank you for your comment.
@@Flemingoriginals007 Sorry I'm just confused on why you couldn't just do this in the glowforge software? What makes it so you have to use glowforge premium? I do have Silhouette Studio, but wouldn't know the first thing about how to make an svg file with it. Love your videos by the way. Just new to this. I bought my sister the glowforge aura, and I got myself an M1. So this is all very new.
That makes sense! Sadly, without Glowforge Premium, you don’t have access to adding text or adding shapes. That is why you would need to create them and import them from another program. What version of Silhouette Studio do you have? Thank you for your encouragement and great questions! PS You are an amazing sister!!!🎉 That is a fantastic gift!
@@Flemingoriginals007 I actually have silhouette business. I use it between the cricut and cricut design space. It would definitely help very much if you had a video on how to do something like that on silhouette software for people who can't or won't pay the $50 a month for glowforge premium, that's a little outrageous.
@@Flemingoriginals007 How odd. I replied yesterday but it didn't post. I have Silhouette Business. I used it along with my Cricut. So I'm not unfamiliar with it, but it's definitely been awhile. And I genuinely don't remember how to use it. It would be nice to have another tutorial to explain how to do that in Silhouette though for people who don't have glowforge premium. That price blows my mind. That's outrageous. Thank you for your time. I appreciate it.
