THE CLUTCH DRILL - Moto Track Stand #balance
This is one of my new favorite drills. When I 1st tried to do this it was out of my scope of abilities. If this is too hard for you try letting out some air from your tires. Also, use a hillside that is less steep.

This was part of the splatters class at trials training center taught by Josh Roper. Then Seth Vorseth and I worked on ride up technique using throttle only rather than clutch work. Mika Lonsdale helped me with Static Zaps. Getting over that big log in the playground was a goal of mine. Then the top riders tried a new game of Trials Soccer and thankfully no one got hurt. Sam Fastle won the whee...

3 different sections here that I got to practice with trials coach Ray Peters and a group of other riders when we were out at the trials training center just before trials training days 2024. wish I had footage of myself on that step down bc it was a real mind job. so much of me wanted to just abort bc it felt like we were going to go over the bars. 😳

I really want to see what you can do with the light bee surron!
Great content. I'd certainly be interested in hearing more from Chris. Get him set up with some better audio equipment for the next one.
Good point
Killer
Thank you
This is a great drill on a motorcycle and is well demonstrated. However on a bicycle ideally you remain seated without moving the wheels back n forth. (you balance by turning the bars back n forth a bit with the brake engaged.) This technique saves you from looking like, 'that guy' at the traffic light.
First off I’d like to say great job on the channel. I have watched quite a few of your videos in the past year after picking up a trials bike and have had a recent discovery in static balance that I thought you might want to pass along. I have always been focusing on adding peg pressure to stay in balance and have recently discovered focusing on how to unweight the peg. I.e. if the bike is falling to the right. Instead of applying more pressure to the left peg I unweight the right peg, thereby increasing peg pressure on the left. It is a long story how I came about this discovery and apologize if you have talked about this in your videos already but thought I’d pass along to help those just learning how to static balance.
Great point. I will definitely pass it on. 👍 Thank you. I had another breakthrough of my own I'll share along with this point. Thanks
nice one - thanks! - keep it up - cheers!
Thank you
Nice Video!! I am going to find an area to practice this.
Thank you
Thanks for talking about the details Tom. So often we hear about the concept but are left to “figure out” the details on our own.
You're welcome. This one's tricky 😉
Did you switch to Vertigo?😅
Yep 😉
Good video! I shall try that the next time I am out with the bike. Vertigo looks a nice one! 👍Hope you are enjoying the new machine!
Thanks and I am
What? a Vertigo? Tell us what's up! :)
Well I can't speak for Tom, but I can say after owning mine since 2020, and now my wife having one as well.... they are great bikes. Maybe not for everybody, and learning to transition from troubleshooting a carb to EFI is a bit different. My R2 has been pretty great. I couldn't imagine going back to a carb again. Though all the brands of bikes are currently amazing, I have really come to love what Vertigo has to offer.
I've always wanted one. Test rode a couple at TTC and really liked how smooth they were. Found a good deal on a 2022 nitro 250. It's extremely friendly and I'm really happy with it.
Great drill thanks for the content! Congrats on the Vertigo too. Does this drill work with the same effect on the EM? I'm contemplating an EM for the future.
What happened to the TRS, Tom?

I checked at this event but started watching you after. Wish I could have met you!
Yes, that would have been fun. 👍
Finally! Someone making videos for people who want to try something new. Its sometimes way too overwhelming trying to learn from a pro. You do an excellent job of showing what time and motivation can do to build skills. Thank you
Thank you. Lots more on the website as well. 👍 www.trialsprogression.com
Follow lot of your video for hard enduro training, but I'm thinking to buy a trial also.. do you have tried all this new stuff with an enduro bike for curiosty? How is to switch from one to another ?
I used to ride a KTM 200. Sold it after falling in love with trials. It transfers over very well, but I don't have any videos demonstrating that.... Yet. 🤷♂️ Maybe next year I'll get a big bike again.
Hard work pays off
Do you find that enabling TKO helps with engine inertia? So there is a continuous slight pull for getting over logs vs no tko, cutting throttle completely and getting stuck? Thanks
I do. So long as you keep the clutch out (engaged) that does help some. However, it's not nearly as strong as the inertia on a gas bike.
More, more, more! Brilliant stuff. I’ve been trying to get a structured approach to my riding for a while now (all my riding buddies just practice sections). This video really helped me to see why I’m struggling with some techniques and why stuff I thought I knew doesn’t always work.
Awesome great to hear. Have you seen the video with Chris Buzzelli? It also talks about structuring practice sessions.
I've got a Rad sticker on my fork guards :)
That's awesome 😎
Great video! Thanks Tom and Josh for your time!! I can personally attest to the quality of Ryan’s training as well.
Thank you
More! I stumbled across this video while in the first few days of what will be a multi-month recovery from an injury racing with my local flattrack club. I'd never really thought about the process of learning as it applies to our sports, but this approach makes so much sense....CLICK! This has caused me to really think about the value of breaking down the elements of riding into smaller pieces that can be more easily processed and shifted into the subconscious. Thanks for bringing this valuable perspective to a broader audience.
Sorry to hear about your injury man that stinks. Thanks for sharing and watching. I hope to have more in the works.
@@TrialsProgressionthanks. I’m still processing the experience and trying to turn it into something positive. This discussion with Chris will definitely help me achieve that. Also considering a trials bike as a training tool when I get back on two wheels. I’ve enjoyed watching your content and the methods you present.
Great videos. Thanks for your excellent work.
Thank you
How good are ye sir national uad or new to it🙏
Will ye ever ride in the famous ssdt,if ye did where do ye think ye would finish I the top 2⁸0 riders sir 🙏❤️🍀🇮🇪👌
Probably won't make it to that one.
Are yer still riding sir,🍀🙏
Great video trials is great for hard enduro!
For sure
jeeze thats impressive!
Thank you
Great content. I was the 137th viewer but only the 10th thumbs up. I suggest that you remind people to like and subscribe. This video deserves many more thumbs up.
Thanks and good point.
Good job guys
Thank you
Had one since ‘21. Got it because I’m in an urban environment. Lots of fun to ride around my local parks or mess around on when camping. Also started doing trials event and its been a perfect machine for my experience level. Very excited about the factor-e as its a big upgrade from the 21 with the addition of gears, increased range, upgraded shock and fully programmable.
It sounds awesome 😎
I think I am going to join your program in a bit. I have my first trials event this Sun just to get a feel for it! I still struggle a lot with static balance and rolling into a static balance. So look forward to your courses soon!
Awesome. If you haven't yet done your first trial I have a lengthy video on things to consider for that. Also static balance isn't nearly as important as being able to turn in an event. Keep working those figure 8s esp on hillsides. Email me if you have any questions
Loading the flywheel then clutch slipping, compress the suspension and pop that clutch in last ? Isit correct ?
Yes, pop "out" clutch at end. Sit down on top and slip clutch again as needed for traction. Hardest part is revving it up high enough. Rpm anxiety is real 😆
Need momentum before you hit it and enough power to finish and them things suck
Yes, I was just getting started on it. 10 min in and I tried to do a section I had previously done on the gas bike. 😆
I'm a street trials rider (bmx), youtube recommended this clip.. very interesting and applicable to my sport also! reminded me of the old "twist of the wrist" keith code book from my road racing days :) thanks!
Awesome. Thanks for watching
Fantastic video. AAA+++.
Thanks so much. Chris is great
this is excellent stuff, thankyou
Glad you enjoyed it 👌
I made it to the end as well, it flew by 😎
Great to hear 👊
Great video, it's like Keith Code approach for trials! Makes so much sense!👍
Awesome
Awesome video!
Thanks
This is an epic video. I love the concept of skiping splats and focusing on bricks, from which we can build later on. Also fear and stress being accepted and blocking the learning (not mentioning the danger of crash). Focus on what we are doing, and being repeatable. when we are aware what we do we can alter it vs doing movements in auto-mode. the video is soo full of great stuff... Thanks Tom :)
Thanks
Great Video Tom and Chris! More, more, more please!!! I think I got the most out the focusing on what your “feeling” while doing a technique. And I’m really glad you asked Chris for examples of inputs and outputs at the end. Was also happy to hear that guys learning later in life don’t necessarily need a 4lane highway, because at 1st that sounded a little overwhelming! 😅 keep up the good work!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback 😉
Great video on the learning process, what helps or doesn't and how to back a level to improve. A couple things I've thought about and this video reinforced is: 1) as I'm still new to this what I'm learning is perishable and 2) recording my practice is critical for me to see my mistakes (or even see me getting it right once in a while). Thanks guys!
Right on. So much good stuff there. You are making great progress 👍
Great video coming from one neuro-geek to another. As a beginner I have been blessed to be able to learn from both Chris & Abigail Buzzelli and Ray Peters. They have taught me to stay focused on the basics and not to look at that bright shiny object that everyone else is focused on. For me trials is not just about tricks, it's about consistency and repeatability. I have said it more than once on here, if that rock or log looks too big, it probably is.
I ran after the bright & shiny 😜. Now I'm back on the path to consistency of the basics thanks to conversations like the above. 👌
What an epic video, Iv loved all the videos you have put together. You are a pillar in the community! Keep at it brother
Thank you
So many words for "imagine what you want, do what you can, observe the differences, correct, repeat".
Great Summary
It’s more than imagining what is wanted and observing. There is discussion on appropriately breaking down techniques into their sub components, establishing the markers for success, learning to recognize decay, managing the variables that contribute to cognitive bottlenecks, etc.
Awesome!
Those are my boys, from upstate NY!! ☘️☘️☘️🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Loved riding with those NY guys 😀
Awesome riding. Thanks for posting.😎👍🏁🇺🇸
Thank you
You guys make it look so easy 😐
