Amtrak's 2035 Plan for the Central Corridors: What may be coming soon!
Amtrak has ambitious plans for the Central Corridors. Launched in 2021 as part of the Amtrak Connect Us initiative, these plans aim to transform passenger rail service from the Colorado Front Range to the Texas Triangle and beyond. These corridors aim to connect major metropolitan areas, enhance mobility, and integrate seamlessly with Amtrak’s national network. Today, we take a closer look at Amtrak’s vision for 2035 for this region, exploring the progress made on each route, their current status, and the latest funding developments three years after the plan's introduction.

Amtrak's 2035 Plan for the Central Corridors: What may be coming soon!
Central Corridors: Front Range
Route: Pueblo - Colorado Springs - Denver - Fort Collins - Cheyenne
Amtrak's proposed Front Range corridor addresses the growing transportation demands of this rapidly developing region, aiming to connect key urban centers and support economic growth along Colorado’s Front Range. The initial plan includes three daily round trips between Pueblo and Fort Collins, with one of these trips extending to Cheyenne. This schedule highlights Amtrak’s commitment to providing reliable and flexible travel options for residents and visitors alike.
Denver serves as the corridor’s central anchor, strategically positioned to link the surrounding cities. By offering a modern rail alternative, the corridor reduces dependency on personal vehicles, alleviates traffic congestion, and promotes environmentally sustainable travel. In 2021, Colorado lawmakers created the Front Range Passenger Rail District and allocated $1.5 million for site development along the proposed rail routes. This funding aims to establish passenger train service along the 160-mile I-25 corridor from Fort Collins to Pueblo. Besides its 2035 plan, currently, Amtrak also aims to enhance the Dallas-Fort Worth to Houston corridor by making Sunset Limited a daily service, as opposed to its current three-times-a-week schedule.
Amtrak's 2035 Plan for the Central Corridors: What may be coming soon!
Central Corridors: Heartland Flyer
Route: Dallas/Fort Worth - Oklahoma City - Newton
Amtrak’s plans for the Heartland Flyer corridor aim to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen links to its national network. By extending the existing Heartland Flyer, the proposal envisions a significant expansion of services.
This includes increasing the number of daily round trips between Oklahoma City and Fort Worth from one to three, allowing seamless connections to the Texas Triangle services that link Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio.
Additionally, one of these round trips will be extended to Newton, Kansas, enabling passengers to connect with Amtrak’s Southwest Chief, a key transcontinental route.

I think the Norfolk/Newport News area might get oversaturated. Overall, I like the plan
AI narration is awful.
As someone who lives in San Diego, I found this quite an informative video! I look forward to seeing these projects completed. Thanks for the video!
Thanks :). Cheers :). Happy new year!
@@GREATTRAINSPEED, Happy New Year to you too!
It is a blessing that Kansas is considering an investment in rail service into Newton from Oklahoma City. However, expansion at that level will not serve many riders and not serve many new riders. Kansas should consider investment that will support a train service from Oklahoma City through Wichita into Kansas City MO. That approach will be more expensive but yield a great deal more ridership per dollar of investment. --- Only extending the train to Newton to replace the connector bus, does that justify hundreds of millions of dollars investment? Thanks for the video.
Write to people in charge of it and local leaders and maybe just maybe it can change. Public transit didn’t happen this no good if it doesn’t take you where you need to go or is easy to get to.
While Texas demands a daily service for the Sunset Limited, we also want to see the return of the former Burlington Texas Zephyr, running from Denver to Houston thru Colorado Springs, Amarillo, and Dallas-Fort Worth...Just this one long distance train will solve the lack of a daily Amtrak train from Houston to Dallas, but Pueblo and Colorado Springs to Denver... This one long distance train will provide the entire south with a more direct route to the Rockies Denver and Salt Lake City without having to divert to Washington DC or Chicago... The Texas Zephyr is a no brainer... Amtrak pull your head out of your ass...
First day of winter is here, and a Siemens Charger froze up in the snow again. Well, that fix didn't work, back to the drawing board!
I can’t believe they brag about spending a few billion dollars on rail they need to spend billions and billions and trillions of dollars
I like the expansion plan explanation! Great job and great work! But don’t forget the FRA has other plans too!
Thanks! We hope to see you around here often :). Cheers!
With the new administration taking over more than half of these don't happen!
The new services that would be state or regional services stand a better chance of starting.
The last administration bought 75 Charger locomotives and all of the new single deck passenger cars. Get your facts straight!
That's Wilmington, NORTH CAROLINA, to Raleigh - not Wilmington, DELAWARE.
The Carolinian goes through Raleigh, not Lynchburg.
Winston Salem-Greensboro
what ever they put out is BS. We need Boring frontfaceing Commuters.. Not long distance Train nerd ferries
Here in Colorado our light rail throughout the Front Range is primary used for homeless sleeping quarters. Our ski train programs keep getting canceled due to lack of usage, and like California's massive rail projects all end in massive overspending never ending projects. I grew up around the Grand County portal of Moffat, and freight pays it's way, passengers in Colorado do not. In fact RTD just approved a $1.2 BILLION budget for 2025, while ridership is even further down from previous years. All on the backs of the few taxpayers left.
A 'Pocket Track'... I know you are an AI generated speech from a script... but in your script, when a real Train Spotter = you would KNOW the spur off the main railway through tracks is called a "SIDING". IF/When the SIDING reconnects to the mainline, the Siding is called a "PASSING LOOP". A Railway Station has a Passing Loop to remove the stopping service from the mainline. A Railway TERMINUS has a Siding. A train that enters a siding only exits in the direction from which it came. In NYC, Grand Central Terminus platforms are all on Sidings... it lacks the through tracks... but the platforms are still on Sidings. Penn Station is a combination of Sidings and Passing Loops. The Sidings have trains that enter, stop disembark/embark, return the way it came. The Passing Loop platforms have trains leave the mainline, stop at platforms, disembark/embark, and carry onwards in the same direction of travel. A Passing Loop can be anywhere on a railway. It is where the SLOWER trains move off the main rails UP or DOWN lines so the Faster DMUs and EMUs can zip past.
The Gulf coast line needs to get to Orlando if it's to bring in more riders. This Mobile proposal is a waste of money, just restore the entire route. No longer will people need to go roundabout to get to the south. It would increase more people on the Silver route and the Floridian. CSX got federal money after the hurricane years ago to restore service so let Amtrak back on it.
They need to make a direct Amtrak service from Charlotte to Wilmington that connects west to east and not have to go up to Raleigh. There’s already a train line we’d just need to work with CSX
I think the Salisbury to Asheville line will be postponed due to the damages from Helene on the rail lines.
looked like it, but officials seemed to be positive. There's a post (archived) talked about that: archive.is/WMkao
Is this Atlanta to Nashville Lane on their own line, or are they gonna be running on freight lines?
sadly the freight lines owned by CSX Transportation
If I remember looking an article talking about passenger train service in the South Bay, the Capitol Corridor is also planning to run 2 round trips a day to and from Salinas. Caltrain also plans to run some trains that way as part of the proposal for restoring other passenger rail service in Monterey County.
We no longer have a Amtrak friendly Gov't in power so it's likely much of these plans will be scrapped or significantly cutback!!
the new FRA guy appointed by Donald Trump is somewhat a rail guy, but his past work may speak different
Anyone else notice the visual while talking about Wilmington, NC had a Septa train for it? .... Wrong Wilmington lol septa is DE
Noted! Thanks for the clarification :)
Thank you for bringing more attention to passenger rail in the Southeast. Eighteen (18) states participate in the Amtrak/State Partnership program. It means that 18 states help to fund passenger rail. Virginia and North Carolina are included. That is why you will see the realization of projects in Virginia and North Carolina. Atlanta should be a great passenger railway hub, but the state of Georgia will not spend a dime, and you won't see anything happen there. North Carolina built the North Carolina Railroad (NCRR) in the 1850s. The state still owns it. NCRR runs from Charlotte to Morehead City. Construction of the S line has started between Raleigh and Wake Forest. The S line will run at 110 mph (max) between Raleigh and Petersburg. The Raleigh to Wilmington NC route does not have any major roadblocks. The fabulous Raleigh Union Station has already seen multiple increases in service. The Commonwealth of Virginia got smart. Highway widening has limits and they have been hit. Thanks.
Only thing I wonder is what Raleigh will do with Union Station to accommodate the S-Line trains, whether they'll build a new platform on another part of the wye or if the trains will have to clear the wye then reverse onto the existing platform tracks. Richmond Main Street Station is simpler project which just includes reactivating a platform on the opposite end of the existing active platform. I hope Virginia will take advantage of the S-Line project to also support added capacity projects and bring long distance trains to Main Street station, bringing more passengers closer to Downtown Richmond on a single train.
There's something special about rail... i'm not referring to city public transit. It's something special would be nice to have a nationwide system to compete with air.
The passenger preference legislation is NOT enforced. Amtrak has the exact same problems as Vi.
Where are they going to get the equipment? It took them over a decade to get a 100 viewliners. And since Katrina, we still don’t have service resumed along the gulf coast. The freight partners don’t want additional passenger trains. The national long distance network is in shambles. No capacity due to lack of equipment and continuous locomotive failures. Horrible on time performance. I’m all for a successful Amtrak, but these “corridor” concepts will happen at the detriment of the long distance trains.
the Gulf Coast is already on track this year!
Amtrak has 83 "Airo" sets on order with options for more so the equipment is available if there is money. As for the long-distance trains Amtrak is playing the long game: benign neglect until the last of those who remember what a long-distance train is passes away and the LD trains with them. They've been playing this hand for over a half-century.
Dear god please buy the right of way for Capitol Corridor. Trains get screwed so much because of guy it’d be nice to increase some of the segments in the valley up to 90 mph
Bring Sunset Limited to Florida!!!!!!
I live close to Tampa, and we desperately need more frequent train service. In fact, it would be wonderful if Amtrak could be extended further west to St Petersburg.
Down to Sarasota would be nice too.
If you've ever wondered if there is a big difference between North and South Carolina, just think of how much rail news you heard about one in just this video compared to how much you never, ever hear about the other one. Sometimes I think they only have half a name in common.
The additional trains could be great were the average speed to increase atleast 50% from 50 mph to 75 mph so that they are close to or exceed travel times for cars.
Ironically, the Trump administration did approve $650M for Caltrain’s electrification project
and they almost jeopardized the project when they found out Caltrain was working with CAHSR
I'm looking forward to the expansions in Virginia. Main Street Station has so much potential and will act almost as a "crossroads" between northeastern and southeastern locations. I hope that the long-distance trains will eventually be rerouted to Main Street so that passengers can disembark closer to Downtown Richmond. The S-Line project may make that possible since the station will likely see capacity enhancements from the project. It would also be nice if a frequent shuttle train (something like the Valley Flyer) could be established between Richmond - Newport News and Richmond - Norfolk. This way, more frequent service can be offered to Hampton Roads locations without necessarily extending a full train to the stations, and the shuttle can connect riders with more frequent service passing through Richmond.
Amtrak should connect Phoenix to LA via Palm Springs via Hiway 10 straight to Phoenix not down through Yuma
👍👍
America is back! From Salinas here. I also heard that there are big plans for the Coast Starlight between San Luis Obispo and San Jose to add some routes, including in King City, and increase frequency. Currently there are only two daily trains from Salinas. One goes south to Los Angeles(330 miles/531 kilometers) and one goes north to San Jose/Oakland/Sacramento/Portland/Seattle. A crying shame, but there is hope. 😪🚝🙏
Yes! We did cover that on our channel: ua-cam.com/video/sK7WtgrvC9w/v-deo.html.
Is there a RAILROAD 🛤️ RENAISSANCE occurring in the *United States 🇺🇸?*
It will probably die down for a while but it's well so far. New train sets soon, a new route in the Spring, and more.
GOP is now in complete control of all 3 Branches, watch all these plans come to a screeching halt!!
I found this quite an informative video! I look forward to seeing what new passenger trains will operate into the Moffat Tunnel in the next few years. Thanks for making this! I'll subscribe!
Thanks! Cheers :)
Before covid one living in Central Ca I had the choice of leaving Hanfordzat 5:30 in the am getting off in Stockton and boarding a bus to San Jose. The other choice wich I called the scenic route traveled to Oakland. I got off in Emeryville and waited for the train that would stop at Santa Clara or end of trail at San Jose. The ride back to Hanford was the same in reverse. I could choose to leave at 9:30in the am. And arrive in the afternoon. I have ridden your new train. It's nie but it has no cafe. If this train should begin running north on the 711 train route I would definitely buy my breakfast at McDonald's. As I do this now as the cafe service is non existent due to breakdowns in that car. As for those of who may be physically affected entering and exiting the train , the steps are to getting on or off, the built in drop steps are still to high to manage I was helped on board with the use of a hand cranked platform. Upon arriving in Hanford the platform wasn't in place so it took two conductors and a third person to help me get down. Foolish me. I assumed because they helped me ontatthey would help me get off the same way. I now know to remind them Im going to need help when I arrive in Hanford.
Brightline should just go ahead and pick its Amtrak name now so it can lock in something like “Atlantic Brightliner”
Electrification?
On certain routes. The new Airo trainset has a dual mode, hybrid setting.
Amtrak is not a business. It’s. A political bureaucracy.
There is a Northeast Corridor, but I don’t think there is such a thing as an Amtrak “Western Corridor”. At least not any time soon.
Surfliner is the second highest ridership Amtrak corridor but you’re right there’s a big gap between the Surfliner corridor and the Cascades corridor
Sacramento has the 7th busiest train station in the country.
@@Dweller415 : It’s a nice medium-sized station, though I’d love to see the nearby development efforts move forward a little faster. I hear an MLS team was considering building a stadium?
It is shame Los Angeles and San Diego is not connected by railroad! You cannot ride from North to South California non stop and government still doesn't rush tk fix this problem! Yes! You can ride from Los Angeles to San Diego but it is a turtle ride and then you have to use thr bus to ride to San Bernardino to get to rail station in North California direction! How come we live in always praised the best state but it is like living in middle ages
What do you mean? The Pacific Surfliner connects LA and San Diego; LA and Bakersfield are the cities not connected by rail, meaning you have to take a bus to Bakersfield if you want to take a train from Bakersfield to the rest of Central California
I'm confused by this. San Diego and LA are connected. But maybe I'm reading it wrong and you mean they aren't connected to other corridors in a better way?
This is ai slop people!
Maybe we are finally getting somewhere on the Winter Park Express. As the video mentions, previously prices were as high as $139 RT. Thats just insane, and of course no one (or not many people used it). The proposed prices of $19-$39 each way so ($40-$80 RT) make more sense, but it's still a hard sell competing with cars, especially when people carpool.
AI slop script. Yawnnn
We need the federal government, working with the states, to finance the purchase and electrification of the actual rails and lease trackage rights to freight operators and passenger operators similar to Italy. We also need to build actual capacity to directly build and maintain the rails and systems like is done in Spain instead of everything being a one off private contract. Then higher speeds can be increased by straightening routes, grade separation, and adding bypasses. The problem is that to get 63 billion for rail the infrastructure law also included 630 billion for highways, and most of the 63 billion is going to replacing Amtrak rolling stock plus the NEC. Twenty billion of the 63 goes to replace one existing tunnel to NYC. This was basically just enough to keep rail on life support. Imagine a world where rail got 630 billion and highways got 63 instead.
It will require tens of billions of dollars to do these so-called fantasy plans. Show me the money.
